Located to the east of Luxembourg City, the Hamm district covers an area of 4 km2. It is adjacent to the Cents, Bonnevoie and Pulvermühl districts.
Hamm is a discreet, mainly residential district to the east of Luxembourg City. Historically known for its American military cemetery, it retains a peaceful atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
Its green setting and village atmosphere make it a popular choice for families and those seeking a quiet environment. Although a little out of the way, it remains well connected thanks to public transport and proximity to major roads.
Its real estate development remains moderate, preserving its residential character while benefiting from its strategic proximity to business districts and the city center.
Beware of aircraft noise right in the center of the neighborhood.

Hamm, from industrial to residential
The origins of Luxembourg's Hamm district
The origins of the Hamm district date back to the construction of a monastery in the 14th century. Subsequently, like many of Luxembourg City's districts, Hamm developed mainly as a result of industrialization in the 19th century. The Godchaux company moved here around 1840, taking over the Hamm mills. The Manufacture de Draps et de Tricots moved to Schleifmühle. It was the first industry inLuxembourg to use steam in its manufacturing process. Up to 800 employees worked here. The factory closed in 1939.
Today, the site can be visited by following the attractive Godchaux circuit.
Hamm is home to two business parks. There's the Hamm industrial zone and the Mac Adam business park below.
Hamm residential area
Today, the district is essentially residential. Many of the houses in Hamm date from the 19th century.
Originally part of the municipality of Sandweiler until 1920, the Hamm district is closely linked to the Cents district.
Amenities in Luxembourg's Hamm district
Hamm lacks shops, and this can become a handicap. The famous Namur confectioner has opened a modern, friendly restaurant in Hamm. It's a great place to sample local specialities.

There is a basic school in Hamm and nurseries in the Hamm district.
St Georges' International School, which provides a British education, is also located in the Hamm district.
Access to the Hamm district, transport
Bus routes 15, 25 and 29 serve the Hamm district, with 19 bus stops.
With its Cents-Hamm train station, this district is conveniently located.
Hamm is within easy reach of the A1 freeway and Findel airport, via the Irrgarten roundabout, or Luxembourg train station.
Leisure activities in Hamm
The Hamm district is also home to a number of sports facilities. There's a sports hall, a weight room, a soccer pitch, the Hans Sowa stadium and a kayak club. There are also several playgrounds for children.

The Hamm civil hospice is located in the district. The Luxembourg crematorium is also located here.
Living in Luxembourg's Hamm district
The Hamm district remains one of Luxembourg's most affordable neighborhoods in terms of housing prices.
But beware of aircraft noise! Hamm is located on the runway alignment of thenearby Findel airport. The neighborhood is subject to noise pollution from aircraft landing and taking off over the area.
Residents are calling for more cultural activities, community gardens and the enhancement of the historical heritage. More local shops and the development of soft mobility are also requested.
