A distanceThe Contern International Comic Strip Festival: a comic strip celebration not to be missed!
Every year in July, the village of Contern is transformed into Luxembourg's comic book capital with its International Comic Book Festival. This event is a must for fans of the 9th art and attracts more than 8,000 visitors every year from all over Luxembourg and neighboring regions. They are drawn by the unique opportunity to add rare items to their collections and meet renowned authors from the world of comics.
In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 32nd edition. The dates are yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to take place on the third weekend of July. The festival is renowned for its festive and friendly atmosphere.
More than a hundred dealer stands are present at the Contern International Comic Book Festival, much to the delight of comic book lovers.
Collectors can find their favorite comics or discover other comics of different styles and origins: American comics, manga, fantasy comics, etc. Of course, the great classics of Belgian, French, English, and German comics are also on display. There is a wide choice for collectors, who may also find figurines of their favorite characters at one of the stands.
Visitors can also meet comic book authors from different countries: Belgian, French, Luxembourgish, British, and German, who will be signing copies of their latest albums. More than fifty internationally renowned authors will be present to showcase their work. Fans can chat directly with their favorite creators during the signing sessions.
During the Comic Book Festival, the streets of the village of Contern will be brought to life with musical shows and street performances. Children can also take part in workshops, such as making Spirou hats or bracelets.
A stamp hunt using a Kidspass is also planned for younger children.
The Contern International Comic Strip Festival welcomes around 6,000 visitors every year. In 2024, the Festival celebrated its 30th anniversary!

The art of Luxembourgish comics is not as developed as in Belgium or France. However, in recent decades, Luxembourgish comics have experienced a real boom, driven by a generation of artists and publishers determined to promote their cultural identity.
In a multilingual country where Luxembourgish, French, and German coexist, comics have often been influenced by the works of their neighbors. But today, local artists are developing their own style, in tune with the realities of Luxembourg.
Luxembourg comics tackle universal themes while remaining rooted in local characteristics. The history of Luxembourg, with its strategic role during the world wars and its evolution as a European financial center, is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Humorous stories, social commentary, and fantasy adventures are also popular genres.
A few Luxembourgish authors stand out on the local and international scene:
Superjhemp is a zany superhero, dressed in a jersey in the colors of the Luxembourg flag and who gorges himself on Kachkéis, a Luxembourg specialty. He embodies both national clichés and pride. With his caustic humor and references to the country's political and cultural realities, he has become a cult figure in Luxembourg. Created in 1988, this character, drawn by Roger Leiner, wants to save "Luxusbuerg." Nearly 30 comic books and a film, Superjhemp Retörns, released in 2018, are dedicated to him.
Are you passionate about comics? Here are a few specialized fairs to help you escape from Luxembourg.
