Most residents are covered by the national health insurance system, funded by social security contributions. Cross-border workers also benefit from the Luxembourg healthcare system, with a few specific provisions.

If you are not covered by the national health insurance system, you will need to take out private health insurance.

Cost of medical consultations in Luxembourg

The cost of a medical consultation in Luxembourg varies depending on the doctor and the type of consultation. A consultation with a general practitioner costs 61 euros as of January 1, 2026.

The fee is indexed in the same way as income and wages.

Consultation costs are determined by a fee schedule established by the National Health Fund, which uses this basis to cover healthcare expenses.

Thus, the base rates for healthcare professionals in Luxembourg are as follows in 2025:

  • pediatrician: 44.30 euros
  • gynecologist: 66.10 euros
  • daytime emergency room visit: starting at 63.30 euros; nighttime: starting at 102.10 euros
  • dentist: 39.40 euros
  • cardiologist: 48.10 euros
  • psychiatrist: 59.10 euros

How do I see a doctor in Luxembourg?

If you get sick and need to see a doctor, it’s best to start with a general practitioner. If necessary, they’ll refer you to a specialist and write a prescription, which will help you get a better reimbursement from the CNS.

As a reminder, it is mandatory to provide a doctor’s note if you are absent from work due to illness starting on the third day of absence as an employee.

To see a doctor in Luxembourg, you generally need to make an appointment in advance. You can either call the doctor’s office or book an appointment online, depending on the doctor’s preference.

Some doctors offer walk-in appointments. However, it is best to check in advance. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many doctors have been seeing patients by appointment only.

How do I find a doctor?

To easily find a doctor or dentist, consult the official registry of doctors practicing in Luxembourg on the Medical Association’s website.

To make an appointment, you can call the doctor’s office directly. Some doctors are also listed in the directories of online medical platforms such as Doctena.lu.

You can book an appointment directly online based on the availability dates and times of the listed practitioners. Some doctors also offer video consultations.

Please note: if you cancel your medical appointment less than 24 hours in advance, some doctors will still charge for the consultation. This also applies if you do not show up for your appointment.

Doctors are also authorized to administer vaccinations.

Do you need to see a doctor during the night or at the weekend? Is your usual doctor's office closed and you need medical advice or a consultation?

Doctors and dentists only see patients during weekday business hours. There are no on-call doctors in Luxembourg.

The Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg offers an emergency dental service.

Medical centers provide a replacement service for general practitioners for nighttime, weekend, and holiday care when doctors' offices are closed.

Medical centers offer evening and weekend medical services at certain times. Please note that medical centers are not emergency services!

There are three medical centers in Luxembourg:

  • Medical center on call for the center of the country located in Luxembourg: 23 Val Fleuri, L-1526 Luxembourg. Patients are seen without an appointment.
  • Medical center on call for the north, located in Ettelbruck: 110, av. Lucien Salentiny L-9080 Ettelbruck. You must make an appointment in advance via this website or by telephone (+352) 20 333 111. Appointments can be made from 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. on weekends and public holidays.
  • Medical center on call for the south, located in Esch/Alzette- Belval district: 3-5, avenue du Swing, L-4367 Belvaux (Esch-Belval). Patients are seen without an appointment.

Medical center opening hours:

  • Monday to Friday from 8 p.m. to midnight
  • Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Luxembourg Association of Osteopaths – ALDO

Osteopathy is based on the diagnosis and manual treatment of individuals suffering from functional disorders and physical pain. The goal is to restore the patient’s mobility and physical well-being.

Osteopathy is suitable for adults, children, and infants.

More and more patients are turning to this profession to treat a wide range of ailments and conditions, including physical pain. Some also seek osteopathic care for other issues, such as depression.

You do not need a doctor’s prescription to see an osteopath.

Osteopaths treat adults, children, and even infants.

Osteopathy sessions are not covered by the CNS.

However, an increasing number of supplemental insurance plans cover the cost of treatment. Osteopaths set their own rates. Be sure to inquire in advance.

Luxembourg Association of Physical Therapists – ALK

As a patient, you are free to choose your practitioner, whether for therapeutic care or wellness-related services. Physical therapists treat a wide range of conditions, whether muscular, respiratory, joint-related, or other.

For physical therapy to be covered by your health insurance, the sessions must first be prescribed by a general practitioner. Please note that the prescription must be approved by the CNS. Be sure to inquire about this when scheduling an appointment with the physical therapist. The reimbursement rate is generally 70%, except in certain cases where it is 100%.

Luxembourg Association of Speech-Language Pathologists (Speech Therapists) – ALO

Speech-language pathologists are responsible for diagnosing and treating difficulties with written and spoken language and expression in children and adults.

The most common disorders include lisping, stuttering, speech delays, or any other difficulty related to writing or oral expression.

There is a Speech Therapy Center in Strassen, under the supervision of the Ministry of National Education, Children, and Youth. It provides care for children with speech and language disorders so they can receive a standard Luxembourgish education. The children in care are reintegrated into the regular school system once their disorders have resolved.

Psychological Consultations in Luxembourg

Consultations with a psychologist or psychotherapist are now reimbursed by the CNS upon presentation of a doctor’s prescription. Please also check with your supplemental health insurance provider.

Luxembourg Mental Health Center

The Mental Health Center, in collaboration with the Luxembourg League for Mental Health (D’Ligue), offers psychological and psychiatric consultations by appointment.

This free service is available to adults suffering from psychosocial disorders, depression, personality disorders, anxiety attacks, etc., whether or not these stem from a traumatic event. Therapeutic housing may be provided if needed.

Luxembourg Society of Psychology (asbl)

There are over 300 psychologists and psychotherapists in Luxembourg. The Luxembourg Society of Psychology has been a member of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) since 2001.

Psy-Jeunes, a service of the Red Cross

The Psy-Jeunes service offered by the Luxembourg Red Cross provides psychological and psychotherapeutic support to young people aged 12 to 21.

Emotional and affective disorders, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, family problems, sexual abuse, behavioral disorders, or eating disorders… none of these symptoms or issues should go unaddressed.

By creating the Psy-Jeunes service, the Red Cross supports young people in distress and offers them psychological and psychotherapeutic support. The assistance is practical and compassionate, aimed at improving mental health and long-term well-being.

Requests should be made either by calling 2755 or by contacting the ONE – National Office for Children.

In case of emergency, the SOS Détresse services at 454545.lu can also be contacted. They focus on prevention, as do the associations and support groups listed here.

Audio-Phonological Service

The Audiological and Speech Therapy Service is part of the Luxembourg Ministry of Health. This service focuses on the prevention, screening, and management of hearing and speech disorders in both children and adults.

It is essential to detect hearing disorders in young children as early as possible. This allows for better treatment. So be attentive if your child shows signs of ear pain or does not react to sounds, even when sleeping in a quiet environment. Similarly, the sounds your child makes should develop in line with their age. Stay alert to this, and if in doubt, consult a professional!

In Luxembourg, the prevention of hearing and language disorders is a major priority. It is estimated that approximately 60,000 people in Luxembourg suffer from hearing disorders. For half of them, this condition is truly debilitating.

All consultations at the audiological and speech-language service are free of charge. Hearingscreenings are conducted at a very young age for newborns. Children are also screened in Luxembourg primary school classrooms during Cycle 1.2 (age 5) for hearing disorders and starting at age 2.5 for potential language disorders.

Subsequently, support is provided to children and adults with speech, language, and hearing disorders. Adults are also treated for all hearing disorders, including tinnitus.

Orthoptics Service

The orthoptics service, located in Luxembourg Hamm and Esch-sur-Alzette, is a state-run service responsible for vision screening for children aged 10 months to 4 years (up to Cycle 1.2 of the Luxembourg school system). People with vision disorders are also treated there. Services provided by the orthoptics department are free and optional.

Orthoptic consultations are not a substitute for consultations with an ophthalmologist. If a vision disorder is detected, the orthoptist will advise you to consult an ophthalmologist.

Addiction Treatment in Luxembourg

It was with this in mind that a safer drug consumption room, or “shooting gallery,” was established in Luxembourg on Route de Thionville in the Bonnevoie neighborhood. The center is accessible free of charge.

The goal of the Abrigado facility is to provide a clean and calm environment for adults struggling with addiction. This daytime drug consumption center is intended for individuals who are not currently undergoing substitution therapy. Sterile injection equipment is provided to minimize risks.

Practicing in Luxembourg as a Medical Professional

To practice in Luxembourg, medical professionals must possess the required qualifications. Recognition of the original degree is required by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

Additionally, the practitioner must have the language skills to practice in Luxembourg , including proficiency in the three official languages, and must be a citizen of a European country or be in compliance with immigration regulations.

More specifically, it is now necessary to have a master’s degree to practice as an osteopath in Luxembourg.

To practice in Luxembourg as a self-employed professional or an employee, a physical therapist must hold a state-issued diploma certifying their qualifications as a massage therapist and physical therapist.
