Public Holidays and Paid Time Off: Tips for Maximizing Your Vacation
Employees in Luxembourg are entitled to 26 days of paid vacation per year. In 2026, you can enjoy several long weekends by strategically taking a few days off.
It’s also important to know that in Luxembourg, public holidays that fall on a Sunday result in an exceptional compensatory day off for employees. For example, in 2024, May 9 (Europe Day) also fell on Ascension Day. As compensation, employees had the option to take an additional day off within the following three months. Unfortunately, 2025 and 2026 do not offer such compensations.
However, by strategically scheduling your days off—if you don’t work on Saturdays or Sundays—you can still enjoy a few extra days to treat yourself to one or two long weekends. We’ve listed our top tips below.

Work holidays and legal public holidays in 2026
Luxembourg is a country that knows how to keep its traditions alive. Public holidays often stem from the country’s Catholic religious tradition.
- Thursday, January 1, 2026: New Year’s Day
Taking Friday, January 2 off will give you a 4-day break to start the new year off right. - April 5 and 6: Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Enjoy a long weekend to immerse yourself in Easter traditions.
- Friday , May 1: Labor Day.
- Saturday, May 9: Europe Day
- Thursday, May 14: Ascension Day (see the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Fatima)
Also consider taking Friday, May 15 off to enjoy a 4-day spring long weekend. - Monday, May 25: Pentecost Monday. If you take Tuesday, May 26 off, you can attend the pilgrimage and the famous dancing procession in Echternach.
- Tuesday, June 23: Luxembourg National Day. Consider taking Monday, June 22 off and enjoy a 4-day weekend!
- Saturday, August 15: Assumption Day. This holiday should result in an extra day off, as should All Saints’ Day and Saint Stephen’s Day.
- Sunday, November 1: All Saints’ Day
- Friday, December 25: Christmas Day (see Christmas Markets)
- Saturday, December 26, 2026: Saint Stephen’s Day.
Holidays and customary days off in Luxembourg
With traditions still very much alive in Luxembourg, certain local or customary holidays are still celebrated.
However, employers are not required to grant these days off to their staff. Employers remain free to decide whether or not employees are excused from work on these days.
