The town of Walferdange is very pleasant. It has many amenities.

Nurseries and schools

There are three public schools with modern facilities in the municipality. They cover cycles 1, 2, and 3 in Béreldange and Helmsange, and cycles 1, 2, 3, and 4 in Walferdange. A school bus service is available to parents. Shuttle buses take children to school and bring them back after class. Please contact the municipality for more information.

The Charlemagne school in the municipality offers traditional French education for children up to the age of 12.

Two daycare centers located in Walferdange and Béreldange offer daycare services for children in the municipality.

The municipality also has several private nurseries, which are ideal if you are unable to obtain a place in the municipal facilities.

Transport in the municipality of Walferdange

The town of Walferdange is very well connected to Luxembourg City. Several bus lines crisscross the municipality.

The geographical location of the municipality of Walferdange between Luxembourg City and the road to the north of the country makes it a very busy route. Traffic problems are often encountered during rush hour in the direction of the capital.

Walferdange train station offers an attractive alternative to driving. The train journey to Luxembourg Central Station takes approximately 10 minutes.

A P+R car park located on Rue du Pont in Béreldange allows you to travel to the capital free of charge by public transport.

The municipality now offers the Vel'Oh! self-service bicycle service, as do the capital and six other municipalities bordering the city of Luxembourg.

An on-demand bus service, Flexibus, is available to residents. It will take you wherever you want to go in the municipality of Walferdange. Simply call 45 minutes in advance. The shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at your desired location.

Shops and businesses in the municipality of Walferdange

The municipality of Walferdange offers a wide variety of local shops and larger international chains.

There are home improvement stores, beauty and hair salons, bakeries and other food shops, garages and auto services, bookstores, and more. You can also visit the Raiffeisen bank branch in Walferdange or the AXA insurance agency in Béreldange.

The Walferdange Shopping Center is a great place to stock up on supplies.

Leisure and tourism in the municipality of Walferdange

Walferdange offers excellent facilities for leisure and sports, particularly soccer and tennis. Several clubs offer the opportunity to participate in other activities, including gymnastics.

The Alzette cycle path runs along the Alzette valley for 31 km and connects Béreldange to Ettelbruck.

The Prince Henri Cultural Center can accommodate up to 800 people.

Walferdange Castle is of historical interest. The Grand Ducal family stayed there in the 19th century. The University Campus was previously located there, but classes have not been held there since 2015. The building is now used by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.

The municipality of Walferdange is believed to date back to Celtic times. Gypsum mines dating back to the first settlers have been discovered in the Walferdange area. These are, of course, no longer in operation.

There are also Roman sites in the area. A Roman villa, consisting of around fifty different rooms, stretches over 100 meters at the foot of the Sonnebierg. Archaeological research has uncovered numerous coins and a purse dating from the 3rd century BC. Several types of pottery have also been found on the site, dating from the 4th to the 1st century BC.
The Raschpëtzer walking trail in the Helmsange forest offers visitors the chance to discover several Roman wells, dozens of meters deep. Learn more about the history of Luxembourg.

Helmsange is home to the Sonnebierg nature reserve. It is home to nearly 150 very rare plant species, including a dozen different species of orchids. It is of course forbidden to pick them.

Living in Walferdange, our opinion

Walferdange is a green and multicultural municipality in the immediate vicinity of Luxembourg City. Located in the Alzette Valley, the town of Walferdange is dominated by wooded hills. It is a very pleasant place for family walks, even if it gets steep quickly.

The area is ideal for families due to its proximity to the city and its rural character. The town is very pleasant.
