CinEast Festival: the must-see event for Central and Eastern European cinema

Since its inception in October 2008, the CinEast (Ciné-East) Central and Eastern European Film Festival has become a major cultural event in Luxembourg.

This annual event celebrates the richness and diversity of cinema in Central and Eastern European countries, attracting an ever-growing and enthusiastic audience each year.

Dates and upcoming editions of the CinEast Festival in Luxembourg

The last edition of CinEast was held from October 10 to 25, 2025, attracting more than 10,500 viewers.

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially confirmed. However, film lovers can already plan for a new edition in early October, in line with the usual schedule.

A rich and varied selection of films from Central and Eastern Europe

Each year, the festival presents a wide selection of feature films and short films from Central and Eastern European countries. These works explore a wide variety of genres (dramas, comedies, documentaries, animated films) and relevant social themes.

Screenings take place in Luxembourg's main movie theaters, but also in more unusual venues such as Sang A Klang, known for its jazz evenings, and Neimenster Abbey.

In addition to film screenings, CinEast also offers a wide range of parallel activities:

  • Photo exhibitions: immersive visual galleries inspired by the themes addressed by the festival's films.
  • Conferences and debates: open discussions with directors, producers, and actors to offer unique perspectives.
  • Concerts and theme nights: festive cultural events open to all.
  • Children's entertainment: special screenings and fun activities designed for younger audiences.

The entire program outside of the film screenings contributes to creating a very special atmosphere at this festival, which highlights the culture of Central and Eastern Europe. Children attending this Eastern European film festival are not forgotten. Activities are specially planned for them!

In 2024, the spotlight was on Croatia and its film production.

The CinEast Festival, a high-level competition

More than a hundred films compete each year at the CinEast Festival. In 2024, Croatia was honored, highlighting the vitality of its film production.

The films in competition are evaluated by several juries:

  • International jury: composed of renowned film professionals,
  • Press jury: made up of specialist journalists,
  • Audience vote: viewers can also award a prize to their favorite film.

The best film in each category receives a prestigious award, with a special screening dedicated to it at the Cinémathèque de Luxembourg.

In 2024, the Grand Prix was awarded to the film Toxic and the Special Jury Prize to the film Windless. But many other awards highlight other productions, including short films and documentaries.

Prestigious guests and enriching exchanges

Each edition of the CinEast Festival welcomes around 40 prestigious guests: directors, producers, actors, and personalities from the world of cinema. These guests participate in debates and discussions with the audience, offering viewers a rare opportunity to engage directly with the creators.

In 2023, Patrice Leconte, the famous French director, was present to host a masterclass at the Cinémathèque de Luxembourg, an event highly prized by film lovers.

A film event not to be missed in Luxembourg

The CinEast Festival is aimed at all film enthusiasts and those curious to discover lesser-known works. Those who wish to enrich their worldview through the seventh art are also welcome.

The CinEast Festival calls on volunteers to help with its organization, offering a unique opportunity to experience the event from the inside.

A glimpse into the regional film scene

Do you love cinema? Don't miss the Luxembourg Film Festival in February or March each year.

Did you know that the Lorraine region, which borders Luxembourg, also hosts a renowned film event? The Villerupt Italian Film Festival was created by members of the local Italian community and showcases Italian cinema. This festival, like the CinEast Festival, reflects the cultural vitality of the region and the diversity of its film offerings.

The CinEast Festival is much more than a film festival. It is a journey to the heart of Central and Eastern Europe. With its rich program and varied activities, the CinEast Festival has established itself as an unmissable cultural event in Luxembourg.
