Public holidays and statutory leave: tips for maximizing your vacation time
Employees in Luxembourg are entitled to 26 days of paid leave per year. In 2026, you can enjoy several long weekends by strategically taking a few days off.
It is also important to note that in Luxembourg, public holidays that fall on a Sunday give employees an exceptional compensatory day off. For example, in 2024, May 9, Europe Day, was also Ascension Day. As compensation, employees were able to take an additional day off within the following three months. Unfortunately, 2025 and 2026 do not offer such compensation.
However, by strategically scheduling your days off if you do not work on Saturdays or Sundays, you can still enjoy a few extra days to treat yourself to one or two long weekends. We provide our recommendations below.

- Thursday, January 1, 2026: New Year's Day
Taking Friday, January 2 off will give you a 4-day break to start the new year off right. - April 5 and 6: Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Enjoy a long weekend to soak up the Easter traditions.
- Friday , May 1: Labor Day.
- Saturday, May 9: Europe Day
- Thursday, May 14: Ascension Day (see pilgrimage to Our Lady of Fatima)
Consider taking Friday, May 15 off to enjoy a four-day spring weekend. - Monday, May 25: Whit Monday. If you take Tuesday, May 26 off, you can attend the pilgrimage and the famous dancing procession in Echternach.
- Tuesday, June 23: Luxembourg National Day. Consider taking Monday, June 22 off and enjoy a four-day weekend!
- Saturday, August 15: Assumption Day. This public holiday should give you an extra day off, as should All Saints' Day and Saint Stephen's Day.
- Sunday, November 1: All Saints' Day

- Saturday, December 26, 2026: Saint Stephen's Day.

For Luxembourg schools and high schools, the 2025-2026 school year will run from Monday, September 15, 2025, to Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
- The All Saints' Day holidays will begin on Saturday , November 1 and end on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
- There will be no classes on December 6, St. Nicholas Day, for children in the primary school system.
- The Christmas break will begin on Saturday , December20 , 2025, and end on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
- The winter or Carnival holidays will begin on Saturday, February 14 and end on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Before that, children will have the joy of making pretty lanterns for Liichtsmessdag.
- The spring or Easter holidays will begin on Saturday, March 28, 2026, and will last until Sunday, April 12.
- The Pentecost holidays will begin on Saturday, May 23, 2026, and end on Sunday, May 31.
- Children will start their summer vacation on Thursday, July 16, 2026. They will return to school on Monday, September 14, 2026.
