Luxembourg, a historic fortress city waiting to be discovered
The Bock and Pétrusse Casemates: a unique heritage site in Luxembourg
The Bock Rock is the historic birthplace of the city of Luxembourg. The earliest traces date back to the year 963 with the constructionof a fortified castle by Count Sigefroi. Over the centuries, the city developed around this rocky promontory under various rulers: Austrian, Spanish, French, Dutch, and Prussian, before gaining its independence with the creation of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Among the most remarkable elements of this heritage are the casemates, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first underground galleries were dug in 1644 under Spanish rule. These tunnels, carved into the rock, were used to shelter soldiers and horses.
Expanded several times, the casemates formed an impressive network of 23 km of tunnels reaching depths of up to 40 meters. They were equipped to withstand sieges, featuring underground kitchens, bakeries, and slaughterhouses.
Thanks to these exceptional fortifications, the city of Luxembourg was nicknamed the “Gibraltar of the North, ” protected by three fortified belts and 24 forts. Following Luxembourg’s independence in 1839, the fortress was gradually dismantled. The fortifications were demolished in 1867, making way for new developments, including the Municipal Garden.
Visiting the Luxembourg Casemates: a must-see experience
The Bock and Pétrusse Casemates are now the top tourist attraction in the City of Luxembourg, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The month of August alone sees nearly 30,000 visitors—more than 1,000 people per day.
Please note: the Casemates are closed from November to February.
- Access to the Pétrusse Casemates: meet at Place de la Constitution, under the Gelle-Fra
- Departure from the Bock Casemates: Montée de Clausen
- Extend your visit with a stroll along the Balcon du Luxembourg, following the Corniche, offering breathtaking views of the Grund and Neumünster Abbey. A walk particularly popular with couples, especially on February 14.
For a more immersive experience, you can explore the casemates in a unique and active way via the DKV Urban Trail. This one-of-a-kind route takes you on a roughly 1-kilometer journey through the darkness, deep within the tunnels, guided solely by the sound of drums. An experience that is both intense and unforgettable.
The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg: a symbol of power
The Grand Ducal Palace is an elegant Renaissance-style building located in Luxembourg’s Upper Town. It has served as the workplace of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg and their official residence in the city since 1890.
The palace has also housed the Chamber of Deputies since 1848, reinforcing its central role in the country’s political life.
The History of the Grand Ducal Palace
Originally, the site housedthe City Hall, which was destroyed in 1554 following a gunpowder explosion. Rebuilt in 1573, the building was subsequently bombarded in 1683 by the troops of Louis XIV.
Restored, it became the seat of the States and, during the French era, housed the Napoleonic administration. The “La Balance” building was added in 1741.
From 1815, the date of Luxembourg’s independence, several government institutions were housed there in succession. During his visits, King Grand Duke William II resided there, marking the gradual establishment of the Luxembourgish sovereign—now the Grand Duke—at the end of the 19th century.
During World War II, the Palace was occupied by the Nazis. Today, it is still occupied by the Grand Ducal Family, who appear on the balcony during major ceremonies and official events.
