Welcome to Luxembourg! As a new expatriate, one of your first priorities will be to familiarize yourself with Luxembourg's telecommunications and stay connected.

Not sure which operator(s) to choose for your telephone, internet and TV services? Here's some information to help you choose the right provider for your fixed and mobile telephony, TV and Internet services in Luxembourg.

Mobile telephony in Luxembourg

Mobile telephony in Luxembourg is reliable and offers extensive coverage, even in northern Luxembourg.

Mobile operators in Luxembourg

There are 5 cell phone operators in Luxembourg. Each offers several packages tailored to users' needs, with more or less extensive and more or less powerful offerings.

We offer packages to suit all needs and budgets. Don't forget to check out our exclusive offers for expatriates, to maximize your connection capacity at attractive rates.

Cell phone offers can be combined with fixed telephony, unlimited Internet and TV services, or more basic services for limited use.

There are several telecommunications and cell phone operators in Luxembourg:

  • Eltrona: Eltrona is a pioneer in Luxembourg cable networks. It owns its own network, which means that its customers are not dependent on Post's delays for the installation of its services. Eltrona offers a wide range of cell phone, Internet and TV services,
  • Post: Post is one of Luxembourg's largest employers. It offers a wide range of services in its branches: postal services (mail and parcels), fixed and mobile telephone packages, internet, TV and banking services,
  • Tango: Part of the Belgian Proximus group, Tango offers a number of packages, with or without mobiles,
  • Orange: A newcomer to the Luxembourg market, Orange is one of France's leading telephony operators. Several packages are available,
  • Luxembourg Online is a 100% Luxembourg-based telephony company, in existence for over 25 years. It is the oldest player in the telephony market. You can find it on

Whichever operator you choose, all you have to do is visit a representative branch to take out a mobile offer and acquire a new cell phone. All you need is proof of identity, proof of address and a bank statement.

Cell phone packages in Luxembourg

By comparing the various offers, you're bound to find the package that's right for you. You'll be able to take advantage of tailor-made offers and attractive terms, whatever your communication needs.

Depending on your needs, you can opt for a package with unlimited calls for 10 euros a month, plus a few GB of data. On the other hand, for a complete experience of unlimited telephony and browsing, you'll pay 60 euros a month.

It's worth noting that roaming charges were abolished in 2017. As a result, bills have lightened, especially for travelers beyond Luxembourg's borders. Calls received abroad or made from abroad on your Luxembourg mobile are no longer charged extra in Europe.

Should you opt for 4G or 5G in Luxembourg?

5G is revolutionizing the mobile telephony landscape in Luxembourg. Download speeds are multiplied by a factor of 20, and latency times are considerably reduced. There's no doubt that 5G means more efficient use of your smartphone and a more complete user experience.

However, some operators are further ahead than others when it comes to 5G. So should you opt for 5G or not?

It's worth noting that the maximum speed reached today is only 1 Gbits/second. Not all operators achieve this.

What's more, the territory is not equal when it comes to 5G deployment. Of course, the capital Luxembourg currently benefits from the best deployment. If you live and/or work in Luxembourg, 5G could be very interesting for you. Likewise, if you live and/or work in the south of the country, particularly near Esch-sur-Alzette.

On the other hand, 5G coverage is more uncertain in the rest of the country, particularly in the north. Even 4G is sometimes difficult to obtain.

Nevertheless, you should be able to surf the web with complete peace of mind, and in particular follow all the media on your mobile or desktop.

Disappearance of fixed-line telephony in the Grand Duchy

The traditional fixed-line telephone will disappear by 2024. All analog telephone lines are gradually migrating to IP telephony over the Internet.

While this change will not affect bills, it may have an impact on certain third-party services , such as alarm systems or telephone connections allowing the use of multiple telephone numbers.

Residents concerned should contact their service provider to check that their installation is compatible and make any necessary modifications.

Internet connection, broadband access and wifi at home

Luxembourg stands out for its top-notch Internet performance. With a high-end infrastructure, internet providers guarantee a fast, reliable connection. Whether you're working from home, streaming video or taking part in video conferences, fiber optics and broadband connections ensure a smooth online experience.

Today, many companies are promoting teleworking in Luxembourg.

Telecom networks for Internet connections

Subscribing to the right telecom network is essential when expatriating. Having access to high-performance telecoms means you can continue to communicate with family and friends back home. This helps reduce the loss of bearings associated with expatriation. Isolation is often a problem for expatriates.

That's why it's so important to keep in touch with family and friends, as we've all found out in confined spaces.

To ensure a smooth flow of your Internet, especially when several people in the family are connected, we advise you to opt for fiber optics if possible. Although fiber optics are becoming more widespread in Luxembourg, they are not yet operational everywhere. You can check with the operators.

Internet operators in Luxembourg

The main Internet operators in Luxembourg guarantee high-speed Internet access via ADSL. These include Eltrona, Post, Tango, Orange and Luxembourg Online.

They'll offer to install the modem, as well as Wi-Fi, so you can enjoy wireless Internet throughout your home. The speeds on offer generally go up to 1,000 Mb/s download speed, making it easy to use the Internet for streaming or video calls.

An Internet subscription costs around 60 euros a month in Luxembourg.

Internet connections

When you arrive in Luxembourg, it's not uncommon to have to wait a few days, or even weeks, to get a suitable telephone and internet connection that meets your needs.

Post is the main telecom operator, managing the lines and networks in the territory, excluding the Eltrona network, which has its own infrastructure. Post must therefore intervene beforehand to open the line if you choose a different operator. Appointments can take up to a month.
Appointments with Post are made directly by the chosen supplier. You don't have to do a thing. Once the installation has been completed by Post, the operator can intervene.

Tip: Whichever operator you choose, make your connection request as soon as possible, because it takes time!

Fiber optics for a better telecom experience

Why choose fiber optics in Luxembourg?

When it comes to telecommunications, fiber optics are becoming increasingly widespread in Luxembourg. Communes are increasingly equipped with fiber optic networks.

Communicating easily with friends and family via all types of media, surfing the web, playing games or listening to streaming music is up to 10 times faster with optical fiber than with standard ADSL. What's more, download volumes are virtually unlimited.

The connection to digital applications such as Skype for communicating with friends and family, or streaming access to films and music, is perfect.

In addition, the ever-increasing quality of video games, in terms of the graphics and technical complexity they offer, and the possibility of playing online, are important factors in the move to fiber optics.
As for teleworking, it virtually requires a fiber optic connection.

Cost of fibre optics in Luxembourg

As far as prices are concerned, fiber optics have become very affordable if we refer to the level of comfort they offer.

On the other hand, the costs of fiber optic installation are not always clear-cut on service providers' offers. The bill may be higher if your building or home is not connected. Check with your building's association or the previous occupant of your home. Find out in advance whether your telecom installation is eligible and under what conditions the installation can be carried out. And switch to fiber for faster, higher-quality connections.

Television in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, a variety of international and local channels are available, accessible via the Internet or satellite installation. Service providers such as POST Luxembourg TV offer packages to suit all tastes, from series and films to sports and documentaries. Opt for multilingual packages for an immersive experience, reflecting Luxembourg's cultural diversity.

You can also opt for IPTV (Internet TV). However, you'll need fiber optics to take advantage of this service.

The IPTV service is an alternative to cable or satellite offerings. Internet +TV packages cost around 70/80 euros per month in Luxembourg. Decoder rental and installation may generate additional costs. Find out more in advance. You should also check the number of channels on offer (usually around a hundred) and whether you can record programs.

If you don't want to opt for Internet TV, you can always install a satellite dish. You'll be able to receive all programs, including those from your home country.

Free WIFI in Luxembourg cities

Surf at high speed and low cost with the free wifi networks flourishing in Luxembourg's cities: Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Strassen, Dudelange and others.

Wifi networks are now available in several cities across the country. Don't hesitate to connect to wifi networks such as hotcity, citywifi, cityluxfree,... You'll be able to access the Internet free of charge in most major hotspots, without a password, for a limited time or without a maximum, thanks to a premium connection at a reduced rate. An initiative that has already made life easier for thousands of users in Luxembourg! The speed may be low, but it can help out when you need it.

Although Luxembourg City appears to be well-equipped in terms of its Internet network, the large number of people using it reduces its performance. Larger cities in the south, such as Differdange, Dudelange and Esch-sur-Alzette, offer better connections. Ettelbruck in the north also ranks well.

Parcel delivery in Luxembourg and abroad

Delivering parcels from abroad is not always easy in Luxembourg. Indeed, the Grand Duchy is not very well served by Internet vendors, unless the supplier is already working in Belgium.

Think of Post's PackUp Import service. In addition, it allows you to collect your parcels in reserved, secure areas with free access 24/7. Post also offers parcel drop-off at your home, in a pre-arranged location.

Thanks to Post, you can also send your parcels anywhere in Luxembourg and abroad.

Or consider the Mondial Relay network, which is becoming increasingly popular in Luxembourg, or a concierge service.
