Neighbors' Day: Build Connections in Your Neighborhood

Have you just moved to Luxembourg or a new neighborhood? Are you looking for the perfect opportunity to meet your neighbors and get involved in your new community?

Neighbors’ Day, or “Nopeschfest” in Luxembourgish, is:

  • the perfect event to break the ice with your neighbors.
  • a chance tobuild warm connections with those who share your daily life.

The next official Nopeschfest will take place on the weekend of May 22, 2026.

This is also a good opportunity to remind you of:

  • a few rules of good neighborliness to help you live respectfully with your neighbors
  • to tell you about Hoplr, the app for neighbors.

Nopeschfest: an annual tradition full of conviviality

With the arrival of spring, there’s nothing like spending more time outdoors in the evenings to enjoy the nice weather. The good news ? Neighbors’ Day brings together thousands of neighbors every year across more than 40 municipalities in Luxembourg, coordinated by the Luxembourg Association for Local Solidarity (ALSP).

Whether you’re new to the neighborhood or a longtime resident, this festival is the perfect opportunity to share a friendly moment over a drink, a homemade pie, or culinary specialties from your country.

No formalities—just join the party and bring something to share!

Why participate in Neighbors’ Day or Nopeschfest?

The Neighbors’ Party is more than just an event. Nopeschfest is a unique opportunity for newcomers to a neighborhood. You can enjoy a friendly gathering there, regardless of your age or nationality. The Neighbors’ Party is the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors. It’s the perfect opportunity to:

  • discover a variety of dishes by sampling specialties from around the world,
  • learn about other cultures,
  • get to know your neighbors and build lasting friendships.

Held in the streets, building courtyards, or parks, the Nopeschfest allows residents to transform their neighborhood into a place of celebration and solidarity. Once the party is over, you’ll have the satisfaction of finally getting to know your neighbors . You’ll then be able to exchange much more than just a simple “Hello.”

Resources to help you organize your own Nopeschfest

Would you like to take the initiative and organize a party in your neighborhood? For this event centered on community spirit, local municipalities actively encourage neighbors to come together.

  • Contact your local municipality to access equipment such as tables, benches, or even beverages.
  • Promote the event by distributing invitations (available on the Nopeschfest.lu website) in mailboxes throughout your neighborhood.
  • Request local permits, particularly to temporarily close a street and allow children to play safely. The municipality will make all necessary arrangements to ensure participants have plenty of space. Children will be able to play without any risk and take over the street under the watchful eyes of all the neighbors.

Don’t forget to share your unforgettable moments on social media using the event’s hashtags! You can also like the Facebook page and share your photos there.

Follow the rules of good neighborliness to live in harmony

Beyond the festivities, neighborhood life is built on respectful and harmonious relationships. Here are some basic principles to ensure good neighborly relations every day.

Respect for quiet hours

Each municipality sets specific times during which excessive noise is prohibited. Generally , you should avoidmaking noise between 10 p.m . and 7 a.m. If you’re hosting a party or doing construction work, let your neighbors know in advance to avoid any misunderstandings. Stick to the specified noise limits, close your windows, and turn down the volume after a certain time.

If you make noise exceeding 30 decibels, you risk a visit from the Grand Ducal Police and a fine. You can find the Grand Ducal regulations here. Check with your local municipality for details on the local ordinance.

Gardening Work During Certain Hours

Gardening work is permitted only during certain time slots defined by the municipalities. Noisy equipment such as lawn mowers is generally permitted:

  • Weekdays: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • On Saturdays: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sundays and holidays: time slots are often restricted or prohibited.

Check with your local municipality for specific rules.

Pets and Good Neighbor Rules

Pets are full-fledged members of the family. However, out of respect for everyone, please be considerate of your neighbors and public spaces.

  • Pick up after your pets. To do so, use the dog waste bags provided by the municipality.
  • Respect private and public spaces, especially playgrounds and gardens.

Green spaces are not restrooms for dogs... Children from the neighborhood often come to play there. So think of them and avoid leaving your pet’s waste lying around.

Train your dog. Even if your neighbors’ gardens aren’t fenced in, they are private property. Municipalities also prohibit dogs from entering playgrounds, flower beds, and similar areas...

Similarly, if your neighbors’ cat wanders into your yard, avoid feeding it. Cats are independent animals. Imagine how disappointed your neighbors and their children will be if their cat spends its days at your house because you’re feeding it.

Cleanliness of private and public spaces

Your environment is shared. Even if you’re at home, it’s unpleasant to walk past trash or objects lying around. Get rid of your bulky items and clean up in front of your home to help create a pleasant environment.

Additionally, under winter regulations, you are not allowed to leave your car engine running to warm up the interior or defrost your windshield—not even right outside your door! You must also clear snow from the sidewalks and de-ice them in case of freezing.

Dispose of your trash in the designated bins and other waste receptacles. A cigarette butt takes several months to decompose, and chewing gum takes several years.

Managing Neighborhood Conflicts

Disagreements can arise, but calm and respectful dialogue often resolves tensions. If you have a conflict with your neighbor, try talking it out with them first. Often, simply explaining the situation and communicating with kindness is enough to prevent conflicts from escalating. Is that not possible, and have you already tried?

If necessary, call in a mediator. To do so, contact your local municipality. As a last resort, you can file a complaint with the Grand Ducal Police in cases of serious or repeated disturbances.

Hoplr, the app for neighbors

70% of Luxembourg’s population is of foreign origin. The secure Hoplr platform, available as a mobile app, connects neighbors by highlighting local life.

Completely free, it allows neighbors (in a neighborhood or village) to connect regarding donations of items, service exchanges, event planning, or simply sharing practical information.

Available in multiple languages, it offers easy access to local life, even for newcomers.

Build a supportive community

Whether it’s Nopeschfest or the Hoplr app, these initiatives are an invitation to build a warm and supportive community where everyone feels welcome.

So:

  • mark your calendar to share a good time with your neighbors and contact your local municipality to participate in or organize a party with your neighbors
  • download the app and/or sign up at hoplr.lu.
