Historically the most populated district in the city in the 17th century, today it is a district with barely 1,000 residents.
Quiet and central, the Grund district is one of the most authentic and charming in Luxembourg City, along with the Clausen and Pfaffenthal districts. Some of the buildings in the Grund are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Neumünster Abbey.
Some of the cobbled streets date back to the 10th century. This is particularly true of the "Bisserwee." Other buildings were constructed in the 14th century.
In summer and winter alike, enjoy the magnificent streets, stone buildings, and ancient bridges. A stroll along the Alzette is very pleasant. Just look up to enjoy a sumptuous view of the heights of the Upper Town and discover details of the historic buildings. It is in the Grund that you can take the prettiest photos of Luxembourg City.
Located in the lower part of the city, you will need to take the Saint-Esprit elevator or walk down the winding cobbled streets to reach the Grund. The walk is charming. Strolling through the Grund allows you to savor the calm and tranquility of this neighborhood.
The Grund follows the meandering course of the Pétrusse river, which flows into the Alzette (Uelzecht) at this point. The neighborhood offers the opportunity for lovely walks and romantic outings, apart from the bustle of the bars and restaurants in the evening. This bucolic spot was highlighted as part of the LUGA 2025 exhibition.
The Grund district is known for its calm and its atmosphere of a preserved small village. The Grund is highly appreciated for its welcoming and peaceful setting, the beauty of its streets and its rustic decor.
The Grund is a great starting point for a walk along the Vauban circuit or a bike ride to Hespérange along the Alzette.
You will find charming places, bars, and restaurants with lovely terraces in summer. The Grund is ideal for going out for a drink or a meal in one of its restaurants.
There are small independent shops, a bed and breakfast, the National Museum of Natural History, and more.

There is little public transport in Le Grund apart from buses 20 and 23. To get to this neighborhood, it is best to take the Saint Esprit elevator or walk up the cobbled Bisserwee Street to reach the upper town.
The neighborhood has many very narrow streets, which can make it difficult to get around. Residents are calling for safer roads for pedestrians and cyclists.
In terms of sports facilities, the Grund has the Pétrusse skatepark, an outdoor fitness area, a multi-sports field, and a mini-golf course.
In addition, walks in the Pétrusse Park are a real pleasure, especially in summer.
In the summer, on the first Sunday of every month, visit the Konscht Am Gronn artists' exhibition.
The Grund district offers an artistic and romantic atmosphere. Its historic character makes it one of the capital's tourist attractions.
Unfortunately, the crowds of tourists who flock there on sunny days cause traffic and noise pollution for the neighborhood's residents. Nevertheless, the Grund remains sheltered from the traffic and hustle and bustle of the city center. However, it is difficult to park there.
