If it is not a medical emergency and it is not during night hours, consult a doctor or a medical center before going to the emergency room.
Languages used in hospital services
Luxembourg has three official languages: Luxembourgish, French, and German. The country’s healthcare professionals and hospital staff speak at least one of these languages. English is also widely spoken. It is therefore very easy to make yourself understood as a foreigner arriving in Luxembourg.
Admissions to Luxembourg Hospitals
In Luxembourg, you can go to the hospital for a medical examination, a routine consultation, a scheduled admission, or in an emergency.
For your admission, including for a scheduled appointment, you must go to the reception desk of the relevant department with a valid ID, your social security card, and proof of any supplementary health insurance you may have. If you are not enrolled in health insurance, you will be asked to pay a deposit. You will receive the final bill later by mail.
If you have medical records or prescriptions, it is also helpful to bring them with you upon admission.
Admission of a minor requires authorization from the person with parental authority.
In the caseof emergency admission, these administrative procedures may be completed at a later date.
Payment and Reimbursement for Hospital Care
Hospitalization and medical treatment can be expensive in Luxembourg. It is therefore important to have valid health insurance coverage, whether through your employer or a private policy. This will help cover the costs of your hospitalization and medical treatment.
For outpatient care, the patient pays the doctor directly upon discharge or receives an invoice sent to their home. The patient must then submit a reimbursement claim to the health insurance fund.
In the case of hospitalization, the cost of the stay is generally covered by the CNS (third-party payment). However, the insured person must pay the daily copayment directly for those over 18 years of age.
Additionally, surcharges for a higher-quality room are not covered by health insurance. The insured person must therefore have taken out supplementary health insurance in advance . We explain why here.
For cross-border workers, please refer to the CNS procedures.
Visiting a patient in a hospital, clinic, or maternity ward
Visitors are generally allowed in Luxembourg hospitals, but there may be restrictions. This was particularly the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, other reasons may also justify prohibiting outside visitors to a hospitalized patient. Check with hospital staffin advance and follow the current guidelines or protocols.
Visiting hours for patients are strictly defined. Visitors must adhere to these hours to allow patients to rest and healthcare staff to do their work. Generally, visits are permitted in the afternoons only. Check directly with the hospital in advance.
