Connecting to the electricity grid in Luxembourg

When you move into your new home, the previous owner or tenant will probably not have disconnected the electricity supply. The simplest solution is to take over the existing contracts. You can also choose a different electricity supplier.

Choosing your electricity supplier in Luxembourg

What do you need to know about electricity suppliers?

There can be significant price differences between electricity suppliers in Luxembourg. As with gas, it is in your interest to compare offers in order to save money on your electricity bill.

Suppliers offer different types of electricity deals, depending on the energy source used. Luxembourg is increasingly favoring energy sources with a more neutral carbon footprint.

Electricity supply in apartment buildings

If you live in an apartment building, the property manager or your landlord manages the electricity supply and service provider for all the apartments. This means you may not be able to choose your service provider. Your consumption will either be deducted from the building's service charges or billed directly via a meter installed in your apartment. Ask about this when you visit apartments.

Electricity supply in individual homes

If you live in an individual dwelling, you are free to choose your electricity service provider. You can keep the same subscription as your predecessor to make moving into your new home easier.

Once you have settled in, however, we recommend that you compare electricity offers and possibly change providers if you find a cheaper one.

Compare electricity costs based on your consumption

On the ilr.lu website, the Luxembourg RegulatoryInstitute answers all your questions about your electricity subscription. You can also compare offers from different electricity providers to choose the one that suits you best.

With the Calculix price comparison tool, you can simulate your electricity consumption based on the composition of your household and the size of your home.

Electricity consumption and prices in Luxembourg

The electricity consumed in Luxembourg comes from Europe. Luxembourg sources most of its electricity from Germany (70%) and France (23%).

Luxembourg is a pioneer in Europe in terms of renewable energy use. Sixty-five percent of the electricity supplied to households and businesses comes from renewable energy sources, compared to 35% for Europe as a whole. Twenty-seven percent comes from fossil fuels, compared to 40% in Europe. Only 7% of the electricity supplied comes from nuclear sources, compared to 35% for the rest of Europe.

Electricity prices jumped 10% in Luxembourg in 2021 and 2022. In order to curb inflation in electricity prices, the government has frozen prices until the end of 2024.

The end of this cap is expected to have a significant impact on the bills of Luxembourg residents. Statec, the Luxembourg research organization, is already anticipating a 17% increase in gas prices and a 60% increase in electricity prices! However, the government is considering covering half of this increase in order to reduce the impact on consumers.

Gas subscription and connection in Luxembourg

Find your gas supplier in Luxembourg

There are few gas suppliers in Luxembourg. With limited competition, prices are skyrocketing. There are significant differences between the various suppliers. It may therefore be worthwhile to compare offers and switch to a more economical provider if you notice significant differences.

Gas supply in apartment buildings in Luxembourg

If you are moving into a new apartment building, the property manager or owner is responsible for supplying energy for heating. The costs associated with your usage will be billed to you in your monthly utility bill. Find out in advance when you first visit your apartment and pay attention to this when signing your lease.

Gas supply in individual housing

If you live in individual housing, you are free to choose your gas supplier. However, for easy and hassle-free installation, simply use the same supplier as your predecessor. Ask the previous owners or tenants for information. This will allow you to use the same service providers.

Compare rates and change gas suppliers

If you want to change gas suppliers, check with your local municipality beforehand to find out which gas suppliers operate in the area.

Changing gas suppliers is easy, as the new provider will take care of the formalities. They will take over the gas supply service, replacing your former supplier. To do this, you will need to give them a mandate to act on your behalf when you sign the new contract. However, be aware of the terms and conditions and notice periods for termination.

The Luxembourg Regulatory Institute also answers all your questions about gas supply at ilr.lu. In particular, you will find a gas price comparison tool there.

Use the Calculix price comparison tool to choose the best electricity or gas supply offer based on your zip code and the number of people in your household.

When comparing prices, be sure to take into account all the details of the contract, not just the cost of energy. Many hidden costs can increase the final bill.

This will enable you to choose the best gas supplier and download the necessary documents to complete the change of supplier process.

Gas consumption and supply in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, the various suppliers offer environmentally friendly natural gas produced in Europe.

Half of Luxembourg's gas is imported from Belgium and the Netherlands. A quarter of its needs are covered by gas from Russia. The remaining quarter comes from liquid natural gas supplied by oil ports. Luxembourg is therefore less dependent than some of its European neighbors in the conflict with Ukraine.

Consumer gas prices jumped 61% in 2021 and 2022. To combat this gas price inflation, the government has limited price increases to 15% for 2024.

Luxembourg is ahead of many countries in its ability to offer bio gas, i.e., gas produced from the decomposition of organic matter. Although it is more expensive, it is not only environmentally friendly but also promotes Luxembourg's energy independence.

From 2023, new homes built in Luxembourg will no longer be equipped with gas heating.

Other types of heating for Luxembourg homes

Oil heating in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, some homes are still equipped with oil-fired boilers. This is currently more economical than electricity or gas, given the surge in energy costs. The price of oil, as well as the price of energy, is set at the national level by the Ministry of Economy.

As with other types of heating, oil-fired boilers should be serviced regularly.

There are many oil suppliers. Their contact details are easily accessible on the internet.

Other solutions for heating your home in Luxembourg

Some homes are heated partly or entirely by wood. Given the surge in energy prices, wood remains one of the most economical means of heating in Luxembourg. What's more, wood is a completely natural and non-polluting fuel, making it an eco-friendly option.

Local authorities regularly offer their residents the opportunity to purchase firewood. If you have a wood-fired central heating system or a wood-burning stove, ask your local authority for more information.

Maintenance of boilers and heating systems

Heating systems are regulated in Luxembourg and must be inspected regularly by a professional.
These inspections must be carried out every two years for solid or liquid fuel installations and every four years for gas installations. However, we recommend that you have your installation checked every year to ensure its safety and performance and to preserve its longevity.

The Chamber of Trades has a list of heating installers who hold a certificate for the periodic inspection of heating systems.

Tips for reducing your energy consumption

At a time of soaring energy prices and in order to conserve our natural resources, everyone must now adopt a responsible attitude towards the use of energy. To reduce your gas or electricity bills, here are some tips for saving energy.

Lower the overall temperature of your home

  • Reducing the temperature in our homes by 1 or 2 degrees can lower energy consumption and leadto significant savings. A 1-degree reduction means a 7% saving on your heating bill
  • Adjust the overall temperature of your home according to when you are at home or away. Lower the temperature at night and raise it 30 minutes before you wake up
  • The temperature in a bedroom should not exceed 19 degrees. Not only will you sleep much better, but you will also make significant savings.
Are your living rooms located on the south side? They will need less heating when the sun is shining.
  • Heat the bathroom when you take a shower or bath.
  • Remember to turn off the heating when you air the room. Some heaters are equipped with an "open window" device, which is very useful for saving money.
  • Close the shutters and blinds in hot weather.

Equip yourself with smart installations

  • Equip your heating system with smart applications thatwill manage the temperature of your home for you and save you money.
  • Fit your radiators with individual thermostats and vary the temperature of the rooms in your home according to their use.

Manage your appliances and electricity consumption consciously

  • Set your appliances to the right temperature: -18 degrees for your freezer and 7 degrees for your refrigerator
  • Defrost your freezer regularly
  • Use the eco programs on your household appliances such as your dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer.
  • Choose a vigorous spin cycle for your washing machine and dry your laundry in the open air rather than in the dryer. Take advantage of the sun to dry your laundry outside whenever possible
  • Remember to turn off the lights when you leave a room
  • Unplug household appliances (television, computers, PS, box, etc.) when you go on vacation and do not leave them on standby.
  • Always unplug your phone chargers when no device is connected to them
  • Don't forget to cover your pots and pans when boiling water or cooking food. They will heat up faster and you will save just as much
  • Lower the temperature of your water heater to 55-60 degrees Celsius. This is sufficient for normal hot water use and will prevent domestic accidents due to burns.

Insulating homes in Luxembourg

The energy rating of your home is a valuable indicator of its insulation and energy performance. The EPC is mandatory in Luxembourg when selling or renting a property and must be renewed every 10 years. Find out more about the energy performance certificate.

In addition, the Luxembourg government commissions energy performance specialists to visit private homes to identify areas for improvement. Financial assistance such as the Klima Prêt loan is available to help individuals renovate and improve the energy performance of their homes.

Installation of photovoltaic panels in Luxembourg

Want to produce your own green energy? It's more than possible in Luxembourg. The Luxembourg government has set a target of 25% green energy consumption of total consumption by 2030.

To achieve this goal, Luxembourg is encouraging individuals to install photovoltaic solar panels on their homes. By producing your own energy, you are helping to reduce the negative impact of our energy consumption on the environment.

Government subsidies for photovoltaic installation

You can obtain Klimabonus assistance in two ways:

  • From January 1, 2022, until the end of 2025, the government will finance 20% of the cost of installing your photovoltaic panels. It also guarantees a feed-in tariff capped at €500/kWp.
  • Since January 1, 2023, you can opt for financing of up to 62.5% of the cost of your installation. This option is valid for installations invoiced until the end of December 2025.
In addition, since the beginning of 2023, the installation of photovoltaic panels has benefited from a super-reduced VAT rate of 3%.

Municipal subsidies for the installation of photovoltaic panels

Some municipalities offer their residents additional subsidies for the installation of solar panels. Check with your municipality for more information.
