The Bonnevoie neighborhood is located in the southeast of Luxembourg City. Today, it is divided into two parts: Bonnevoie-Nord/Verlorenkost and Bonnevoie-Sud.

Often described as a "bobo" neighborhood, this formerly working-class area, just a stone's throw from the train station, is now popular with young couples and families, attracted by both its dynamism and its tranquility.

With 13,372 residents, Bonnevoie Sud is the most populous district in Luxembourg City. 66 .9% of its residents are foreign nationals. Portuguese nationals are the largest group, accounting for nearly 17% of the population. French nationals account for 15.3%.

The Bonnevoie-Nord/Verlorenkost area has 4,582 residents, 72.15% of whom are foreign nationals. The French community accounts for 18.6% of the population, while the Portuguese community accounts for 13.7%.

Although administratively the district is divided into two, Bonnevoie represents a single, coherent whole.

History of the Bonnevoie neighborhood

Historically, the northern part of Bonnevoie, or "Verlorenkost," was a fortified part of the city, which was partially destroyed in 1807 by a powder explosion.

The Bonnevoie neighborhood underwent significant development in the 20th century due to a sharp increase in population. Today, this part of the neighborhood remains a diverse area, with many social housing units. The Ulysse social center can cause inconvenience for families, with a population of drug addicts and marginalized individuals.

Bonnevoie was highlighted as part of the 2024 Urban History Festival.

However, appreciated for its proximity to the train station and the city center or upper town, Bonnevoie is becoming increasingly popular, especially among young couples and families.

Although it did not have the best reputation in the past, Bonnevoie is now considered a bohemian, diverse, and quiet residential neighborhood. Young families are attracted to its cosmopolitan, lively, and vibrant atmosphere. The neighborhood has become residential and very international.

The atmosphere is above all multicultural, reflecting Luxembourg society. With its pretty, colorful houses and pleasant little streets, this neighborhood has a decidedly British feel, which makes it a pleasant place to live. It also has a lot to offer culturally.

Recognizable by its Rotondes dating from the late 19th century and converted into a cultural center, the Bonnevoie neighborhood is increasingly sought after. Its quality of life and convenient location are its main assets. Access to the central station isnow facilitated by a footbridge spanning the Bonnevoie ring road.

The neighborhood has many shops and local services, as well as cafés and restaurants. Bonnevoie has a lively atmosphere that contrasts with other neighborhoods in the city.

A medium-sized Cactussupermarket is located in the heart of the neighborhood. This allows Bonnevoie residents to do their daily shopping, in addition to the many other shops in the neighborhood.

The neighborhood also hosts the Bouneweger Maart every Tuesday afternoon.

Transportation/buses in Bonnevoie

Bonnevoie also offers excellent public transportation connections. Several bus lines serve the entire Bonnevoie area with nearly 50 bus stops.

Vel'oh stations are available in the area to facilitate environmentally responsible mobility.

The neighborhood is served by the tramway with the Lycée Bouneweg stop.

The immediate proximity of Luxembourg Central Station is a real asset for travel. The "A vos côtés" association, which is present in the station district, has also been active in the area since 2021 to address the growing feeling of insecurity.

Bonnevoie hasnurseries for young children and a Luxembourg primary school. The Lycée Technique de Bonnevoie offers a wide range of vocational training courses and evening classes.

The cultural offering is very well developed. Bonnevoie is home to Les Rotondes, a lively and renowned cultural center for artistic creation in Luxembourg. Residents can therefore take advantage of this proximity to the establishment to attend meetings, shows, and high-quality plays.

The Trois-CL theater, the TOL, and the Kasematten Theater completethe cultural offerings, along with a music center.

With its excellent sports infrastructure and the presence of the Racing Football Club, the neighborhood offers a wide and diverse range of leisure activities. The Bonnevoie swimming pool, a soccer field, a gym, a sports hall, a tennis club, a pétanque court, playgrounds... Bonnevoie has everything you need for sports activities.

The Alzette Valley and the Kaltreis Water Tower Park also offer the opportunity for pleasant walks in a green setting. The Kaltreis Park offers a multitude of outdoor activities: chess tables, a skate park, pétanque, and more.

Don't miss the famous space-themed playground. The giant rocket will delight little astronauts. Balancing enthusiasts can test their skills on a tightrope and zip line. Water games provide a refreshing way to cool off in summer.

Bonnevoie is very popular with young families looking for a lively and vibrant area. It must be said that property prices are also lower than in the rest of the capital.

Bonnevoie is a neighborhood that is appreciated by its residents. Prices remain affordable compared to other neighborhoods. There is a good selection of houses built during the railway era.

Residents would like to see more community activities, places to socialize, and a more developed creative sector.
