Hamm, mainly residential area
The origin of the district of Hamm dates back to the construction of a monastery in the area in the 14th century. Like a number of districts in Luxembourg, Hamm developed mainly with the industrialization in the 19th century and the installation of the Godchaux Company, Manufacture de Draps et de Tricots in Schleifmühle. It was the first industry in Luxembourg to use the steam process in its manufacturing process. Up to 800 employees worked here. The factory was closed in 1939 and the site can be visited today by following the nice marked out route of the Godchaux circuit.
The neighborhood is now a primarily residential area. Many of the houses in Hamm date from the 19th century.
It is home to the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, a cemetery for American soldiers who fell during World War II and the Battle of the Bulge. The cemetery, which houses more than 5,000 graves, can be visited every day of the year from 9am to 5pm.
