Train travel: everything you need to know

Whether you’re making a daily round trip or traveling during off-peak hours, taking the train in Luxembourg remains a fast and convenient option. Traveling by Train in Luxembourg
Rail Stations and Services
CFL passenger trains offer an eco-friendly transportation service powered by 100% renewable electricity, with zero CO2 emissions. The network covers the entire country with regular lines, efficiently connecting towns and villages to the Luxembourg capital and its central station.
The Mobiliteit.lu app provides travelers with real-time access to train routes, stops, and schedules, making travel easier.
Luxembourg National Railway Company
All train travel in Luxembourg is managed by the CFL, the Luxembourg National Railway Company.

Tickets and Fares
Since February 2020, second-class public transportation has been free in Luxembourg. First-class travel remains subject to a fare, with rates tailored to the different needs of passengers:
- 2-hour ticket (1st class): €3
- Book of ten 2-hour tickets: €24
- 1-day ticket (1st class): €6
- Monthly pass (1st class): €60
- Annual pass (first class): €500
- Reduced rate for seniors: €200
Bus travel, however, is completely free throughout Luxembourg.

Cross-border travel
Traveling within the Greater Region
Every day, thousands of cross-border workers take regional trains to reach Luxembourg City or intermediate towns to work there.
Luxembourg and cross-border tickets can be purchased via the CFL app.
Traveling by train to France and Europe
From Luxembourg’s main train station, several regular train lines serve France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. Check with the ticket counters or visit the CFL website.
Luxembourg Station also offers several daily TGV (high-speed) trains to France. You can reach Paris in 2 hours and 20 minutes from Luxembourg Station or Montpellier in the south in 7 hours.
TGV and regular trains from Luxembourg also serve the Metz TGV station. From there, you can travel to other major French cities via direct TGV service or via Paris, Lyon, and more.
The Lorraine TGV station, nearLorraine Airport, offers additional direct TGV services to the following destinations: Strasbourg, Paris CDG Airport, Marne-la-Vallée (Disneyland), Le Mans, Angers, Nantes, Poitiers, Rennes, Bordeaux…
Long-term outdoor parking is available.
From the Luxembourg station (bus station), a shuttle bus runs to the Lorraine TGV station in less than 1 hour and 30 minutes. Reservations for seats on the “Gare Lorraine TGV-Express” bus are required and can be made at CFL stations. See www.cfl.lu.

Purchasing train tickets and passes
First-class tickets must be purchased via the CFL app or at ticket machines in the station. Specific passes (annual, senior, and Studentepass) are available exclusively through the CFL app
CFL physical ticket offices no longer sell first-class tickets.
Annual passes are now sold only by rail companies in neighboring countries: Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, and SNCB.
Tickets
As of January 1, 2026, the mKaart card can no longer be used for train or bus tickets in Luxembourg.
It has been replaced by digital and automated solutions: you can now purchase your tickets and passes—including for first-class travel or cross-border trips—directly viathe official CFL app or at ticket machines in stations.
For national public transit (bus, 2nd-class train, tram), most trips remain free, but the app or ticket machines are still required for certain paid tickets and to make your travels easier.
Reservations and TGV Ticket Purchases to France
Reservations are required for TGV trains. You can purchase your TGV ticket at the ticket counters at Luxembourg Station or order your ticket by phone through CFL. Your ticket will be mailed to you, along with all travel information, within two business days of your order. Learn more about CFL.

Reduced Mobility and Boarding at Stations and on Trains
Luxembourg’s stations are equipped to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility, with easy access to platforms and adapted train cars.
Multimodal journeys
Luxembourg is increasingly developing multimodal hubs that facilitate connections between different modes of transport: trains, buses, trams, bicycles, and cars.
Connections
Connections with trams and buses ensure seamless transportation service. Furthermore,regular bus routes allow travelers to reach destinations not served by rail.
Parking near train stations
Car parks are available near train stations to facilitate access to trains. You can even take advantage of free “Kiss&Rail” spots for 20 minutes—enough time to drop off passengers—as at Luxembourg Central Station.
Bike Parking
Secure bike parking facilities have been set up to make travel easier for those who prefer sustainable transportation. They are easily accessible using an mKaart card.
CFL Ticket Offices and Mobile App
Given that public transportation is free, only the largest stations have kept their CFL ticket counters open.
CFL Luxembourg Station Ticket Counter Hours
The central ticket counters at Luxembourg Station are open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
The international transport ticket counters are open from 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM Monday through Sunday and on public holidays. Telephone information services are available from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Saturday and from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Sundays and public holidays.
You will also find ticket machines where you can purchase tickets outside of these hours.
Belval-Université CFL Station Hours
On weekdays, the ticket counters at Belval-Université Station open at 7:00 AM and close at 7:00 PM. However, they are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Esch-sur-Alzette CFL Station Hours
The ticket windows at the CFL station in Esch-sur-Alzette are open from 6:15 AM to 9:30 PM Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
