Darkness into Light, suicide prevention

Hall Omnisports Luxembourg Clausen
Health – Wellness

Join the Together for Hope Luxembourg community (formerly Darkness Into Light) for the 2027 event and support suicide prevention and mental health awareness. This charity event, launched in Ireland in 2009 by the Pieta House organization, aims to raise public awareness of mental health challenges.

A symbolic journey from darkness to light

The concept behind Together for Hope Luxembourg is deeply symbolic. This solidarity walk begins before dawn and guides participants along a path marked by messages of hope, from darkness toward the light of day.

At each edition of this solidarity event, several hundred people gather in the middle of the night at the Clausen Omnisports Hall to share this walk toward the light, representing the transition from the darkness of mental distress to hope and healing.

After an inspiring, hopeful, and deeply moving speech by the organizing team, participants set off at 5 a.m. and walk together through the city of Luxembourg.

And as they make their way, the walkers discover candles and messages of hope to guide them. The highlight is the arrival on the Corniche in the heart of Luxembourg City. This moment is particularly magical as the sunrise begins to illuminate the city and the path! Upon their return, participants are welcomed with coffee and treats to celebrate hope and solidarity with those who suffer in silence.

Each year, more than 600 people walk through the city of Luxembourg. Their participation raises awareness about the reality of suicide and offers support to those who are suffering. Over 25,000 euros have been raised during previous editions.

In Luxembourg, Darkness Into Light was first organized in 2019 with the support of the Irish Embassy in Luxembourg. The event has since been renamed “Together For Hope.”

The date for the 10th edition of Together For Hope has not yet been announced. We will be sure to keep you informed. It is expected to take place in early May 2027.

A global movement for mental health

Darkness Into Light is much more than a local event. Each year, more than 200,000 people participate in this synchronized walk across more than 200 cities and 20 countries. Founded in Ireland in 2009 by the Pieta House organization, this global movement brings together strangers from around the world.

Whether directly or indirectly affected by suicide and mental distress, walkers join a community of support and hope. Whether grieving the loss of a loved one who saw suicide as the end of their problems, or simply raising awareness for this cause, the walkers of Darkness Into Light—and now Together For Hope—come together to restore hope to those who are enduring their pain in deep darkness.

The funds raised during the Darkness Into Light walks are essential for funding suicide prevention and mental health support services. Each year, the event helps fund some 100,000 distress calls and messages, 50,000 hours of counseling, and nearly 7,000 unique treatment pathways.

The Reality of Suicide in Luxembourg

Suicide remains a major concern in Luxembourg.

According to the latest SOS Détresse report for 2025, the helpline received over 4,000 calls, a 16% increase from the previous year. Calls from people in a suicidal crisis, meanwhile, rose by 56%. People in their 50s are the most affected. They account for nearly one-third of callers, followed by those in their 30s (27% of callers).

Initiatives like Together For Hope are therefore crucial for breaking the taboos surrounding mental health and encouraging those who are suffering to seek help.

Supporting local suicide prevention organizations

Together For Hope is organized in Luxembourg by a dedicated team. The event is held under the High Patronage of Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess and helps people suffering from psychological distress with the support of the Irish Embassy.

Proceeds from Together For Hope Luxembourg are donated to local organizations dedicated to suicide prevention and psychological support: SOS Détresse - Mir hëllefen iwwer Telefon an online asbl, the Mental Health League, and Kanner-Jugendtelefon.

These organizations provide essential services to support people in distress. Helplines, counseling, and educational programs raise public awareness of the warning signs of suicide.

How to Participate or Support Together For Hope

This year, no prior registration or registration fees will be required to participate in the Together For Hope walk. However, every donation is welcome.

If you are unable to participate in the walk, you can also support the event by making a donation or volunteering. Every contribution, whether financial or in the form of time, is invaluable in supporting this vital cause.

Resources for people in distress

If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time, please don’t hesitate to contact the resources available in Luxembourg:

  • SOS Détresse offers a listening ear and confidential support for those in need.
  • Kanner-Jugendtelefon (KJT) operates a helpline dedicated to young people and parents, offering support and advice.
  • d'Ligue: offers various mental health support services for all ages.

Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, and many people are ready to support you on your journey toward well-being.

Together, let’s walk toward a brighter future

Participating in Together For Hope is a concrete way to show your support for those in distress and to help raise awareness about mental health issues. By walking together, we affirm that, even in the darkest moments, there is always a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
