The Kirchberg (Kierchbierg) district is a vast plateau in the northeast of Luxembourg City. It is one of the 24 districts of the Luxembourg capital.
The Kirchberg district is adjacent to Weimerskirch, Neudorf/Weimershof and Clausen.
Overview of the Kirchberg district
Split in two by Avenue John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Kirchberg is Luxembourg City' s modern financial district. It is characterized by its contemporary architecture and prestigious infrastructure.
It is home to European institutions, numerous banks and international companies.
But beyond its image as a business district, Kirchberg is also a mixed residential, cultural and leisure district. Kirchberg also offers residential and commercial areas, as well as Luxembourg elementary school and international schools.
You'll also find cultural venues such as the Philharmonie and the Musée d'Art Moderne or Mudam.
Accessibility is enhanced by the tramway and major roads.
Nevertheless, the district offers many advantages thanks to its ongoing development, with new projects aimed at balancing professional and residential life. But its atmosphere can seem colder and more functional outside business hours.
The history of the Kirchberg district
An agricultural area until the middle of the 20th century, the Kirchberg district is now a very dynamic area, thanks to its strong economic activity. It is one of the major districts of Luxembourg's capital.
The Kirchberg plateau was transformed by thearrival of European institutions in the 1950s and 1960s. Its fields and farmland disappeared, to be replaced by tall buildings. In the 1980s, the district experienced its full development with the growth of financial activities in Luxembourg.
In recent years, the Fonds Kirchberg has been helping to rebalance the district with the construction of numerous residential buildings.

European Union and business in Luxembourg
With a business atmosphere during the day, the northern and southern parts of Avenue Kennedy are dedicated to European institutions and business.
Tall, modern buildings, a veritable architectural showcase , line the Avenue John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Coming from the center of Luxembourg, this is where you'll find the Towers of Europe and the European institutions. Luxembourg is a founding member of Europe and plays an active role in its institutions:
- Council of the European Union or Council of Ministers: usually based in Brussels, but the April, June and October sessions are held in Luxembourg.
- Court of Justice of the European Union: Luxembourg has been the judicial capital of Europe since 1952.
- European Court of Auditors
- European Investment Bank and European Investment Fund
- Secretariat General of the European Parliament
- Eurostat and Publications Office (Jean Monnet building)
Further along Avenue Kennedy, towards Rond Point Serra, you'll find major banks and financial companies, auditing and law firms... so many prestigious names in the Luxembourg economy. and other international companies. Kirchberg would be the equivalent on its own scale of the City of London.
Lovers of architecture will be delighted by the facades of the richly varied institutional buildings: Deutsche Bank, KPMG, Court of Justice, EIB, etc.
Kirchberg, a cultural district in Luxembourg
Philharmonic and orchestra
The magnificent Philharmonie building or Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte concert hall, designed by the famous architect Christian de Portzamparc, creator of numerous buildings in Europe and beyond, is also a sight to behold. Guided toursallow you to admire the rows of columns, the different concert halls and even walk backstage and on stage in the Grand Auditorium. A great experience for the whole family.
The Philharmonie de Luxembourg has 3 halls to welcome music lovers and enthusiasts. The Grand Auditorium, with its extraordinary architecture and design, can accommodate 1,500 listeners. The Salle de Musique de Chambre seats 300 for more intimate concerts. The 180-seat Espace Découverte is ideal for children's concerts and musical projects.
The acoustics of all the halls are incomparable. A concert in the Grand Auditorium with the Philharmonic Orchestra's choirs is an extraordinary experience.
But Avenue Kennedy is also home to many leisure and cultural activities.
Leisure and culture in the Kirchberg district
Next to the Philharmonie, the Mudam - Musée d'art moderne Grand Duc Jean, built against the former Luxembourg fortress , was designed byarchitect Ieoh Ming Pei (1917-2019) .
The Mudam presents the finest collections of contemporary art. The Musée de la Forteresse, together with the Musée Drai Eechelen and Fort Thungen, complete the cultural offering on this side of the avenue.
Opposite Avenue Kennedy, the LuxExpo exhibition center regularly hosts events. Take a stroll down its aisles to visit the famous Festival des Migrations or the European contemporary art fair Art3f.
The Kirchberg is also home to numerous works of art and sculpture: the birdcage by Luxembourg artist Su-Mei Tse, the monumental "Exchange" sculpture by American sculptor Richard Serra, Giovanni Teconi's "Big Walking Flower", and the "Lange Bänker", depicting an austere banker...
The LUGA 2025 exhibition brings a vast display of urban gardens to the neighborhood.
Kirchberg, a residential district in Luxembourg
In addition to the old Kirchberg district, which has retained its more "village" feel, the area is undergoing a major transformation and now offers a large number of residential homes.
The Avenue Adenauer and the surrounding area are the scene of major construction work to create a residential area that will restore balance to the district. Today, the Kirchberg is a truly mixed-use district with numerous amenities.
A number of major real estate projects are due to be built here in the next few years.
Amenities in the Kirchberg district
The Kirchberg hospital and the Clinique Bohler are major assets for the district. Located at the entrance to the district, near the Rond-Point Serra, just off the A1 freeway exit, they offer high-quality medical facilities.
Schools and childcare in Kirchberg
Residents of Luxembourg's Kirchberg district also benefit from the presence of several basic schools, a foyer scolaire and several crèches.
Kirchberg is also home to theEuropean School. The private school Sainte Sophie is also nearby in the Weimershof district . One of the campuses of the University of Luxembourg is also located in this area.
See the education/training section for more information on schools and school systems in Luxembourg.
Transport in Kirchberg
The Kirchberg district is particularly well served.
The Serra traffic circle at Kircherg is a major gateway to the city of Luxembourg, and a real mobility hub. Immediately connected to the A1 freeway towards Germany, the Limpertsberg district and Luxembourg city center can be reached via the Pont Rouge Grande-Duchesse Charlotte.
If desired, the Gernsbach P+R parking lot and the Findel airport car park can be used by cross-border commuters, who can leave their vehicles there and continue on their way with a gentler form of mobility. Several bus routes serve the city center via Avenue Adenauer. A Vél'Oh station and an MBox are also available for cyclists. There's also a pleasant cycle path linking the district to Senningerberg in Niederanven.
Connected to the funicular, the tramway serves the enclosed Pfaffenthal district below the Kirchberg. It then reaches the historic center of the Ville-Haute and the main railway station. The streetcar then continues to the southern districts of the Cloche d'Or, Luxembourg's new business center . In the other direction, the streetcar connects Kirchberg with the LuxExpo exhibition center andFindel international airport.
Shops in Kirchberg
To the north of Kirchberg, the Auchan shopping center offers a 12,500 m2 2-storey hypermarket with free 2-hour covered parking, a shopping mall with 50 stores and 19 restaurants. On the other side, the Infinity real estate project has created new retail space opposite the Philharmonie music hall.
Leisure activities in Kirchberg
In addition to the Mudam museum of modern art and the Philharmonie, Kirchberg is also known for its leisure facilities, including the large La Coque sports complex with its swimming pool and climbing wall, and the Kinepolis multiplex cinema.
A large green space behind the Hull allows you to enjoy the coolness in summer, with a restaurant open in good weather, "The Kiosk", known for its famous " Flammekuechen".
Every year, the LuxExpo exhibition center welcomes thousands of visitors to its various exhibitions and trade shows. It's also the starting and finishing point for the famous ING Night Marathon, Luxembourg's biggest sporting event.
Quality of life in Kirchberg
Separated from Luxembourg's historic center by the Grande Duchesse Charlotte or Pont Rouge bridge, the Kirchberg has many attractions. Nevertheless, we're looking forward to seeing more pedestrian spaces with a real sense of neighborhood life. Today, local services are mainly concentrated on Avenue JF Kennedy, to the detriment of more residential areas.
However, the intention is to rebalance the ratio between housing and offices, to give the area a little more humanity.
Over 25,000 people are expected to live in the area, compared with less than 5,700 in 2017. The working population is also set to increase significantly, as illustrated by the magnificent Arcelor Mittal headquarters currently under construction in the European Quarter. In 2020, 12,000 people were working in Kirchberg. This figure will rise to 40,000 by 2025, and over 66,000 by 2040.
Development of the Kirchberg district
A number of new districts are currently being developed in the Kirchberg area: Kiem district (820 homes), Réimerwee (480 homes), Grünwald, Kennedy Sud.
The Op der Schleed project to the north of Boulevard Adenauer should see the construction of almost 4,800 homes, for an additional population of over 10,000 within 30 years.
In addition, the Kirchberg fund, which manages the district, has commissioned an architectural firm to rethink the public spaces. The aim is to give a more human touch to this district, considered too cold and impersonal. Inhabitants of the Kiem district are calling for more meeting places to encourage exchanges in this new district.
Shops should be added to the first floors of buildings, and street furniture should be installed to make people want to stop. Traffic routes need to incorporate more lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. A footbridge will link the city center to the valley above the Neudorf district.
