Luxembourg celebrates Mammendag in June. This year, Mammendag will take place on June 9, 2024.

The origins of Mother's Day

The origins of Mother's Day go back to Roman times in the 5th century BC. The Romans paid tribute to women in general, and to mothers in particular, on June 11, the feast of Matraliae. The goddess Mater Matuta, goddess of dawn and childbirth, was celebrated.

Mothering Sunday originated in England in the 16th century. Servants were given a day off to spend with their families.

The first Mother's Day was created in France at the beginning of the 20th century, to celebrate the merits of mothers. General Pétain instituted the holiday on the last Sunday in May, or the first Sunday in June if it coincided with Pentecost Sunday.
