However, since demand is very high on this day, it is more essential than ever to book your restaurant for the evening of February 14. Stop at a small, traditional restaurant along the way to round out the experience.

The Origins of Valentine’s Day

The traditions associated with Valentine’s Day date back to ancient times. In ancient Romantraditions , people celebrated Lupercus, the god of fertility, on February 13, 14, and 15. During these celebrations, men chased women wearing goatskins to ensure their fertility...

A second version attributes the origin of Valentine’s Day to the story of Valentine of Terni. This priest served in Rome. He was beheaded on February 14, 269, for marrying Christian couples. This was indeed forbidden by the Emperor, who wanted to force men to go to war.

Great Britain began celebrating lovers starting in the 14th century. Indeed, people believed that birds mated on February 14. The poet Otho de Grandson launched the Valentine’s Day tradition by sending sweet messages to his beloved on that day. The tradition was later adopted at the French court, before spreading to the rest of the world and to Luxembourg.

In Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Horticultural Federation actually parades to Luxembourg City Hall to present bouquets of flowers to each member of the College of Aldermen.

To show your loved one how much you care, add a Luxembourgish touch. Give a pretzel on Bretzelsonndeg, another local romantic tradition that takes place in the spring. It’s a simple yet sincere gesture to show your affection. Happy Valentine’s Day in Luxembourg!
