Unusual intergenerational shared housing in Luxembourg
What is intergenerational shared housing?
Intergenerational co-living is a new type of housing that is becoming increasingly popular in Luxembourg. Intergenerational co-living has a social aspect. In concrete terms, it involves bringing together older people who have space available with young people. The latter can enjoy accommodation in exchange for a helping hand, a reassuring presence, or a moderate rent.
In Luxembourg, intergenerational cohabitation began in 2015 through Cohabit'âge. The concept is simple: to develop mutual support between older and younger people. Younger people – between the ages of 18 and 40 – commit to helping their elders in exchange for low-cost rent, or even free rent for those who are most involved.
In exchange for very low rent, students commit to helping older people with various tasks. This can include assistance with mobility, help with shopping, administrative assistance, small repairs, organizing communal meals, gardening, etc.
Intergenerational roommate options
Three options are available to best suit the needs and requirements of each party. Everything is governed by a shared housing contract drawn up and supervised by Cohabit'Age, which acts as an intermediary in the relationship.
- The solidarity option allows young people to commit to providing a reassuring and caring presence a few evenings a week and a few weekends a month. In exchange, the senior citizen provides a furnished room completely free of charge.
- The friendly option requires regular presence in exchange for a monthly contribution to expenses.
- The friendship option only requires the creation of bonds, friendliness, and respect for the senior's peace and quiet. In exchange, the young person is provided with accommodation in return for an attractive monthly financial allowance.
Caritas Asbl is also behind a cohabitation project that focuses on social diversity between seniors on modest incomes and students, often of foreign origin, who have come to study in Luxembourg.
Funded by the City of Luxembourg and the Ministry of Housing, Doheem mateneen opened its doors in Beggen in 2017. This residence welcomes seniors and students who struggle to pay rent. The aim of this initiative is to promote mutual support between two generations that often face precarious situations.
The 2,000 m² residence comprises twelve apartments of approximately 45 m² for seniors and 12 student apartments of approximately 15 m² with shared kitchens and living areas, a multipurpose common room, as well as functional spaces such as a workshop, a treatment room, garden plots, etc.
