Parking lots, parking meters, residential parking

It is relatively easy to park in Luxembourg on the street or in parking lots. However, in most cases, you will have to pay for parking. There are several ways to arrange and pay for parking.

Parking in car parks in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, parking garages generally charge between €1 and €3 per hour. Rates are displayed at the entrance or on each parking garage's website.

Once you have parked your vehicle, you can stay as long as you like. You pay when you leave, based on the actual length of time you have parked. Remember to keep your ticket with you. You will need it to re-enter the car park via the pedestrian entrance, pay for your parking, and retrieve your car.

Some car parks, such as the Parking du Fort Neipperg in Luxembourg, allow you to pay for parking via the "Indigo Neo" mobile app, which recognizes your vehicle's license plate. The entire process is completely contactless. See below on this page.

More and more car parks are also recognizing your license plate. All you have to do is pay at the machine at the pedestrian entrance to the car park using the ticket issued at the entrance. The barrier will then open automatically to let your vehicle out.

It is also possible to pay directly at the entrance and exit by presenting your bank card at the vehicle entrance machine. You just need to use the same card when you exit.

Parking in Luxembourg City

To park in Luxembourg, you can use the various car parks in the capital. However,be aware of parking problems, especially at lunchtime or during major events. Car parks are often full at these times. You will need to be patient at the vehicle entrance to get a space. You can also use public transport, which is free in Luxembourg.

For a more economical solution, you can park in the free car parks on the outskirts of Luxembourg City.

Remember that public transport is free in Luxembourg. This is the best option , especially if you work in the city. P+R car parks have excellent connections to buses and trams, especially during rush hour. They encourage motorists to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead.

Known as P+R (Park & Ride) car parks, these facilities are ideal for reaching the city center by tram or bus, or even by bike for an even greener travel option.

P+R car parks on the outskirts of Luxembourg City

Located on the outskirts of Luxembourg City, P+R car parks are free for 24 hours. After the 25th hour of parking, the rate is €10 per day or part thereof. They can be found at the following locations:

Another P+R, called P+R West, will be built halfway between Strassen and Bertrange. It will offer a direct connection to the tramway.

Parking validation in Luxembourg

Some parking spaces on public roads are free and unlimited. Some spaces may also be free for a limited time with a parking disc. Residents can benefit from a special rate and a certain number of free hours.

However, other spaces are paid and must be validated by payment to avoid being fined for parking your vehicle on the street.

Parking rates on public roads in Luxembourg

Parking on the streets of Luxembourg is subject to a charge from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and even on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is free on Sundays and public holidays.

Parking is organized into different colored zones. Each zone has a maximum parking time and specific hourly rates.

Paying parking fees by mobile phone

To pay for your parking, you can either pay in cash (always carry change with you) by taking a ticket from the parking meter, or pay via an app: Indigo Neo

Indigo Neo is a parking payment system set up by the City of Luxembourg. It allows you to purchase your parking remotely using a mobile phone by entering your license plate number. Payment is made by simply clicking on the area where your vehicle is parked. The amount payable will then be deducted directly from your bank account.

To use the Indigo Neo system, you must first download the app. Registration is free. More information about the IndigoNeo app is available on the vdl website.

Residential parking permit in Luxembourg

If you are a resident of Luxembourg City, you can benefit from a residential parking permit.

Stickers reserved for residents of Luxembourg City

The parking permit is reserved for residents of the Luxembourg capital. It allows them to park for free and without time restrictions in their neighborhood of residence.

Applications for resident permits must be accompanied by a certificate of residence from the City of Luxembourg and a vehicle registration certificate in the applicant's name.
Residential parking permits in Luxembourg City are issued per person and per vehicle.

The number of parking stickers per person is now limited to a maximum of three. The first sticker is free of charge, while subsequent stickers are subject to a progressive fee. It is prohibited to register multiple vehicles on a single sticker.

How the residential parking permit works

With the resident permit, you are also entitled to 2 hours of free parking throughout the city of Luxembourg. To do so, you must place the white parking disc issued at the same time as the resident parking permit behind your windshield. Please note that the maximum parking time may vary depending on the neighborhood. In this case, don't forget to note your estimated departure time!

Resident parking stickers must be placed behind the windshield of your vehicle. They must be visible from outside the vehicle. There are three different types of parking stickers: annual stickers, temporary stickers (valid for 20 days), and visitor stickers (valid for 3 months at a cost of €16).

Professional parking sticker

Certain professional activities, such as medical professions, home help, and repair services, are entitled to parking in the City of Luxembourg. Applications must be made to the administrative services.

Parking permits for other municipalities

Other municipalities in Luxembourg offer residential parking permits in specific regulated areas within their territory.

This is the case in Esch-sur-Alzette, Pétange, Hespérange, Differdange, Strassen, Bettembourg, and other towns. These municipalities offer residential parking permits to residents of the municipality. This allows them to park for free in certain neighborhoods.

Please contact your local municipal administration for more information.

If your car is registered abroad, you can obtain a temporary sticker valid for six months.

EU parking disc in blue zones

Certain areas allow limited-time parking with a blue disc, as provided for in the European Union Highway Code.
Blue zones are identified by blue signs with a white P and a parking disc symbol.

The authorized parking time is generally 1.5 hours with the blue disc. This must be displayed prominently behind the windshield. You must indicate your arrival time at the parking space. You can purchase these blue discs at gas stations.

Don't forget! To drive in Luxembourg, you must have all the necessary paperwork for your vehicle and comply with the rules of the road.

To diversify your means of transportation throughout the city, in addition to parking facilities, you can opt for a taxi service in Luxembourg, which offers a convenient and comfortable alternative.

Parking with electric charging stations

Luxembourg is now very well equipped with electric charging stations thanks to its Chargy network, which is accessible to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
