Surrounded by forests and farmland, the Dommeldange neighborhood—or Dommeldingen in Luxembourgish—is located northeast of Luxembourg City, near the neighborhoods of Beggen, Weimerskirch, and Eich, in the Alzette Valley.

A village-like yet modern atmosphere in Dommeldange

The Dommeldange neighborhood in Luxembourg is divided into two fairly distinct areas.

The historic central part of Dommeldange

Located in the Alzette Valley, Dommeldange was originally part of the municipalityof Eich before it was incorporated into the City of Luxembourg in 1920.

The Dommeldange steelworks operated until 1980. Remnants of this industry can still be found in the neighborhood. It was in Dommeldange that the first forgein Luxembourg’s steelmaking history was established in 1609. At its peak, four blast furnaces operated here, producing nearly 35,000 tons of iron ore in 1866. Remnants of this industry can still be seen near the Russian Embassy.

Dommeldange Castle was built in the 17th century by Charles Collart, owner of the Grunwald forge, as his private residence. The castle still stands today and now houses the Chinese Embassy.

Housing developments in the newer part of Dommeldange

The newer part of the Dommeldange neighborhood is located on the hills of Mont Dommeldange. It consists mainly of massive housing developments, offices, and hotels. The massive buildings, including the Terrasses de l’Europe, are easily recognizable. Designed by German architect Peter Neufert, they are notable examples of 1970s architecture. They overlook the entire valley and the Route d’Echternach leading to northern Luxembourg and the access to the A7 northern highway.

There are two elementary schools. An after-school program is also available for children in the municipality. The neighborhood also offers two daycare centers.

The Lycée des Arts et Métiers is located on two campuses, including Dommeldange and Limpertsberg. The Emile Metz Private Technical High School rounds out the secondary school options in this part of Luxembourg City.

There is also a school dormitory on Rue du Château. For daycare centers, look toward Walferdange and Beggen.

Public transportation in the Dommeldange neighborhood

Bus lines 12, 23, and 25 serve this neighborhood.

The historic part of Dommeldange also includes the train station, which opened in 1862. It is located on the Luxembourg-Ettelbruck railway line.

Things to Do and Leisure in Dommeldange

The Dommeldange neighborhood is located in the Alzette Valley. It boasts a lush green environment, with recreational spaces such as Europe Park. Hiking trails allow visitors to explore the wooded areas of Eecherfeld and Mont Dommeldange.

Dommeldange also offers sports facilities such as a multi-purpose sports hall, a pétanque court, playgrounds, and a skatepark on Rue Nicolas Hein.

A cultural center has been established in the former Drescher carpentry shop.
