Getting around by train in Luxembourg and beyond

All rail travel in Luxembourg is managed by CFL, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois.

CFL passenger trains are eco-responsible means of transport. They are powered by 100% renewable and CO2 emission-free electrical energy.

Free rail travel in Luxembourg, excluding First Class

Since February 2020, public transport in Luxembourg has been free. A world first!

However, this measure only applies to 2nd class public transport on Luxembourg territory. First-class rail travel will continue to be charged at a monthly rate of 75 euros for season tickets. Bus travel, on the other hand, is free.

Regiozone cross-border ticket prices 

Despite free transport in Luxembourg, cross-border commuters and other TER Grande Région users have to pay the fare for the part of the journey outside the Grand Duchy.

Buy train tickets

To take the train, you can buy your tickets and season tickets directly from the ticket offices at CFL stations just before boarding the train, or book by phone or internet.

This does not apply to TGV trains, which are reserved for passengers with advance reservations.

Please note that annual season tickets are now only available from companies in neighboring countries: Deutsche Bahn, SNCF and SNCB.

On the CFL website, you can book and buy your train ticket online to the following European countries: France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland

You can order your ticket by telephone on +352 24 89 24 89 on working days from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm. Within 2 working days of your order, your ticket will arrive by post with all your travel details.

mTicket, mobile ticket office

The mTicket app is your mobile ticket office for 2-hour, 1-day and monthly passes for the RegioZone cross-border network.

mKaart, travel tickets

The mKaart is a highly functional plastic smart card in credit card format, on which 1st class and cross-border tickets can be loaded electronically.

It also includes access to the Vël'OK service in Esch-sur-Alzette, access to mBox bike parks, and the Chargy service for public charging stations for electric cars.

The mKaart can be obtained from CFL ticket offices, the Centrale de Mobilité at Luxembourg and Belval Université stations, the AVL (Infobox) at the Centre Hamilius, and the TICE ticket office at Esch-sur-Alzette station.

Your mKaart can then be credited directly to your mShop.lu account.

Luxembourg-City TGV station

From Luxembourg-City, you can reach Paris Gare de l'Est in 2h20 thanks to the direct TGV train.

Several other destinations in France are served by TGV from Luxembourg station. Access to the TGV train is reserved for people who have purchased their ticket in advance and have a reservation.

Since transport is free, only the largest stations have maintained their CFL ticket offices. Passengers may purchase tickets directly from ticket machines on the platform.

Timetable CFL Luxembourg station ticket offices

The central ticket offices at Luxembourg station are open from 6.00 am to 9.00 pm Monday to Friday, and from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

International transport counters are open from 5:00 to 21:30 Monday to Sunday, and on public holidays. Telephone information services are available from 06:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday, and from 8:00 to 20:00 on Sundays and public holidays.

There are also ticket machines where you can buy tickets outside these hours.

Belval-Université CFL station timetable

On weekdays, the ticket offices at Belval Université station open at 7.00 am and close at 7.00 pm. They are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Esch-sur-Alzette CFL station timetable

The ticket offices at Esch-sur-Alzette CFL station are open from 6.15 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
