Ecole Maria Montessori – L’Enfant Roi
Our school is based on creating Montessori environments in which children can grow, develop, and learn freely and independently. The teaching materials developed by Maria Montessori enable children to grasp fundamental concepts, such as mathematics, language, and science, through their senses, within a frame of reference.
Maria Montessori Preschool Luxembourg
Montessori environments for children aged 3 to6
Our Montessori environments offer students a wide variety of learning areas. From practical life exercises to geometry and mathematics, as well as reading and writing, our preschool classes provide students with knowledge, social skills, and life skills.
Our different classes meet these criteria for harmonious organization by subject area. They are learning islands where there is no competition, but equal opportunities for everyone.
Montessori practical exercises for greater independence and learning
Practical life exercises enable children to become more independent through their direct connection to everyday life. Tying their shoes, serving themselves food and drink, putting on their coats, cooking or washing dishes, sweeping the floor, caring for plants and animals...these are just some of the activities offered to children on a daily basis, with an emphasis on politeness and courtesy. This is a process of integrating children into daily and social life.
Children are attracted to accuracy and mathematical truths; in this respect, they are scientific minds in their own right. The aim here is to approach the major geometric and mathematical concepts in a concrete way. We use Montessori math materials to meet children's needs. Children learn about mass and symbols, the concept of zero and odd/even numbers, the decimal system, and mathematical operations from a very young age.
The freedom to read and write is particularly appealing to children. Maria Montessori created adapted language teaching materials that encourage children to learn at their own pace: rough letters and a movable alphabet enable children to learn to write and read in a fundamental way.
Children are naturally open to the world around them: nature, the past, and the cosmos. It is therefore important for them to have their own experiences and discoveries. Children discover their environment, its structure, and how it works through workshops such as tending the vegetable garden, walks in the forest, and trips to educational farms.
Maria Montessori Primary School Luxembourg
Montessori environments for children aged 6 to 12
In primary school, children perfect their written language skills (calligraphy, grammar, and spelling). They refine their reading skills, deepen their understanding of mathematics and botany, and broaden their knowledge of geography and history. They continue to deepen their general knowledge and ask questions about the world and how it works.
Learning at the children's own pace at the Maria Montessori Luxembourg school
Students have the opportunity to develop at their own pace through individualized work. There are no classes that require all students to study a particular subject at a specific time of day. However, children are given a roadmap to help them understand the expected objectives and structure their days.
On this basis, each child charts their own path to acquire new skills or deepen their existing knowledge. The aim is not to choose what the student should learn, but to offer them as wide a choice as possible to satisfy their intellectual appetite. Ultimately, each child will validate the required learning outcomes, but will have chosen their own path of learning in a stimulating environment where the teacher supports them in their choices.
All the teaching methods advocated by Maria Montessori and practiced in our school promote the right to equality for all and the absence of competition. Students work for themselves, not to get good grades. As such, there are no grades, class assignments, report cards, or homework.
Organization of work at the Maria Montessori School in Luxembourg
In the mornings, children work in class on the principle of free choice. A French-speaking teacher and a German- or English-speaking educator supervise and guide them on a daily basis. The principle of language immersion is the same as in kindergarten: learning takes place in both languages at the same time.
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons are dedicated to exploring the students' athletic, artistic, or cultural talents.
Sports education to develop moral values
Understanding and respecting the rules of the game, promoting teamwork, pushing oneself to excel, being a good loser, and helping others—sports convey moral values that meet the needs of children of this age.
In our sports workshops, the important thing is not to win but to learn to control your movements and improve your own skills without trying to beat others.
Art education for experimentation
Based on the work of Arno Stern, art workshops do not teach a specific artistic technique. Instead , they provide a place for students to express themselves, experiment, and find their own technique.
Cultural education to develop personal interests
Students aged 6 to 12 are curious about the world around them, sometimes asking puzzling questions. This workshop allows them to explore their personal interests in greater depth. Students can suggest cultural outings and set off to discover the world, or stay in class and work on their project. They satisfy their need for discovery by delving ever deeper into the details of their subject. They can then, if they wish, present their research to their classmates.
Maria Montessori After-School Care Center in Luxembourg
Our Maison Relais welcomes students outside of school hours. For reasons of comfort and safety, it is located on the same site as the school.
This means that children are on site for all the activities they decide to undertake. The supervisory staff consists of the educators and teachers they are used to seeing in class, ensuring a friendly and family-like atmosphere in which students can thrive in complete peace of mind. They enjoy a wide range of activities: music, arts and crafts, cooking, trips to the park, free play, and relaxation areas.
Multilingualism at our Maria Montessori school
We are a trilingual school, teaching French, German, and English. We are committed to not organizing the learning of these languages in compulsory classes with fixed durations and frequencies: children are immersed in a non-violent and continuous "language bath."
Each teacher speaks exclusively in their native language in order to promote the correct learning of accent and syntax. We use materials adapted to the characteristics of each language to enable children to deepen their knowledge.
This trilingualism responds, on the one hand, to the principles of "sensitive periods" (periods of learning through absorption). On the other hand, it allows our students to develop language skills that enable them to join different secondary schools to continue their education.
In this respect, we follow government guidelines that promote multilingualism from an early age as a guarantee of academic success.
