Scouting organizations for your children

Do you live in Luxembourg and want to give your children the opportunity to meet other young people their age, form lasting bonds, and thrive outside of school? Scouting offers an educational, social, and formative experience.

Well-established in the Grand Duchy, Scouting plays an essential role in the personal development of children and teenagers. It fosters independence, a sense of responsibility, and civic engagement, while helping to build genuine friendships.

Why enroll your child in a Scouting program in Luxembourg?

Scouting offers a reassuring and structured environment for children and young people, particularly valued by expat families seeking a sense of belonging and local integration.

  • Development of self-confidence and independence
  • Learning teamwork
  • Respect for others and the environment
  • Easier social integration, especially for newly arrived children
  • Time away from screens in favor of hands-on, group activities

In a multicultural country like Luxembourg, these activities also help children integrate more easily and practice different languages on a daily basis.

Scouting in Luxembourg: History and Organization

Scouting has been present in Luxembourg for over a century. The first group was founded in 1914, shortly after the movement was established by Baden-Powell.

Today, the country has more than 8,000 young people involved in Scouting, spread across numerous local units throughout the country.

Since 2019, H.R.H. Grand Duke Guillaume has served as Chief Scout of Luxembourg Scouting in Luxembourg (SIL), uniting the two federations, FNEL and Lëtzebuerger Guiden a Scouten (LGS), thereby continuing the Grand Ducal family’s historic commitment.

The Values of Scouting in Luxembourg

Regardless of which Scout movement you choose for your child, the fundamental values remain the same:

  • Gradual empowerment of children and adolescents
  • Team spirit and solidarity
  • Respect for nature and environmental awareness
  • Openness to others and tolerance
  • Personal development and civic engagement

These values come to life in a supportive environment where every child can grow at their own pace.

What activities are available for Scouts in Luxembourg?

Scouting activities emphasize hands-on experience and group life. They allow children to develop useful skills while having fun.

  • Team games and outdoor activities
  • Hikes and nature camps
  • Camping and self-reliance
  • Orienteering
  • Introduction to first aid
  • Community service projects and civic engagement

Meetings are usually held on weekends, supplemented by camps during school breaks.

How to choose the right Scouting movement for your child?

The choice depends on several criteria:

  • Language spoken (French, English, Luxembourgish, Portuguese…)
  • Geographical proximity to the group
  • Affiliation (secular or religious)
  • Child’s age

It is often recommended to attend a trial session so your child can get a feel for the atmosphere and see if it’s a good fit.

A valuable opportunity for expat families

For expatriate children, Scouting serves as a powerful tool for integration. It allows them to:

  • Quickly build social connections
  • Adapt to a new cultural environment
  • To build confidence in a context that can sometimes be unsettling

It’s also a space where they can be themselves, away from academic or language challenges.
