The Kirchberg (Kierchbierg) neighborhood is a vast plateau located northeast of the city of Luxembourg. It is one of the 24 neighborhoods of the Luxembourg capital.

The Kirchberg neighborhood is adjacent to the neighborhoods of Weimerskirch, Neudorf/Weimershof, and Clausen.

Overview of the Kirchberg District

Divided in two by John Fitzgerald Kennedy Avenue, Kirchberg is the modern financial district of Luxembourg City. It is characterized by its contemporary architecture and prestigious infrastructure.

It is home to the European institutions, as well as numerous banks and international companies.

But beyond its image as a business district, Kirchberg is also a mixed-use neighborhood with residential, cultural, and recreational offerings. Kirchberg features residential areas and shops, as well as Luxembourgish elementary schools and international schools.

You’ll also find cultural venues such as the Philharmonie and the Museum of Modern Art (Mudam).

Its accessibility is enhanced by the tram system and major roadways.

Nevertheless , the neighborhood has many advantages due to its ongoing development, with new projects aimed at balancing professional and residential life. However, its atmosphere may seem colder and more functional outside of business hours in the business district.

The History of the Kirchberg Neighborhood

Agricultural land until the mid-20th century, the Kirchbergdistrict is now a hub of activity due to its strong economic presence. It is one of the major districts of Luxembourg City.

The Kirchberg plateau underwent a transformationwith the arrival of European institutions in the 1950s and 1960s. Its fields and farmland gave way to large office buildings. The neighborhood then experienced its full-scale development in the 1980s, alongside the growth of the financial sector in Luxembourg.

In recent years, the Kirchberg Fund has been promoting a rebalancing of the neighborhood through the construction of numerous residential buildings.

The Kirchberg neighborhood has been growing very rapidly in recent years with the construction of new residential areas. Today, it is the neighborhood with the largest foreign population after theGare neighborhood. It primarily attracts a population of young professionals working in the area.

The European Union and Business in Luxembourg

Witha business-oriented atmosphere during the day, the northern and southern sections of Kennedy Avenue are home to European institutions and businesses.

Coming from downtown Luxembourg, you’ll find the Towers of Europe, home to the European institutions. It’s important to note that Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union and plays an active role in its institutions:

  • Council of the European Union (or Council of Ministers): It generallymeets in Brussels, but the April, June, and October sessions are held in Luxembourg
  • Court of Justice and General Court of the European Union: Luxembourg has been the judicial capital of Europe since 1952
  • European Court of Auditors
  • European Investment Bank and European Investment Fund
  • General Secretariat of the European Parliament
  • Eurostat and the Publications Office ( Jean MonnetBuilding )

Further down Kennedy Avenue toward the Serra Roundabout, you’ll find major banks and financial firms, auditing and law firms, and many other prestigious names in Luxembourg’s economy, as well as other international companies. The Kirchberg is, on its own scale, the equivalent of London’s “City.”

Architecture enthusiasts will be delighted by the facades of the institutional buildings, which feature rich and varied architectural styles: Deutsche Bank, KPMG, the Court of Justice, the EIB, and more.
ArcelorMittal, one of Luxembourg’s largest employers, is currently building its headquarters there. The building promises to be magnificent.

Kirchberg, a Cultural District in Luxembourg

Philharmonic Hall and Philharmonic Orchestra

You’ll also be sure to admire the magnificent Philharmonie building—or the Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte Concert Hall—designed by the renowned architect Christian de Portzamparc, who has created numerous buildings across Europe and beyond. Guided tours allow you to admire the rows of columns, the various concert halls, and even take a walk behind the scenes and onto the stage of the Grand Auditorium. A wonderful experience to enjoy with the whole family.

The Luxembourg Philharmonic has three halls to welcome music lovers and enthusiasts. The Grand Auditorium, with its extraordinary architecture and design, can seat 1,500 people. The Chamber Music Hall offers 300 seats for more intimate concerts. The 180-seat Espace Découverte hosts concerts for children and musical projects.

All of the venues offer unparalleled acoustics. A concert in the Grand Auditorium featuring the Philharmonic Orchestra’s choirs is an extraordinary experience.

But Avenue Kennedy is also home to numerous recreational and cultural activities.

Leisure and Culture in the Kirchberg District

Next to the Philharmonie, the Mudam—the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art, set against the backdrop of the old Luxembourg Fortress—was designedby architect Ieoh Ming Pei (1917–2019).

Mudam showcases some of the finest collections of contemporary art. The FortressMuseum , along with the Drai Eechelen Museum and Fort Thungen, round out the cultural offerings on this side of the avenue.

Across from Kennedy Avenue, the LuxExpo Exhibition Center regularly hosts events. You can stroll through its halls to visit the famous Festival des Migrations or the European contemporary art fair Art3f.

You’ll also find numerous works of art and sculptures in Kirchberg : the birdcage by Luxembourgish artist Su-Mei Tse, the monumental sculpture “Exchange” by American sculptor Richard Serra, Giovanni Teconi’s “Grande fleur qui marche,” and the “Lange Bänker,” which depicts a stern banker…

The LUGA 2025 exhibition brings a vast display of urban gardens to the neighborhood.

Amenities in the Kirchberg neighborhood

The Kirchberg Hospital and the Bohler Clinic are significantassets to the neighborhood. Located at the entrance to the neighborhood, near the Serra Roundabout, at the A1 highway exit, they offer high-quality medical facilities.

Schools and Childcare in Kirchberg

Residents of the Kirchberg neighborhood in Luxembourg also benefit from the presence of several elementary schools, an after-school program, and several daycare centers.

Kirchberg is also home to the European School. The Sainte Sophie private school is also nearby in the Weimershof neighborhood . One of the campuses of the University of Luxembourg is also located in this area.

Transportation in Kirchberg

The Kirchberg neighborhood is particularly well-connected.

The Serra roundabout in Kirchberg serves as a major gateway to the city of Luxembourg, functioning as a key transportation hub. Directly connected to the A1 highway toward Germany, you can reach the Limpertsberg neighborhood and downtown Luxembourg via the Pont Rouge Grande-Duchesse Charlotte.

If desired, the Gernsbach P+R parking lot and the Findel Airport parking lot accommodate commuters, who can leave their vehicles there and continue their journey using more sustainable modes of transportation. Several bus lines serve the city center via Adenauer Avenue. A Vél’Oh station and an MBox also offer the option of continuing your journey by bike. Also worth noting is the pleasant bike path connecting this neighborhood to Senningerberg in the municipality of Niederanven.

Connected to the funicular, the tram serves, in particular, the landlocked neighborhood of Pfaffenthal, located below Kirchberg. It then continues to the historic center of the Ville-Haute and the central train station. The tram then continues on to the southern neighborhoods of Cloche d’Or, Luxembourg’s new business district . In the opposite direction, the tram connects Kirchberg with the LuxExpo exhibition center and Findel International Airport.

Shopping in Kirchberg

To the north of Kirchberg, the Auchan shopping center features a 12,500 m² hypermarket spread over two floors, with covered parking offering two hours of free parking, as well as a shopping mall with 50 stores and 19 restaurants. On the other side, the Infinity real estate project has added new retail spaces across from the Philharmonie concert hall.

Recreation in Kirchberg

In addition to the Mudam, the museum of modern art, and the Philharmonie, Kirchberg is also known for its recreational facilities, such as the large La Coque sports complex with its swimming pool and climbing wall, as well as the Kinepolis multiplex cinema.

A large green space behind La Coque offers a refreshing escape in the summer, featuring an outdoor dining area called “Le Kiosk”—known for its famous “Flammekuechen”—which is open when the weather is nice .

The LuxExpo exhibition center welcomes thousands of visitors each year for its various exhibitions and trade shows. It is also the start and finish line for the famous ING Night Marathon, the largest sporting event in Luxembourg.

Living in the Kirchberg neighborhood

Kirchberg, a residential neighborhood in Luxembourg

In addition to the historic Kirchberg neighborhood, which has retained its more “village-like” atmosphere, the area is undergoing transformation and now offers a wide range of residential housing.

Adenauer Avenue and its surroundings are currently the site of major construction projects for residential housing that will help rebalance the neighborhood. Kirchberg is now a truly mixed-use neighborhood with many amenities.

Several major real estate projects are expected to be completed there in the coming years.

Quality of Life in Kirchberg

Separated from Luxembourg’s historic center by the Grande Duchesse Charlotte Bridge (or Red Bridge), Kirchberg offers many attractions. Nevertheless, we are specifically hoping for more pedestrian-friendly spaces with a genuine neighborhood atmosphere. Local services are currently concentrated mainly on Avenue JF Kennedy, to the detriment of the more residential neighborhoods.

The goal, however, is to rebalance the ratio between residential and office space to restore a more human touch to this neighborhood.

As a result, more than 25,000 residents are expected in the long term, whereas the neighborhood had fewer than 5,700 residents in 2017. The workforce is also expected to grow significantly, as evidenced by the magnificent ArcelorMittal headquarters currently under construction in the European Quarter. 12,000 workers were employed in Kirchberg in 2020. That number is projected to reach 40,000 by 2025 and exceed 66,000 by 2040.

Developments in the Kirchberg District

A number of new neighborhoods are currently being developed within the Kirchberg area: the Kiem neighborhood (820 housing units), Réimerwee (480 housing units), Grünwald, and Kennedy South.
The Op der Schleed project north of Adenauer Boulevard is expected to see the construction of nearly 4,800 housing units, accommodating more than 10,000 additional residents within 30 years.

In addition, the Kirchberg Fund, which manages the district, has commissioned an architectural firm to redesign the public spaces. The goal is to give this neighborhood—which is considered too cold and impersonal—a more human touch. Residents of the Kiem neighborhood are calling for more gathering places to encourage interaction in this new area.

Retail spaces are to be added to the ground floors of buildings, and street furniture will be installed to encourage people to linger. Traffic routes must incorporate more lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. A footbridge will connect the city center over the Neudorf neighborhood in the valley.
