Open-air cinema is one of the summer’s major cultural events in Luxembourg. From July through September, films are screened under the stars in the squares of Luxembourg City, in parks, in Kirchberg, in Esch-sur-Alzette, and in several municipalities across the country.
Several events have been confirmed for the summer of 2026: the Cinémathèque’s City Open Air Cinema, the traveling Sunset Cinema, and special evenings organized at lux-Airport. Most screenings are free and begin after sunset, generally between 8:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m., depending on the time of year.
These evenings are aimed at movie lovers, families, couples, groups of friends, expats, and anyone looking for a unique summer outing. Cult films, comedies, timeless classics, animated films, and family-friendly productions ensure there’s something for everyone.
The City Open Air Cinema is organized by the City of Luxembourg Film Archive. In 2026, the event will celebrate its 40th anniversary and offer two series of free screenings in two neighborhoods of the capital.
The first series will take place from Thursday, July 23, to Tuesday, July 28, 2026, on Place Guillaume II—also known as Knuedler—in the heart of Luxembourg’s Upper Town.
Screenings will begin around 9:30 p.m., after sunset. The lineup features classic films, cult favorites, comedies, and film-concert events.

The Cinémathèque will then set up its screen on Place Léon XIII in Bonnevoie from Thursday, August 6, through Saturday, August 8, 2026. Screenings will begin around 9:15 p.m.
The announced lineup includes *La Boum* on August 6 and *Lola Runs* on August 7. This stop allows visitors to extend their open-air cinema experience in a neighborhood atmosphere that’s more intimate than that of Place Guillaume II.
Sunset Cinema is a free open-air cinema concept launched in Luxembourg in 2021. The event features popular films, classics, and animated films in unique outdoor venues.
Each evening combines the main screening with entertainment, concerts, food and beverage options, and the screening of a Luxembourgish short film in partnership with the Film Fund Luxembourg.
From July 29 to August 16, 2026, Sunset Cinema will take place at Kirchberg Central Park.
Doors typically open about two hours before the film to allow visitors to enjoy the entertainment, music, and food and drink options. Screenings begin after sunset, around 9:30 p.m. in July and around 9:00 p.m. in August.
Admission is free. Deck chairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but they cannot be reserved. Audience members may also bring a blanket or a camping chair.
The Sunset Cinema in Esch-sur-Alzette will take place from August 19 to 24, 2026, in the rose garden of Gaalgebierg Park.
This lush, green setting, located near the Esch-sur-Alzette train station, hosts several evenings of free screenings under the stars. Each evening is usually themed or geared toward a specific audience.
