Hamm, residential area near the city

Located in the east of the city of Luxembourg, the district of Hamm covers an area of 4 km2. It of the districts of Cents, Bonnevoie and Pulvermühl.

Hamm, from industrial to residential

The origins of the Hamm district

The origin of the district of Hamm dates back to the construction of a monastery in the 14th century. Subsequently, like many of Luxembourg City’s districts, Hamm developed mainly as a result of industrialization in the 19th century. The Godchaux Company settled there around 1840 by buying the mills of Hamm. The cloth and knitwear factory moves to Schleifmühle. It was the first industry in Luxembourg to use the steam process in its manufacturing process. Up to 800 employees worked here. The factory was closed in 1939.

The site can now be visited by following the beautiful marked route of the Godchaux circuit.

There are two business parks in the Hamm district. There is the Hamm industrial area and the Mac Adam business park below.

Residential area

The neighborhood is now a primarily residential area. Many of the houses in Hamm date from the 19th century.

Originally part of the municipality of Sandweiler until 1920, the district of Hamm is closely linked to that of Cents .

Amenities in the Hamm district

Hamm lacks shops and this can become a handicap. The famous Namur confectioner has opened a modern and welcoming restaurant in Hamm. It’s a great place to sample local specialities.

Schools: There is a basic school in Hamm and nurseries. St Georges’ International School, which provides a British education, is also located in the Hamm district.

Transportation/bus-train: Bus routes 15, 25, 29 serve the Hamm area. with 19 bus stops. With a Cents-Hamm train station, this neighborhood is well located. The A1 freeway and the Findel airport can be reached quickly via the Irrgarten roundabout, or the Luxembourg train station.

The neighborhood also houses several sports facilities. The district offers a sports hall, a weight room, a soccer field, the Hans Sowa stadium, as well as a kayak club. Several playgrounds are available for children.

You can enjoy the beautiful forest where you can follow marked trails.

The civil hospice of Hamm is located in the neighborhood.

There is also the crematorium of Luxembourg.

Living in Hamm

The district of Hamm remains one of the most accessible districts in terms of housing prices in Luxembourg.

But beware of aircraft noise! Hamm is located on the runway alignment of the nearby Findel airport. The neighborhood is subject to noise pollution from planes that fly over the area during takeoff and landing.
