Shared Housing in Luxembourg: A Way to Cut Down on Housing Costs

Are you looking for a shared apartment in Luxembourg? Here are our tips for finding a shared apartment in Luxembourg.

We’ll also tell you about an innovative shared living arrangement between young adults and seniors. No matter your generation, everyone benefits from this unique living arrangement.

Finding a shared apartment

In Luxembourg, shared housing is a very popular housing option among young employees and interns. On the other hand, traditional landlords aren’t always willing to rent to a shared household.

According to the website Appartager.lu, you should expect to spend an average of over €700 to find a room to rent. In Luxembourg City, you should budget around €900.

Websites for finding a shared apartment in Luxembourg

Given the high rent prices in Luxembourg, many young international professionals are looking for shared housing. To meet this growing demand, organizations have emerged that specialize in offering co-living solutions in Luxembourg.

There are numerous websites and online forums in Luxembourg dedicated to finding shared housing. These include:

  • roomie-radar.com
  • Roomez.lu,
  • Appartager.lu
  • Weconnect.lu
  • Vaubanfort.lu
  • Flexiroom.eu.

You’ll find not only listings for people looking for housing, but also offers for rooms, studios, apartments, and houses for rent or to share with others.

These sites also give you the opportunity to meet people who share your preferences and expectations when it comes to housing.

Facebook is also a good way to find housing. Look for the following groups:

  • Roommate Search Luxembourg,
  • Colocation au Luxembourg
  • Colocation Luxembourg/WG Lëtzebuerg).

You can post your own ad looking for a roommate.

Real estate agencies to help you find a roommate

You can also contact real estate agencies to find a shared apartment. With a large list of properties for rent, they know which landlords are willing to rent their units as shared apartments—which isn’t always obvious! Agencies also offer personalized support and can guide you in your search. They’ll also advise you on expected rental prices.

Classified ads to find a shared apartment

Don’t overlook newspapers and classified ads, though. Even if classified ads in newspapers may seem a bit “old school,” they remain an effective way to find a roommate quickly. So be sure to check out Luxembourgish newspapers, such as Le Wort and L’Essentiel, which regularly feature housing-related classified ads in their pages.

Unique intergenerational shared living in Luxembourg

What is intergenerational co-living?

Intergenerational co-living is a new housing model that is becoming increasingly common in Luxembourg. Intergenerational co-living has a social aspect. In practice, it involves connecting older people who have extra space with young people. The young people can benefit from housing in exchange for a helping hand, a reassuring presence, or a reduced rent.

In Luxembourg, intergenerational cohabitation began in 2015 through Cohabit’âge. The concept is simple: to foster mutual support between older adults and young people. Younger individuals—between the ages of 18 and 40—commit to helping their elders in exchange for low-cost rent, or even free of charge for those who are most dedicated.

In exchange for very low rent, students commit to helping older adults with various tasks. This can include mobility assistance, help with grocery shopping, administrative support, small repairs, organizing shared meals, gardening, and more.

Intergenerational Roommate Arrangements

Three options are best suited to everyone’s needs and requirements. The entire arrangement is governed by a roommate agreement established and supervised by Cohabit’Age, which acts as an intermediary in the relationship.

  • The solidarity option allows the young person to commit to providing a reassuring and caring presence a few evenings a week and a few weekends a month. In exchange, the senior provides a furnished room completely free of charge.
  • The social option requires a regular presence in exchange for a monthly contribution toward living expenses.
  • The “friendly” option requires only the building of relationships, a friendly atmosphere, and respect for the senior’s peace and quiet. In exchange, the young person is provided with housing in exchange for a generous monthly stipend.

Caritas Asbl is also behind a cohabitation project that focuses on social integration between seniors with modest incomes and students—often from foreign backgrounds—who have come to study in Luxembourg.

Funded by the City of Luxembourg and the Ministry of Housing, Doheem mateneen opened its doors in 2017 in Beggen. This residence welcomes seniors and students who struggle to afford rent. The goal of this initiative is mutual support between two generations that often face financial insecurity.

The 2,000-square-meter residence includes twelve apartments of approximately 45 square meters for seniors and 12 student units of approximately 15 square meters with a kitchen and shared living spaces, a multipurpose common room, as well as functional spaces such as a workshop, a treatment room, garden plots, etc.
