The Gare District is one of the smallest districts in the City of Luxembourg. It is also one of the most densely populated. Furthermore, it has the highest concentration of foreign residents.

Ideal due to its proximity to the Luxembourg train station and shops, it offers a diverse and very lively atmosphere. It also represents the worst of Luxembourg City in terms of drug trafficking, crime, and prostitution.

La Gare, a popular and diverse neighborhood in Luxembourg

Central and diverse, the La Gare neighborhood in Luxembourg is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Hollerich, Grund, Bonnevoie, and the City Center of Luxembourg (Ville-Haute).

It is the neighborhood with the highest concentration of foreigners in Luxembourg City, with over 80% of residents being non-Luxembourgers.

Bustling with its many shops and the comings and goings of numerous travelers, the Gare neighborhood is one of the most popular and diverse neighborhoods in Luxembourg City. It is one of the smallest neighborhoods in Luxembourg in terms of size, but also one of the most densely populated. It is primarily appreciated for its high concentration of shops.

Magnificent buildings on the Plateau Bourbon in the Gare district

Its northern part, known as the Plateau Bourbon, is separated from the heart of the capital by the Adolphe Bridge. This magnificent historic bridge overlooking the Pétrusse Valley has recently been renovated. It accommodates both cars and trams, while also providing a completely safe crossing with its pedestrian and bicycle walkway. Be sure to stop by—it offers a magnificent view of the Upper Town and its cathedral.

The Plateau Bourbon area features magnificent residential buildings, including the former headquarters of the ArcelorMittal Group. Avenue de la Liberté, located just a stone’s throw from the shops, is lined with magnificent 19th-century architectural structures.

Beautiful 19th-century single-family homes are located in the Pétrusse area. Several embassies have set up shop there. This neighborhood is also notable for the beauty of its residential buildings. In some streets, charming Haussmann-style apartments date back to the 19th century.

Shops and Services in the Luxembourg Station Neighborhood

The area closest to the station is home to many shops and some government offices. The construction of the tram line and the lengthy work have hurt local businesses. Unfortunately, many stores have closed their doors. The neighborhood is struggling to regain its vitality, despite the redevelopment of Place de Paris. Rue de Strasbourg is set to be revitalized and made safer soon, offering more pedestrian spaces and greenery.

Nevertheless, the neighborhood comes alive during commercial events such as Mantelsonndeg in October.

Safety Issues Around Luxembourg Station

The Gare neighborhood is widely criticized today for its lack of safety. With its center of gravity being the capital’s central station, it attracts a very diverse population. Traffic and drug use are regularly cited by residents, leading to local tensions. The issue is clearly a priority for the current administration.

The “A vos côtés” service, established by the Inter-Actions Association, is now working to improve safety in the Gare neighborhood, particularly around Rue de Strasbourg. This service offers accompaniment during your travels and a visible presence on the streets to defuse potential security issues.

Funded by the City of Luxembourg, this service also operates in the Bonnevoie neighborhood and in the streets of the Upper Town, where begging has been banned.

The Grand Ducal Police are also urging travelers to be vigilant on public transportation. The number of assaults and thefts has risen sharply in 2025.

Amenities in the Gare neighborhood

The Gare neighborhood is a popular area known for its shops, restaurants, and lively community life. It is strategically located for residents without cars.

Residents would like to see more electric charging stations and traffic restrictions on certain roads to make bike lanes safer.

Shops in the Gare neighborhood

The Gare neighborhood is a shopping district, particularly Rue de la Gare and the area around Place de Paris. Unfortunately, tram construction has hurt local businesses. More than twenty have closed their doors.

Nevertheless, you’ll find many clothing, home decor, and cosmetics stores, as well as bakeries. Several retail chains are present in the neighborhood. These include This commercial diversity makes the Gare neighborhood a place where everything is accessible in one location.

Several supermarkets and grocery stores are located here: Monoprix, Delhaize, a Carrefour Market, and a Cactus Market.

Every Thursday, Place de Paris hosts the Garer Maart.

Outings and Leisure in the Gare Neighborhood

Numerous cafés and restaurants bring the neighborhood to life. Be mindful of your curfew; the neighborhood isn’t always well-populated.

Nightclubs, hostess bars, and establishments with sex workers cater to night owls in this neighborhood. Safety, however, remains a major concern and a real challenge for the city.

One of the most famous Christmas markets is also located on Place de Paris.

Schools and Daycare Centers in the Gare Neighborhood

There is only one elementary school in this neighborhood. Several daycare centers and after-school programs are available in the Gare area. Please note that spots are in high demand due to the presence of social housing in the area and the government’s coverage of costs for refugee populations.

Public Transportation and Parking in the Gare Neighborhood

The Gare neighborhood is one of the best-served in terms of public transportation. Located, as its name suggests, in the immediate vicinity of Luxembourg City’s train station, it also benefits from numerous bus stops serving the regions of Luxembourg and the Greater Region.

The tram passes in front of the station and serves the city center and the Kirchberg district. Its extension to Cloche d’Or is scheduled for 2024. Itwill reach Findel Airport in 2025 .

The Fort Neipperg and Fort Wedell parking lots offer two hours of free parking on weekdays and Sundays, and four hours free on Saturdays to support local businesses. The parking lot next to Luxembourg Central Station features a “Kiss and Go” zone for quick drop-offs.

Despite numerous efforts to improve safety in the neighborhood, the streets immediately surrounding the train station have a bad reputation. Issues with prostitution, drugs, and petty crime remain a problem, especially at night. A group of neighborhood residents is working to improve safety and living conditions around the train station.

Rue de Strasbourg, the main thoroughfare of the Gare neighborhood, is set to be redesigned. The goal is to make this street more welcoming. Safety will also be a priority, with improved accessibility for pedestrians. Cars will be slowed down by raised curbs. Parking lots will give way to outdoor seating areas.
