Daycare centers and schools

Three public schools, equipped with modern facilities, are located within the municipality. They cover grades 1–3 in Béreldange and Helmsange, and grades 1–4 in Walferdange. A school bus service is available to parents. The buses take children to school and bring them back after class. Please contact the municipality for more information.

The Charlemagne School in the municipality offers traditional French-language education for children up to age 12.

Two daycare centers located in Walferdange and Béreldange provide daycare services for children in the municipality.

The municipality also has several private daycare centers, which are ideal if you are unable to secure a spot in the municipal facilities.

Transportation in the municipality of Walferdange

The town of Walferdange is very well connected to the city of Luxembourg. Several bus lines run through the municipality.

Walferdange’s location between Luxembourg City and the route to the north of the country makes it a heavily trafficked corridor. Traffic congestion is common during rush hour heading toward the capital.

The Walferdange train station offers an attractive alternative to driving. The train ride takes approximately 10 minutes to reach Luxembourg Central Station.

A P+R parking lot located on Rue du Pont in Béreldange allows for free travel by public transit to the capital.

The municipality now offers the Vel'Oh! bike-sharing service, as do the capital and six other municipalities bordering the city of Luxembourg.

An on-demand bus service, Flexibus, is available to residents. It takes you wherever you want to go within the municipality of Walferdange. Simply call 45 minutes in advance. The shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at your desired location.

Shops and Businesses in the Municipality of Walferdange

The municipality of Walferdange offers a wide variety of local shops and larger international chains.

You’ll find home improvement stores, beauty and hair salons, bakeries and other food shops, auto repair shops and services, bookstores, and more. You can also visit the Raiffeisen bank branch in Walferdange or the AXA insurance agency in Béreldange.

The Walferdange Shopping Center is a great place to shop.

Leisure and Tourism in the Municipality of Walferdange

Walferdange offers excellent facilities for leisure and sports, particularly soccer and tennis. More than 80 clubs offer opportunities to participate in all kinds of activities. The municipality is very dynamic.

The annual race, the "Walfer Vollekslaf," brings together several thousand runners every year in early October for a 12-km course. Various routes are available, including options suitable for younger participants.

The Alzette Bike Path runs along the Alzette Valley for 31 km, connecting Béreldange to Ettelbruck.

The Prince Henri Cultural Center can accommodate up to 800 people.

The Château de Walferdange, meanwhile, is of historical interest. The Grand Ducal family resided there in the 19th century. The University Campus was previously located there, but classes have not been held since 2015. The building is now used by the Ministry of National Education, Children, and Youth.

The municipality of Walferdange is believed to date back to Celtic times. Gypsum mines have been discovered in the Walferdange area, dating back to the first settlers. They are, of course, no longer in operation.

There are also Roman sites in the area. A Roman villa, consisting of some fifty different rooms, stretches over 100 meters in length at the foot of the Sonnebierg. Archaeological research has uncovered numerous coins and a purse dating from the 3rd century BC. Several types of pottery have also been identified at the site, dating from the 4th to the 1st century BC.
The Raschpëtzer walking trail in the Helmsange Forest offers the chance to explore several Roman wells, each dozens of meters deep. Learn more about the history of Luxembourg.

Helmsange is home to the Sonnebierg Nature Reserve. It is home to nearly 150 species of very rare plants, including a dozen different species of orchids. Picking them is, of course, prohibited.
