The Beggen District in Luxembourg
The Beggen district is one of the 24 districts that make up the city of Luxembourg. It is located in the north of the city between the districts of Dommeldange, Eich, and Mühlenbach.

Luxembourgers make up about one-third of Beggen’s population. The French community, the largest foreign community, accounts for 12%, while Portuguese residents make up 10% of the population.
The Beggen Neighborhood
Bordered by the Eich neighborhood to the south, Dommeldange to the east, and Mühlenbach to the west, the Beggen neighborhood is organized around a main thoroughfare, Rue de Beggen. It connects the capital of Luxembourg to the municipality of Walferdange.
Originally, in the 17th century, the Beggen neighborhood was a tiny hamlet of seven households. It was thanks to industrialization and the country’s need for labor that this neighborhood began to develop in the late 19th century.
The Beggen Church was built in 1965. Its imposing bell tower is the symbol of this neighborhood, bordered by the Alzette River and the railroad tracks.
Beggen Castle now houses the Russian Embassy. It has regularly drawn protesters since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Today, the Beggen area is primarily inhabited by a foreign community. It consists of a main thoroughfare lined with numerous shops and shopping centers. Its smaller, perpendicular streets, which are more residential, feature single-family homes with gardens.
Beggen is a green oasis near the city. It boasts attractive walking and cycling paths through the green spaces of the Eecherfeld and Mount Dommeldange.

There is an elementary school and a school dormitory in Beggen. Several daycare centers care for infants and children under 4, one of which uses the Montessori method. The Emile Metz Technical High School is also located here.

The Espace shopping center also offers music and dance classes, a sports club, and more. It’s very convenient for running errands while the kids are at their after-school activities.
Several playgrounds offer young children the perfect setting to have fun. The new “Wichtelcher” playground, themed around folklore gnomes, features obstacle courses and climbing structures, huts for playing hide-and-seek, as well as swings and slides. It is located on Rue Henri Dunant; there is also a stadium, a multi-purpose sports hall, a soccer field, tennis courts, and a cultural center.
