It’s important to note that roaming charges were eliminated in 2017. As a result , bills have become more affordable, especially for travelers outside Luxembourg’s borders. Calls received abroad or made from abroad on your Luxembourg mobile phone are no longer subject to additional charges within Europe.

Should you choose 4G or 5G in Luxembourg?

With 5G, the mobile phone landscape is undergoing a true revolution in Luxembourg. Download speeds have increased twentyfold, and latency has been significantly reduced. 5G undeniably offers a more efficient smartphone experience and a more comprehensive user experience.

However, some carriers are further ahead than others when it comes to 5G. So should you opt for 5G or not?

It’s important to note that the maximum speed currently available is only 1 Gbps. Not all operators reach this speed.

Furthermore, 5G coverage is not uniform across the country. Of course, the capital, Luxembourg City, currently has the best coverage. If you live and/or work in Luxembourg City, 5G may be very appealing to you. Similarly, if you live and/or work in the southern part of the country, particularly around Esch-sur-Alzette.

On the other hand, 5G coverage is more sporadic in the rest of the country, particularly in the north. Even 4G is sometimes hard to come by.

Nevertheless, you should be able to browse the web with ease and, in particular, access all media on your mobile or desktop.

Internet connection, broadband, and Wi-Fi at home

Luxembourg stands out for its top-tier internet performance. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, internet providers guarantee a reliable and fast connection. Whether you’re working from home, streaming videos, or participating in video conferences, fiber-optic and high-speed connections ensure a seamless online experience.

Today, many companies in Luxembourg encourage remote work.

Telecom networks for internet connections

Subscribing to the right telecom network is essential when living abroad. Having access to high-performance telecommunications allows you to stay in touch with family and friends back in your home country. This helps reduce the sense of disorientation often associated with living abroad. Isolation is a common challenge for expats.

That is why it is essential to stay in touch with family and friends, and we have all realized this during lockdowns.

To ensure a smooth internet connection, especially when multiple family members are online at the same time, we recommend opting for fiber-optic internet if possible. Although fiber-optic infrastructure is expanding throughout Luxembourg, it is not yet available everywhere. You can check with your internet service providers.

Internet Providers in Luxembourg

The main internet providers in Luxembourg offer high-speed internet access via ADSL. These include Eltrona, Post, Tango, Orange, and Luxembourg Online.

They will offer to install the modem, as well as Wi-Fi, so you can enjoy wireless internet throughout your home. The speeds offered generally range up to 1,000 Mbps, which allows for smooth internet use, including streaming and video calls.

An internet subscription costs around 60 euros per month in Luxembourg.

Internet Connections

When you arrive in Luxembourg, it is generally common to have to wait a few days, or even a few weeks, to get a phone and internet connection that meets your needs.

Post is the main telecom operator; it manages the lines and networks throughout the country, with the exception of the Eltrona network, which has its own infrastructure. Post must therefore intervene first to activate the line if you choose a different provider. Appointments can take up to a month to schedule.
Appointments with Post will be scheduled directly by your chosen provider. You don’t have to do anything. Once Post has completed the installation, the provider can proceed.

Tip: No matter which provider you choose, request the connection as early as possible because it takes time!

Fiber Optics for a Better Telecom Experience

Why choose fiber optics in Luxembourg?

When it comes to telecommunications, fiber optics are becoming increasingly widespread in Luxembourg. Municipalities are now better and better equipped with fiber-optic networks.

Communicating easily with loved ones via all types of media, surfing the web, gaming, or streaming music is up to 10 times faster with fiber optics than with standard ADSL. Plus, download volumes can be unlimited—or nearly so.

The connection is perfect for digital applications such as Skype for communicating with loved ones or streaming (on-demand) movies and music.

Furthermore, the ever-improving quality of video games—in terms of graphics and technical complexity—along with the ability to play online, are key factors driving the switch to fiber optics.
As for remote work, it practically requires a fiber-optic connection.

Cost of fiber optics in Luxembourg

In terms of price, fiber optic internet has become very affordable when you consider the level of convenience it provides.

However, the installation costs for fiber optic service are not always clearly stated in providers’ offers. The bill may be higher if your building or home is not already connected. Check with your building manager or the previous occupant of your home. Find out in advance if your telecom setup is eligible and under what conditions the installation can be done. And switch to fiber to enjoy faster and much higher-quality connections.

Television in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, a variety of international and local channels are available to you, accessible via the internet or a satellite installation. Serviceproviders such as POST Luxembourg TV offer packages tailored to all tastes, whether you’re into series, movies, sports, or documentaries. Opt for multilingual packages for an immersive experience that reflects Luxembourg’s cultural diversity.

You can opt for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). Note, however, that fiber-optic internet is required to use this service.

IPTV is an alternative to cable or satellite providers. Internet + TV packages cost around 70–80 euros per month in Luxembourg. Decoder rental and installation may incur additional costs. Check in advance. Also verify the number of channels offered—generally around a hundred—as well as the ability to record programs.

If you do not wish to opt for Internet TV, installing a satellite dish is always an option. This will allow you to receive all channels, including those from your home country.

Free Wi-Fi in Luxembourg’s cities

Surf at high speeds and low cost with the free Wi-Fi networks popping up in Luxembourg’s cities: Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Strassen, Dudelange, and others.

Wi-Fi networks are now available in several cities across the country. Feel free to connect to Wi-Fi networks such as hotcity, citywifi, cityluxfree, and more. This gives you free internet access at most major locations, without a password, for a limited time or with no time limit thanks to a discounted premium connection. An initiative that has already made life easier for thousands of users in Luxembourg! The connection speed may be quite slow, but it can be a lifesaver when needed.

While Luxembourg City appears well-equipped in terms of internet infrastructure, the large number of people using it reduces its performance. Larger southern towns like Differdange, Dudelange, or Esch-sur-Alzette offer better connections. Ettelbruck in the north also ranks highly.

Luxembourg, a hub for telecommunications companies

Luxembourg has become a hub for international telecommunications companies. Thanks to its modern infrastructure and advanced connectivity, it attracts many companies, including SES, a global leader in satellite communications.

Sending and receiving packages in Luxembourg and abroad

Parcel delivery from abroad isn’t always easy in Luxembourg. In fact , the Grand Duchy is not well-served by online retailers, unless the provider already operates in Belgium.

Consider Post’s PackUp Import service. Plus, it allows you to pick up your packages at designated, secure locations with 24/7 access. Post also offers package drop-off at your home, at a location agreed upon in advance.

With Post, you can also send your packages anywhere in Luxembourg and internationally.

Also consider the Mondial Relay network, which is expanding rapidly in Luxembourg, or a concierge service.
