Villerupt Italian Film Festival - France

For its 46th edition, the Italian Film Festival in Villerupt (France) delighted Italian film fans from October 27 to November 12, 2023. 

The dates for the 2024 event are not yet known.

The 2023 Villerupt Film Festival is going all out for Italian film fans. More than 70 films will be screened in 6 cinemas in 4 towns . To take part in this festival, they can choose from over 250 screenings, scheduled over 17 days of the festival.

Under the theme "Miracle in Milan", spectators will be able to immerse themselves in the very special atmosphere of Italian films. Joy, dolce vita, sunshine and realism will all be present in this feel-good festival. A special tribute will be paid to the great Italian director Ettore Scola.

Every year, the Villerupt Italian Film Festival attracts some 40,000 people of all ages and nationalities. The festival offers a unique opportunity to discover films not usually shown in traditional Luxembourg cinemas.

During this festival, authors and actors often come in person to present their cinematographic works.

The history of the Villerupt Italian Film Festival

The first edition of the Villerupt Italian Film Festival took place in 1976, on the initiative of a small group of young Italian film enthusiasts. In the past, the Villerupt region of Lorraine (France ) had been home to many Italian migrants, who had settled there to work in the mining industry.

For this first edition, the film festival was hosted by the Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture in Villerupt. For its grand premiere, the festival presented some twenty Italian films in their original version with French subtitles. The festival lasted five days.

But due to the Italian film crisis and organizational constraints, the festival was discontinued in 1983. It wasn't until 1998 that it was revived. Today, the Villerupt Italian Film Festival is an unmissable event for film buffs in the Greater Region.
