How do I register my vehicle in Luxembourg?

You’ve just arrived in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and have recently moved in. What’s next? You’ll need to have your driver’s license recognized, insure your vehicle, and register it in Luxembourg.

In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the steps to register your vehicle.

Reserving your brand-new license plate

Starting from the date you settle in the Grand Duchy, your vehicle must have a brand-new license plate to drive on the country’s roads. You have 6 months to change your license plate, which can be personalized if you wish.

New license plate number: how to proceed?

Visit MyGuichet.lu to reserve your license plate number. Please note that there are two types of license plate numbers:

  • Standard series numbers: This number consists of 2 letters and 4 digits and follows the order of available registrations. It is assigned to a vehicle for its entire lifespan.
  • Personalized numbers: Drivers can choose a unique license plate if they wish. This plate belongs exclusively to its owner, who may transfer it to another driver. However, you will need to pay an additional €50 in tax stamps compared to a standard serial number, and €24 if you need to replace that same license plate.

Personalized license plates: what are the steps?

Want to stand out with a custom license plate? Drivers love this popular practice in Luxembourg and proudly display them on their vehicles.

Highly popular among vehicle owners, personalized license plates also offer another advantage: they make it easier to remember the number and identify your vehicle when it’s parked in a lot!

Custom numbers can come in different formats:

  • 4-digit numbers, which are traditional in Luxembourg, are currently available only through a waiting list.
  • 5-digit numbers are easier to obtain
  • A combination of 2 letters and 4 personalized digits. These often include the owner’s initials and their birthday. With a little luck, the plate you want hasn’t been assigned yet.

To save time and help you create your personalized license plate, visit MyGuichet.lu. You can check the availability of your license plate number.

Request a registration certificate

Have you reserved your plate on MyGuichet? The next step is to apply for a registration certificate from the Société nationale de circulation automobile (SNCA) in Sandweiler. This agency handles all vehicle registrations in Luxembourg under the authority of the Luxembourg Ministry of Transport.

Registration certificate: how to obtain it?

By logging in to the SNCA website, you can download the application form for a registration certificate. Once completed, the document can be returned by mail or dropped off at the SNCA reception desk. You can also schedule an appointment via their website.

At the same time, you must purchase auto insurance from an insurance company licensed in Luxembourg. To certify that your vehicle is in good standing in the country, it must be cleared through customs by obtaining a 705 sticker. This procedure applies toall cars purchased abroad that have traveled more than 6,000 km and were first registered more than six months ago.

To do this, visit one of the three Customs and Excise Administration centers located in Gasperich, Grevenmarcher, or Diekirch.

Here is the list of documents you need to prepare to compile your application to submit to the SNCA:

  • The completed and signed application form for a registration certificate;
  • A copy of your ID;
  • The invoice for your vehicle;
  • The insurance certificate issued by an insurer authorized in Luxembourg;
  • The 705 sticker (customs document)
  • A valid technical inspection certificate for your vehicle;
  • The European Certificate of Conformity for vehicles registered on orafter February1, 2016;
  • The foreign registration document;
  • A €50 “chancellery fee” revenue stamp
  • Optional: an additional €50 stamp (if you have opted for a personalized license plate).

After obtaining your registration certificate, contact an authorized manufacturer to have your new license plates made. You can find the list on the SNCA website.

More information on registering your vehicle and the necessary steps can be found on the SNCA website.
