Luxembourg Olympic and Sports Committee

The Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL) is the central body for sport in Luxembourg.

On the COSL website, you'll find all the latest news on the forthcoming Olympic and European Games, as well as information on the athletes representing the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Today, the COSL represents over 125,000 sports members in Luxembourg. There are over 1,500 sports associations and more than 60 federations and sports groups.

His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Henri has been an IOC member since 1998. He took over from his father HRH Grand Duke Jean.

Josy Barthel (1927-1992) was Luxembourg's first (and only) Olympic gold medallist. He achieved his feat in Helsinki in 1952 in the men's 1,500 m.

More and more private sports coaches are offering individual training sessions. Ideal for keeping in shape or getting back into shape! These coaches work either at home or in a private gym. Since the Covid crisis, some are even offering video training sessions.

CK sports center, racquet sports and bowling

The CK Sports Center in Kockelscheuer is well known. Originally intended for the well-being of CK Group employees, it is now open to all.

The sports complex is mainly dedicated to racket sports (tennis, squash, badminton, padel). The Swedishtennis school offers tennis lessons.

The CK Center is also known for its 10 bowling lanes. A great place to spend an evening with friends or family. Catering available on site.

Classic races in Luxembourg

  • The season opens with the Postlaf race in March. It takes place in Luxembourg's Cloche d'Or district, over a distance of 10 km.
  • the famous ING Night Marathon, traditionally held in May,
  • the DKV Urban Trail , which takes place a few weeks before,
  • JP Morgan City-Jogging and City-Walking in July
  • the 10, 16 and 21.1 km Kulturlaf in Esch-sur-Alzette, organized in September, allows visitors to explore Luxembourg's industrial steel heritage
  • The Steel-Run in Differdange is a "crazy" 11km run in unusual locations. It also takes place in September.
  • the Wine Route Half Marathon takes place along the Moselle at the end of September
  • The Sylversterlaf in Rambrouch takes place in the Luxembourg Ardennes. Held on December 31, it is the perfect way to celebrate the start of a new year.

Nature trails in Luxembourg

For the more competitive and accomplished runners, take on the Mullerthal Ultra Trail in September in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland.

The Äischdall-Trail offers 6, 11 and 21 km running and Nordic walking trails on the Luxembourg border. The event takes place every year on August 15.

Outdoor fitness activities in Luxembourg

The City of Luxembourg provides outdoor fitness areas for all sports enthusiasts to train in the open air. The facilities are available free of charge to anyone aged 12 and over.

These facilities are located :

  • in Kockelscheuer, next to the Kockelscheuer P+R and children's playground
  • in the Vallée de la Pétrusse at 2 Rue Saint Quirin, next to the mini-golf course.

More and more local authorities are integrating these outdoor fitness facilities for their residents. Ask your local council for details.

Cycling, Luxembourg, the land of bicycles

Are you a cycling enthusiast?

Take a look at the many cycling tours available in this country, home to some of the world's greatest cycling champions. The famous Charly Gaul and the Schleck brothers are Luxembourgers.

Golf courses in and around Luxembourg

Luxembourg has several golf courses. Golfers flock to them in fine weather. Remember to book your course well in advance. Access is often restricted to season ticket holders, whether to play or to take part in competitions.

On the French side, Golf de Preisch is a lovely course. Green fees and memberships are lower.

A new golf course is due to open soon in Arlon.

Skateboarding in Luxembourg

For skateboard enthusiasts, Luxembourg offers several skate parks. You can also attend skateboarding events.

Skatepark Péitruss Luxembourg-Grund

With a total surface area of 3,400 m², the Pétrusse skatepark is located on Rue Saint Quirin in Luxembourg's Grund district. This park for skateboarders is perfectly integrated into the bucolic natural surroundings of the Unesco World Heritage site. The Skatepark's 2,500 m² of skating surface respects the environment. Delimited by stones from the remains of the fortress, you'll find a 600 m² bowl, surrounded by bleachers and a 600 m² streetplaza.

The complex has been hosting the Luxembourg International Skate Cup since 2017. This competition is a great success with the presence of the best European skateboarders.

Indoor skatepark in Luxembourg-Hollerich

The Luxembourg-Hollerich district offers an indoor skatepark at 5, rue de l'Abattoir. BMX lessons are available every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Skatepark in Luxembourg-Gasperich

Skateboard enthusiasts will find a number of ramps and inclines at Muehlenweg in the Gasperich district .

Skate Park Belval Plaza - Esch-sur-Alzette

Covering almost 700 m2, this outdoor skatepark in Esch-sur-Alzette is reminiscent of an urban square. It is equipped with the latest innovations in street furniture for skateboarding (rails, walls, stairs, etc.).

Red Rock Skate Park - Schifflange

Schifflange boasts the largest concrete skatepark in the country and in the Grande Région! It officially has no closing hours. It's even lit up during the summer months until 10pm. Admission is free. You'll find it on Chemin de Bergem (near the multi-purpose hall).

Winter sports in Luxembourg

Ice skating and rinks

For fans of ice skating, curling, field hockey or go-karting, there are several ice rinks in Luxembourg. Please note that they are only open during the winter season.

Kockelscheuer indoor skating rink

Kockelscheuer offers a large skating rink on the outskirts of Luxembourg-City.

It is open from mid-September to the end of March only. It is also closed on certain public holidays. The rink opens exceptionally for events such as the Spring Cup in March/April and the Ice Hockey Tournament in May.

Helmets and ice skates can be rented on site for safe skating. With the Pingo School, you can also learn to ice skate in group or private lessons.

Open-air skating rink in Beaufort

The northeastern town of Beaufort boasts Luxembourg's oldest skating rink . It has been in existence since 1969. Located in the open air, it is covered by a canvas tent and operates during the winter season only. Skate rental and skating assistance available.

Ice karting is also available, by reservation only.

Knuedler on ice" skating rink, Christmas entertainment in Luxembourg

The "Knuedler on ice" skating rink is part of the traditional Christmas market entertainment , much to the delight of families.

This festively decorated 800 m² ice rink invites you to skate. Skates can be rented on site, as well as bobbies for beginners. Enjoy a bite to eat in the chalets set up for the Christmas markets. Further information at

Galgebierg natural ice rink in Esch-sur-Alzette

As soon as weather conditions permit and temperatures are cold enough, skate in a natural environment at the Galgebierg park in Esch-sur-Alzette.

The Galgebierg natural ice rink offers skating fans fantastic natural conditions for practicing their favorite sport. Located in the Esch-sur-Alzette municipal park, it offers a skating area of almost 2000 m²! In summer, the surface is a huge playground for the little Esch inhabitants.

Skiing in and around Luxembourg

Do you miss the wide open spaces of the mountains where you can enjoy winter sports? Did you know that you can ski in or near Luxembourg? In fact, some resorts even offer skiing in summer!  

At Weiswampach in northern Luxembourg, you can enjoy real cross-country and even downhill skiing!

However, beware of snow conditions. Find out more on the Weiswampach commune website. You can also rent ski equipment and sledges on site.

A little further afield, you can also ski at La Baraque de Fraiture in Belgium or Snowworld in Amnéville, France. You can even ski there in midsummer, at minus 5 degrees Celsius!

And don't forget the Vosges mountains in France, around 3 hours' drive from Luxembourg. Ideal for an invigorating, sporty and even rejuvenating weekend.

Water sports in Luxembourg

On this page, you'll find our favourite addresses for swimming pools and public beaches in natural surroundings. Luxembourg has some very fine swimming pools. They generally offer relaxation and wellness facilities in addition to swimming pools. 

If you like swimming competitions, you can attend the Euromeet, which welcomes international swimmers to La Coque in Luxembourg.

Soccer and rugby matches at the Stade de Luxembourg

When it was built, the Stade de Luxembourg caused quite a stir because of its budget and construction times.

Nevertheless, today it can accommodate almost 10,000 spectators. Classified as a category 4 stadium, it can host international soccer and rugby matches. It replaces the former Josy Barthel stadium, which is due to disappear in favor of a new district to be built on the Route d'Arlon in Luxembourg.

The Luxembourg stadium is located at Ban de Gasperich, in the direction of Kockelscheueur. It will eventually be served by the tramway.

With Chèque-Service Accueil family aid, you can benefit from state aid at certain sports clubs. Find out more from your commune of residence and from the sports club. The club must be "Chèque-service-accueil" accredited.

Sports pour tous de la Ville de Luxembourg

Throughout the year, Luxembourg City organizes over 160 sports and fitness courses. These courses are open to everyone, whatever their physical condition. They take place at over 30 different indoor and outdoor venues, depending on the season.

Choose a particular course or take the passe-partout card, which gives you access to all courses. Luxembourg City residents benefit from a preferential rate. They are given priority when registering for activities.

Hiking and sports facilities in youth hostels

Luxembourg's youth hostels offer top-quality accommodation and sports facilities. They offer a wide range of group and individual activities.

Here you can enjoy hiking and other sporting activities such as mountain biking and racing. Signposted footpaths link the various youth hostels. They allow you to discover Luxembourg's beautiful landscapes and take advantage of the hotel's low-cost facilities.

During the summer season, from Easter to the end of October, you can take advantage of low-cost packages.
