Father's Day tradition in Luxembourg
Dads are celebrating in Luxembourg with Pappendag or Father's Day.
In Luxembourg, Father's Day is traditionally celebrated on the 1st Sunday in October. It's an opportunity for children to spoil their dad. Younger children will give him a present, made at school with their "Joffer".
Moms are also entitled to a gift made at school. Moms are celebrated in Luxembourg in June.
Origins of Father's Day
Father's Day was originally a Christian holiday celebrated in Europe. It can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when fathers were celebrated on March 19. This day corresponds to Saint Joseph's Day, who was the adoptive father of the infant Jesus.
Father's Day is traditionally celebrated around the world on the third Sunday in June. This is particularly the case in France, where Father's Day was instituted by a lighter manufacturer in the 1950s as a selling point.
Belgium celebrates fathers on the second Sunday in June. Germany celebrates fathers forty days after Easter, on Ascension Thursday .
Gift ideas for Dads at Pappendag
It's well known that dads have a sweet tooth! So treat your Dad to chocolates, cakes and other sweet treats with Luxembourg specialities. Now might even be a good time to treat him to a tasting in one of Luxembourg's wine cellars.
Is he more sporty? Think of introducing him to Luxembourg through races, trails and other sporting events. It's the perfect opportunity to offer him a gym membership, entry to the Stade de Luxembourg or a bib for the next race?
Is he stylish? Give him a pretty sweater or a gift from one of the countless boutiques in the malls.
Does he like to go out and have fun? Check out our outings and leisure pages for more ideas. Theaters, cinemas, concerts - you're sure to find something for the whole family.
