Transport developments in Luxembourg, Mobility Plan 2035
The Mobility Plan 2035 promotes a scalable and sustainable tram system, with numerous branches beyond the T1 line currently in service. The aim is to serve transport hubs, which are key connection points between the various modes of transport in Luxembourg.
Better service for the Kirchberg district
The K2 tram line will double the service to the Kirchberg district on the Boulevard Adenauer axis between LuxExpo and the train station. It is expected to be operational from the start of the 2027 academic year.
Work has already begun on the section between the Pfaffenthal/Kirchberg transport hub at Pont Rouge andthe European School on Boulevard Adenauer.
The work also includes the creation of a cycle path to promote soft mobility, lined with some 400 trees.
Expansion to the new districts of Hollerich
The tram will also serve the Hollerich district and its new neighborhoods, improving its connection with the rest of the city. This line, known as HOA, is expected to be operational in 2027. It will likely be extended to the Bouillon P+R parking lot.
A transport hub to the west
A new tram line is expected to link the Bouillon car park and the CHL (Centre hospitalier de Luxembourg) in 2032 to a new P+R West via the Route d'Arlon and the new Wunnquartier Stade district. This project is also part of the redevelopment of the Place de l'Etoile to create a new living space.
Luxembourg-Esch-sur-Alzette rapid tram
A new rapid tram line is also planned between the Cloche d'Or district and the city of Esch-sur-Alzette, due tobe completed in 2030-2031. Passengers will be able to travel at 100km/h and reach both cities with a stop in Leudelange to serve the industrial zone.
This service will make it possible to travel from Belvaux to Findel in less than an hour.
This new tram line will be accompanied by a cycle path and improvements to the corresponding motorways. A carpool lane will help to ease traffic congestion during rush hour, along with a bus lane.
