Philharmonie Luxembourg
A cultural hub accessible to all
Standing proudly on the Place de l'Europe in Kirchberg, the Philharmonie Luxembourg has become one of Europe's major cultural hubs since its inauguration in 2005.
But it's much more than just a stage for artists of all kinds! Whether you're a classical music fan, a jazz aficionado or an architecture enthusiast, whether you're on the lookout for something to do with your family at the weekend or are looking for a convivial place to meet up with your colleagues after work, the "Salle de concerts Grande-Duchesse Joséphine Charlotte" (as it is officially known) opens its arms - or rather, its doors - to you.

An iconic monument to visit
The Philharmonie Luxembourg is first and foremost a place to be seen. Whether you're strolling along Avenue John F. Kennedy from the window of an airplane, or looking up at the Kirchberg as you stroll through the Lower Town, it's hard to miss this atypical and attractive building. It has to be said that the Philharmonie was specifically designed to leave no one indifferent. Its designer, Christian de Portzamparc, imagined it to be "set like a diamond within the buildings that surround it" - quite a statement!
Immaculate whiteness, a glazed façade open to the outside, curved lines encircled by more than 800 slender columns... the French architect has not lacked audacity. Open to visitors, the interior of the "Diamond" is just as captivating: a circular foyer bathed in light, three characterful halls with seating for 150 to 1,600 spectators, a panoramic balcony, and above all, not a single corner that repeats or resembles itself. From floor to ceiling, everywhere de Portzamparc wanted to evoke sound: its form, its movement, its impact on us. In addition to its aesthetic value, such a process ensures optimal acoustics, particularly in the main hall, the Grand Auditorium.

To top it all off, the Philharmonie is entering its second decade by expanding. Begun in autumn 2024, the extension work carried out by 2Portzamparc and CBA will increase the number of stages and convivial spaces by 2027.
A crossroads of musical cultures
As you can see, the Philharmonie is anything but an empty shell. When it comes to music, its heart beats first and foremost to the rhythm of theOrchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, its multi award-winning ensemble on the European stage, which will be blowing out its 90 candles in 2023.
Musicians and ensembles from all over the world perform in the Philharmonie's three large halls. Major symphony orchestras, jazz and pop legends, new music pioneers, rising stars and film-concerts form the backbone of the programming, resulting in over 400 events per season.
The year is also punctuated by at least two festivals: in October, atlântico brings together the crème de la crème of Portuguese-speaking artists , while in November, it's the turn of contemporary music to take center stage with rainy days. At the start of summer, the Grand Duchy also enjoys a double event: the traditional open-air concert by the Luxembourg Philharmonic at Kinnekswiss, and the End-of-season party, the meeting place for techno and electro fans in the Greater Region.
New shows for families

The little ones and their families are not left out either - quite the contrary! Since its inauguration in 2005, the Philharmonie has never ceased to turn its attention to young audiences. Every year, the Philharmonie's teams design new shows to instill a taste for music and bring generations together. Symphonic concerts with commentary, participatory operas, musical theater, workshops... Since its inception, the Philharmonie has established itself as a pioneer in the youth field , exporting its multilingual creations throughout Europe.
The success of these events is such that parents are strongly advised to buysubscriptions to guarantee seats, as young-audience events are often in great demand - or even saturated - as soon as they go on sale.
A few tips to get you started
If the 400 or so events organized by the Philharmonie every year make your head spin, you should know that there are plenty of ways to enjoy its program in a more convivial way. For young adults aged 30 and under, for example, the Phil30 app offers last-minute tickets for just 10 euros - for most concerts, classical or otherwise.
Even more economical: it's not uncommon for public rehearsals to be made available free of charge during lunch breaks as part of Lunch Concerts! Musicians perform in a relaxed setting for around 30 minutes, after which the Foyer bars are open to gourmets.
Afterwork possibilities abound. The " Chill at the Phil " series, for example, offers you the chance to combine business with pleasure (i.e. take your drink with you), while the Discovery Night formula invites the curious to enjoy a guided tour and aperitif before the start of their concert.
For relaxation and discovery, other unique offerings include musical yoga classes, instrument discovery workshops and artist interviews. On Sundays, it's not unusual to see the musicians of the Luxembourg Philharmonic perform in a small group before meeting up with their audience for a friendly drink.
