Housing for students and interns
Are you planning to continue your studies in Luxembourg, or have you landed an internship at a European institution or a company in Luxembourg? Congratulations!
Now you just need to find a place to live for the duration of your internship or studies. Here are a few tips to help you find housing in Luxembourg more easily as a student.
Student Housing in Luxembourg: The Latest News You Need to Know
Finding student housing in Luxembourg remains a real challenge. Despite efforts made in recent years, tensions in the housing market persist and directly impact students, particularly international students and newcomers.
Supply still falls short of demand
The number of available housing units remains far below demand. The University of Luxembourg can only offer a limited number of rooms, covering approximately 15 to 20% of requests. Each year, many students thus find themselves without a solution as the start of the academic year approaches.
Applications for university housing are subject to availability, and no spot can be guaranteed, forcing students to plan ahead and consider alternatives.
High prices that strain budgets
Luxembourg remains one of the most expensive countries in Europe when it comes to housing. Even for students, the costs are significant:
- starting at around €450 per month in university housing
- often more than €1,000 for a room or studio on the private market
This situation contributes to growing financial insecurity among some students, who are already facing a general rise in the cost of living.
New measures for affordable housing
Since 2026, access to affordable housing has been simplified with the implementation of a single national registry (RENLA), accessible via MyGuichet. This system aims to centralize applications and make the process clearer for applicants.
In addition, the eligibility requirements for affordable housing have been clarified, particularly regarding income and residency criteria.
Alternative solutions emerging for students
In response to these challenges, new forms of housing are emerging:
- shared housing, which is becoming increasingly common
- co-living with included services
- intergenerational living
These solutions help reduce costs and facilitate integration, while meeting a growing demand for flexibility.
A major challenge for international students
With a high proportion of international students, Luxembourg attracts new students every year. This appeal puts pressure on the housing market and makes planning ahead essential.
In some cases, the lack of housing can even jeopardize a student’s academic plans or complicate their move to the country.
Key takeaway
- a severe shortage of student housing
- High prices, including for rooms
- steps to take well in advance
- alternatives to consider quickly
Tip: It is recommended to start your search at least 3 months in advance and explore multiple options to ensure you secure housing.

Housing reserved for UNI students in Luxembourg
University residence halls offer housing at preferential rates. However, these are reserved for students enrolled at the University of Luxembourg.
To be eligible for housing in a university residence hall, students must be enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral program. Students enrolled for a semester at the University of Luxembourg as part of an exchange program or as a “free mover” may also apply for student housing.
UNI University Residences: Available Housing
UNI has more than thirty residence halls located throughout the country, near university campuses. It offers more than 1,000 housing units to its students.
The housing options are very diverse. A student can rent a 15-square-meter furnished room with shared or private kitchen and bathroom facilities at a lower rate. A single student can also rent a 24-square-meter studio apartment, while a couple can have access to housing up to 35 square meters.
The university residences offer a cleaning service for common areas. A vacuum cleaner is also available for students
Rates and Conditions for University Residences
The University of Luxembourg offers lease agreements ranging from 5 to 7 months. The lease may be extended if the student re-enrolls at the university. However, the maximum stay cannot exceed the duration of the student’s studies.
Given the shortage of university housing and high demand (8,000 students at the university, 60% of whom are international), the maximum rental period is limited to the standard duration of studies:
- 36 months for a bachelor’s degree
- 24 months for a master’s degree
- 24 months for a PhD, even though the standard duration of studies for a PhD student is 48 months.
Rates are very attractive, and the accommodations are furnished. Prices range from €400 to over €1,000 per month depending on the size of the unit. Rent includes various utilities, namely water, electricity, and heating. High-speed internet access is also included in the rent.
The student tenant must pay a security deposit before moving in, as with any rental agreement. This deposit is equivalent to one month’s rent and must be paid by bank transfer. Additionally, a security deposit must be paid.
Home insurance is mandatory andmust be purchased from an insurance company licensed in Luxembourg. The University of Luxembourg offers comprehensive home insurance. This policy is valid for a one-year period, from September to September. It covers various risks such as fire, water damage, broken glass, and personal liability. Students can sign up directly online at Allia.lu.
Applications for university housing can be submitted online directly on the University of Luxembourg’s website. However, the application is only final after the student has paid the security deposit. Housing is allocated based on the applicant’s file by the Office of Academic Affairs and Student Life (SEVE).

Students and interns: finding housing in Luxembourg
Not lucky enough to get university housing? Finding temporary housing as a student or intern can be tricky. Ads posted on social media can sometimes be misleading, so it’s important to stay vigilant.
Don’t hesitate to tap into your network. Short-term housing opportunitiescan often be found through word of mouth. Not all listings are necessarily advertised publicly.
Student housing is intended for young people looking to stay temporarily in Luxembourg for academic studies or a summer job.
Some student housing is reserved for interns of all nationalities. Furnished and suited to student life, these accommodations are relatively rare in Luxembourg, and their prices vary significantly from one residence to another.
Founded in 2005, “Wunnraum Fir Stagiairen” is a reception and housing service for interns of all nationalities. The non-profit organization operates four residences and houses across Luxembourg, ranging from 2 to 17 rooms. Each room is furnished and has internet access. Prices vary depending on location but are much more affordable than a standard furnished rental, ranging from 400 to 750 euros.
To secure a room in one of the service’s residences or houses, the intern must submit an application including:
- a recent photo,
- a resume,
- a cover letter,
- proof of identity,
- a copy of the internship agreement,
- a visa for nationals of countries outside the European Union.
