Playgrounds for children in Luxembourg

You’ll find all kinds of play areas for children, called “Spillplatz,” in Luxembourg’s municipalities.

Specially equipped with slides, swings, sandboxes, and climbing frames, these playgrounds will delight your children. Originally intended for children, these parks can also be a great opportunity to meet other parents.

Check with your local municipality—there’s likely a playground nearby!

Municipal parks in Luxembourg for family fun

The City of Luxembourg has several municipal parks, each with its own unique layout. These are beautiful green spaces with fantastic playgrounds. These parks offer incredible places to unwind, whether you want to burn off some energy, go for a walk, or simply relax. You can enjoy them with your family, with the kids, with friends, or on your own. Try them all and pick your favorite!

16 hectares of greenery in the Cloche d'Or neighborhood in Gasperich

The new Ban de Gasperich Municipal Park completes the development of the new Cloche d'Or neighborhood. It is located in the Gasperich neighborhood, right next to Cloche d'Or.

It offers an ideal green setting with a lawn, a pond, and landscaped paths. You can go there to exercise or simply relax with your family thanks to the many play facilities and various landscaped paths. In particular, there is a huge playground for children.

A brasserie with a total capacity of over 150 seats awaits visitors indoors or on its terrace. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2024.

The City of Luxembourg has been awarded a Land Use Planning Prize for this park.

The English Garden, a children’s playground in Luxembourg-Gasperich

The English Garden, located in the historic part of Luxembourg-Gasperich, offers a lovely farm-themed play area for little ones. Children can play there for hours while parents relax and chat with other parents from the neighborhood.

Family walks and fun in the Pétrusse Valley

The Pétrusse Valley is located beneath the Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg City. It separates the Upper Town from the Bourbon Plateau. It can be accessed via the stairs or the Saint Esprit elevator.

The Pétrusse Valley has been developed into a large park for the enjoyment of its residents. The entire area is centered around the Pétrusse stream. The stream originates near Mamer in Luxembourg and flows into the Alzette River in the City of Luxembourg, in the Grund neighborhood.

The Pétrusse Valley is one of the iconic sites of the LUGA 2025 Urban Gardens exhibition.

Pétrusse Parks: Family Walks

The lush Pétrusse parks in the Grund neighborhood offer lovely, easy, and very pleasant walks, whether on foot or by bike.

The Pétrusse Valley is a gathering place and a spot for relaxation for the whole family. It’s the perfect place to go for a jog while the kids ride their bikes. In the summer, you’ll appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the coolness of its trails.

Pétrusse Express Tourist Train, the perfect family outing

The Pétrusse Express is easily recognizable by its apple-green color. This touristtrain takes you on a tour of Luxembourg City, specifically the Lower Town. The tour lasts about an hour and introduces you to the city’s rich history. This short tour is an ideal family outing that avoids any steep hills! Trains depart every 30 minutes from Montée de Clausen near the Bock Casemates.

Facilities in the Pétrusse Valley for all ages

In the Grund district, enjoy the mini-golf course, the miniature train for the little ones, as well as the outdoor fitness area and the skate park. In the Hollerich district, a public basketball court is available.

There is also a huge park for skateboarding.

The Pétrusse Valley also serves as the setting for the famous Duck Race. For the more athletic, you can also explore this green space by running the DKV Urban Trail.

Edouard André Municipal Park: Play pirates and relax with the family

Designed by landscape architect Edouard André in the 1870s, the City of Luxembourg’s superb municipal park offers a fabulous green space. It is ideal for relaxation and well-being for everyone right in the heart of the Upper Town.

Designed as an English garden, this park is located on the city’s former fortified grounds, which were dismantled under the 1867 Treaty of London. Today, this green oasis features shaded areas to cool off in the height of summer. It can be accessed via Avenue Monterey or Avenue de la Porte Neuve.

On the Monterey side, the large, life-size wooden pirate ship is a hit with children. With its giant slide, sandboxes, swings, and water play areas, the Municipal Park is a magical, dream-like place for kids. It’s the perfect spot to spend a fabulous afternoon climbing, jumping, sliding, or splashing around. In the summer, don’t forget your swimsuit!

Here you’ll find a small kiosk selling refreshments and snacks, as well as restrooms.

A huge lawn, the “Kinnekswiss,” invites you to rest and relax or enjoy sports activities. It regularly hosts events and festivals like“Kinnekswiss Loves”… in the summer. In winter, the Kinnekswiss hosts the large ice rink for the Christmas markets.

The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day.

You will also find the Villa Vauban, the City of Luxembourg’s art museum, within this park.

Like the Pétrusse Valley and the Alzette Valley, the Edouard André Municipal Park will be a key part of the LUGA 2025 exhibition showcasing urban gardens.

Merl Park: Fun in the Merl and Belair Neighborhoods

Merl Park is a beautiful 5-hectare park with a pond. It is located near the Luxembourg-Merl and Luxembourg-Belair neighborhoods . It is a favorite gathering spot for moms and kids. It makes for a lovely family outing!

Facilities at Merl Park for families

Merl Park features a large playground for all ages with a big slide (and smaller ones) and swings. For the more athletic, ping-pong tables are available, as well as a basketball court and even a zip line. Large lawns are perfect for playing soccer or having a picnic.

You can ride a bike or rollerblade around the pond or take a stroll with a stroller: the path is paved.

The park’s pond is home to families of ducks, much to the delight of the little ones. A food court also offers the chance to have lunch or enjoy a drink. The City of Luxembourg asks that you not feed bread to the ducks. This is harmful to their health and promotes the growth of algae.

In the middle of the park, the restaurant “Le Pavillon du Parc Belair,” with its terrace overlooking the playground and the pond, is very pleasant, especially since it was recently completely renovated.

Activities at Merl Park for children

Every summer, from July to September, the City of Luxembourg organizes the “Jump for Fun” event with a trampoline park for the whole family to jump around! Be sure to bring non-slip socks. They are also available for purchase on-site.

Note: The park is open until 10 p.m. from April 15 to September 15, and from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the year.

Play princesses and knights in Scheiwisschen Park

Scheiwisschen Park is known as the “Castle Park.” It is also located near the Merl and Belair neighborhoods.

This children’s playground features a large castle. A true fairy-tale castle with a keep, knights, and small farm animals in the village, it captures every child’s imagination. They can climb it, traverse the rope bridges, … though you may sometimes have to rescue them from narrow passages not designed for adults!

Your children can even enjoy the nearby swings. Picnic areas allow you to enjoy sunny days with the family.

Please note: there are no free public restrooms, nor is it possible to buy snacks on site.

Play astronauts and space travelers in Luxembourg-Bonnevoie

Kaltreis Park in Luxembourg-Bonnevoie is designed as a space-themed playground. You’ll find a huge rocket, water play areas, ping-pong tables, and a pétanque court where people of all ages can relax.

Central Park in the Kirchberg district

Parc Central is located in the Kirchberg district of Luxembourg. It is the main green space in this part of the Kirchberg Plateau. This spacious park is situated between the European School I and the D’Coque National Sports and Cultural Center.

Facilities at Central Park for family outings

Central Park features a large pond fed by rainwater and runoff, as well as play areas. There is even a large open-air amphitheater, along with several works of art.

There is also an outdoor restaurant, a sort of snack bar open on sunny days.

What activities are there for children in Central Park?

Central Park offers a breath of fresh air in the heart of the Kirchberg Plateau, a predominantly urban and business-oriented area. Enjoy the vast spaces for relaxation, walks, or sports.

You’ll also find the work “Dendrite” by Canadian artist Michel de Broin in the center of the park’s living maze. You can climb 7 meters up this gigantic yellow staircase to admire the surroundings.

Central Park is also home to the Kirchberg Arboretum, along with the two other parks, Reimerwee and Klosegroendchen.

What could be better for residents or people working in the neighborhood than enjoying a lunch break or an afternoon snack with the family?

Take the opportunity to sip a drink or play a game of pétanque with friends at the Kyosk, the refreshment stand open in the park on sunny days. What a delight to unwind in the evening with an excellent Flammenkueche and watch the sunset from the bohemian-style armchairs and seating areas.

The routeof the ING Night Marathon, a major sporting event in Luxembourg, passes through this beautiful park.

Laval Park, Eich and Weimerskirch neighborhoods

Parc Laval is located in the Eich and Weimerskirch neighborhoods of Luxembourg. Away from the crowded playgrounds of downtown, this large park is a very pleasant place to relax with the family.

Designed in the English style, Laval Park is located near the Alzette River, at the bottom of Eich Hill. As you stroll through the park, you can admire magnificent century-old chestnut trees. In the section left deliberately in its natural state, you can admire some wild orchids. Please note: picking them is prohibited—the species is protected.

The park entrance is located near Place Dargent. Two playgrounds and a multi-sport field are available for visitors of all ages.

Tony Neuman Garden, a relaxing spot in Limpertsberg

Alphonse Hollman, tasked with creating an arboretum in the park of the villa owned by the president of Arbed, designed the Tony Neuman Garden in 1946. This wooded and flower-filled park, which is very well maintained, is notable for its monumental trees, such as redwoods.

The park also features large grassy areas for relaxation and a playground for children. This park is located in the Limpertsberg neighborhood.

Modern sculptures, some created by renowned local artists, adorn this garden and give it its unique character.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Limpertsberg was known for its rose gardens and fields of roses exported all over the world and to the great European courts. Today, the Rose Trail offered by the Luxembourg City Tourist Office allows visitors to wander the streets of Limpertsberg to discover its hidden treasures, including Tony Neuman Park.

The area is very peaceful because it is not very crowded. The main entrance is on Avenue de la Faïencerie near number 162A.

Daycare centers should offer outdoor activities for your children. Be sure to check this when visiting childcare facilities for your child.

Family Fruit Picking at the Steinsel Orchards

Looking for a more rustic activity for your children? Pick seasonal fruit yourself in the Steinsel Orchards! Every year, the Steinsel Orchards cooperative invites families and children to pick apples or mirabelle plums straight from the trees.

This outdoor activity, close to nature, is fun for the whole family. You can show your children the beauty of Luxembourg’s orchards and let them enjoy picking their own apples!

Plus, fresh-pressed fruit juice is offered to visitors. So don’t hesitate! Take the opportunity to stock up on different varieties of apples at a reasonable price.

During the season, on Rue de Luxembourg in Bridel, a sign points the way to the orchards.

Forests and Walking Trails Around Luxembourg

Did you know that the City of Luxembourg offers lovely walks and fitness trails in its municipal forests, right on the city’s outskirts?

Luxembourg’s forests are beautiful in every season. They’re a wonderful place for children to play and explore. Plan a trip to pick lily of the valley on May 1st.

However, during hunting season—from mid-October to around the end of January—be sure to wear clothing that is sufficiently visible to hunters. Hunting areas are generally marked along roadsides or at forest entrances. So please be careful.

Bambësch Forest: A Place to Relax with the Family

North of Luxembourg City, accessible via the Muhlenbach neighborhood, the large municipal Bambësch Forest offers a green space for relaxation for all Luxembourg residents.

Discovering the City of Luxembourg at Bambësch Park

Bambësch Park presents the history of Luxembourg City through various play structures. There is even a replica of the Trois Glands Museum. Water features and shaded areas provide spots to cool off in the summer.

Hiking and fitness trails in the forest

Numerous hiking and nature trails are available for walkers. Clearly marked for routes ranging from 4.6 to 7.5 km, the starting points are located along bus line 21 at Rollingergrund or line 275 toward Kopstal.

For the more athletic, a 2.7-km fitness trail with 18 exercise stations is available. A 5.5-km cross-country trail is offered for the more adventurous. The starting point is located near the Bambesch Leisure Center parking lot on Rue de Bridel.

The Bambësch Sports Center features a magnificent playground for children, a tennis club, and a soccer field. Locker rooms and showers are available free of charge!

Kockelscheuer Forest: walks and family sports activities

The Kockelscheuer Forest is located south of Luxembourg City, past the Gasperich and Cloche d’Or neighborhoods. To reach the Kockelscheuer Forest, the main entrance is near the Kockelscheuer ice rink (Bus Line 18).

You can explore the woods on foot or even by mountain bike if your children are older. The path along the pond is stroller-friendly. Barbecue and picnic areas, along with a small playground, welcome families. A 2.75-km fitness trail awaits you there, featuring 14 exercise stations.

Is your family into sports? Don’t miss the CK Center, which features bowling, tennis courts, badminton, and paddle tennis. The Lux Golf Center also offers facilities for golf training and lessons.

Do you love golf? Don’t miss out on this opportunity for relaxation and fun.

Walks in the Hamm / Bonnevoie Area

In the Hamm, Pulvermuehl, and Bonnevoie neighborhoods, you’ll also find several walking trails perfect for the whole family.

The 2-kmGodchaux Circuit, a testament to Luxembourg’s industrial past, takes you through the Alzette Valley from Bonnevoie to Hamm , where you’ll discover the history of Luxembourg’s textile industry, including the Villa Godchaux, the Schlaifmillen Workshop, and the former working-class neighborhoods along Rue Godchaux.

The Ecureuil Trail is 5.3 km long, starting near the crematorium in the Hamm neighborhood, and the Tilleul Trail is 6.9 km long, with starting points located on bus lines 5 or 6 on the Bonnevoie side, on bus line 15 on the Hamm side, and on lines 7 or 29 on the Pulvermühl side.

Two fitness trails—one 2.9 km (18 stations) and the other 2.6 km (13 stations)—are also available on the Bonnevoie side for the first one and in the Cents and Neudorf/Weimershof neighborhoods for the second.

On a different note, have you heard of the Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg? It combines fun and learning for the little ones.

Bike rides along the Alzette Valley

The Alzette Valley follows the course of the Alzette, one of Luxembourg’s two main rivers. It originates in France, passes through Esch-sur-Alzette in the south of the country, crosses the City of Luxembourg, and flows into the Sûre in the north.

The Alzette Valley offers nature lovers charming walks or bike rides to enjoy with the family.

With children, you can start from the Grund in Luxembourg City, on Bisserwee Street, and follow the roughly 10-kilometer bike path that runs along the Alzette to the town of Hesperange. Stop halfway along the route at the “Millen” (mill) near the small bridge. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic.

There you’ll also see the sculpture of Melusine, reinterpreted by Sege Ecker, as well as the Kloutschtergaart, a very pretty terraced garden. Learn about the Luxembourgish legend of Melusine.

For the more athletic, you can head north from Béreldange in the municipality of Walferdange and follow Cycle Route 15 to Ettelbrück. These 31 km will take you into the Luxembourg Ardennes. You’ll pass magnificent castles, including Colmar-Berg, the residence of the Grand Ducal family.
