Luxembourg, a historic fortress city

The history of the Bock and Petrusse Casemates

The Bock Rock is the birthplace of the city of Luxembourg. In 963, Count Sigefroi built a fortified castle on this rock. The casemates are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The first underground galleries, the casemates, were built in 1644 under Spanish rule. Enlarged twice, they measured 23 kilometers. This defense system extended over several floors and included galleries dug up to 40 meters deep. Carved into the rock, these tunnels sheltered soldiers and horses. The fortress was designed to withstand enemy attacks, thanks to its underground kitchens, bakeries, and slaughterhouses. Because of these impressive bastions, the city of Luxembourg was nicknamed the "Gibraltar of the North." The "Gibraltar of the North" was protected by three fortified belts and 24 forts.

FollowingLuxembourg's independence in 1839, the fortress was evacuated and dismantled. The fortifications were demolished in 1867. New developments such as the Municipal Garden were created.

Visit the Casemates of Luxembourg

You can visit the Bock Casemates and the Petrusse Casemates, which reopened in 2022 after seven years of renovation work and a beautiful new design.

In August alone, they welcome nearly 30,000 visitors, or more than 1,000 visitors per day. Please note the opening hours. The Casemates are closed from November to February.

Would you like to visit part of the Casemates in a rather unusual and sporty way? The DKV Urban Trail ends in style with a final run in the dark. You follow the galleries of the Casemates for almost 1 km within the Casemates, guided only by the sound of drums. Enchanting!

The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg

The Grand Ducal Palace is a Renaissance-style castle. It is located in the Upper Town of Luxembourg. The Palace has been the workplace and city residence of the Luxembourg Grand Ducal family since 1890. It has also been home to the Chamber of Deputies since 1848.

The history of the Grand Ducal Palace

Originally, the site was home to the Town Hall, which was destroyed following a powder explosion in the basement of the building in 1554. It was rebuilt in 1573. Louis XIV's troops bombarded it in 1683. Restored, the palace became the seat of the States and housed the Napoleonic administration during the French period. The "La Balance" building was added in 1741.

From 1815, the date of Luxembourg's independence, several government bodies succeeded one another there. During his visits to Luxembourg, King Grand Duke William II took up residence there. He thus marked the definitive establishment of the Luxembourg sovereign in Luxembourg at the end of the 19th century. During World War II, the Palace was occupied by the Nazis. Today , it is occupied by the Grand Ducal Family. They appear on the balcony during major public events or official ceremonies.

The Grand Ducal Palace is open to visitors from July to early September. Guidedtours are available in five languages. Tours are by appointment only, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through the LCTO. The Palace is guarded by a security service, which is an integral part of the tourist attraction.

Clervaux Castle

Clervaux Castle was originally a medieval castle built in several stages. Located on a rocky outcrop in the north of Luxembourg, it overlooks the houses of the village of Clervaux.

The Luxembourg government, which owns the site, completely renovated the building after it was destroyed during World War II. Clervaux Castle now houses three very interesting museums:

  • the Museum of the Battle of the Ardennes ( winter 1944/1945),
  • the Museum of Luxembourg Fortress Models
  • the fabulous collection of photographs "The Family of Man" by Edward Steichen.

Vianden Castle

Built from the 5th century onwards on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Our Valley, Vianden Castle took on its current form in the 11th century. It welcomes more than 200,000 visitors annually . Vianden Castle is one of the most visited sites in Luxembourg.

Located in the Luxembourg Ardennes, Vianden Castle is a majestic medieval castle-palace. It features numerous defensive systems (ramparts, drawbridge, portcullis, etc.). Following an application submitted to UNESCO in 2012, Vianden Castle is recognized as a "remarkable cultural element, deserving of conservation and protection."

The Nassau family acquired this residence from the Counts of Vianden through inheritance. It remained the property of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg until 1977. It was then transferred to the Luxembourg state, which undertook its restoration.

Every year in August, its medieval festival recreates the folkloric atmosphere of the period.

A suggestion: take a stroll through Vianden and, if you're not afraid of heights, take the chairlift.

Valley of the Seven Castles
