Terra Coop is an AMAP (Association pour le Maintien de l'Agriculture Paysanne, or Association for the Preservation of Small-Scale Farming) in Luxembourg, on Rue Eicherfeld. Terra Coop also sells its market garden produce, grown using ecological and regenerative methods, at the Bonnevoie market.

But Terra Coop also offers people who don't have a garden the opportunity to actively participate in growing vegetables and fruit. Don't have time to grow your own fruit and vegetables? No problem, you can become a member and enjoy fresh, local produce. All you have to do is become a member of the association and pay a membership fee. Buying in bulk in Luxembourg

Buying in bulk is not yet very widespread in Luxembourg, except of course in local markets. Some retailers even offer returnable containers to encourage reuse.

Bulk sections in supermarkets

Nevertheless, more and more supermarkets and mini-markets are offering bulk product sections. You can buy both food and non-food products. Prices are not always lower than you might expect. In addition, some butcher and cheese counters will serve food in your own containers. Remember to take them with you when you go shopping, along with your reusable bags.

In terms of stores specializing in zero waste, we would like to highlight the wonderful fair trade initiative of Buttek-Mosaïk in Filsdorf, run by volunteers. Open Monday through Thursday, the store donates its profits to the Action pour un Monde Uni association.

Co-labor stores also offer bulk products.

Promoting green mobility and energy

Consuming more responsibly is not limited to food. In order to preserve our planet and reduce our ecological footprint, travel can be rethought with soft mobility.

Our energy consumption can also be greener. Luxembourg energy suppliers are increasingly offering clean energy. The Enovos Group supplies green electricity and climate-neutral natural gas throughout the Grand Duchy. Its subsidiary , Luxembourg Energy Office (LEO), also supplies the city of Luxembourg with green energy.

Gielt-Band – Yellow ribbon: "You can pick here"

If you see a yellow ribbon on a tree with the words "You can pick here," feel free to pick the fruit from the tree.

Launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Sylvicol (Union of Luxembourg Municipalities), this initiative aims to reduce waste and promote solidarity by allowing free picking for personal use.

Community gardens in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a city where prices per square meter are high. As a result, many people do not have a private garden in which to plant or grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and other crops.

To remedy this, the City of Luxembourg and an increasing number of municipalities are offering an original and innovative concept: community gardens!

Grow your own fruit and vegetables even if you don't have a garden

Created for people who do not have a private garden, community gardens allow you to grow flowers, vegetables, herbs, and fruit at a very reasonable price.

First established in 2013 in Luxembourg City in the Bonnevoie district, community gardens are now more widespread. The districts of Limpertsberg, the Pétrusse Valley, and Pfaffenthal also offer community gardens to their residents.

These community gardens were highlighted as part of the Urban History Festival 2024 in Bonnevoie.

Each community garden consists of a "communal" area and several "private" plots of land. These plots can be cultivated alone, with family, or with friends. The individual plots measure approximately 4 meters by 2 meters and allow for the cultivation of several crops.

Environmentally friendly meeting places

Another important criterion for community gardens in the City of Luxembourg is that cultivation must be carried out in an ecological and environmentally friendly manner. Pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and GMOs are prohibited. Compost bins are also available.

Exclusively reserved for residents of the neighborhoods in which they are located, these gardens are created with sustainable economy in mind. The aim is also to create a friendly atmosphere among friends and neighbors. Picnic tables are available.

In addition, the city of Luxembourg offers each resident who rents a plot training provided by a professional gardener, in order to optimize the cultivation of their land.

Are you interested in community gardens?

Are you interested in the concept and would like to have a plot of land to cultivate a garden? Contact your local council to find out if any plots are available.

You can also visit the Eise gaart website , the portal for community vegetable gardens in Luxembourg. The site presents the shared gardens in Luxembourg and how to join them. You will also find information on ecological gardening and a calendar of events in and around vegetable gardens nationwide. Produced in partnership with CELL – Center for Ecological Learning Luxembourg, the site is available in French, English, and German.

Eco-friendly events and initiatives

"Green Event" labels

Under the impetus of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity, Luxembourg is committed to an eco-responsible approach, including in the organization of events. Organizers of events labeled "Green Event" are committed to reducing the ecological footprint of the event in question.

The Duck Race is a "Green Event." Don't hesitate to take part!

Nature clean-up initiatives

If you care about the cleanliness of your environment, help make nature cleaner with the "Grouss Botz" or big clean-up.

Repairing broken items

Want to give your broken items a second life but don't have any DIY skills? Repair Cafés are a must-visit!

In addition to the friendly atmosphere, you'll find volunteers who can help you repair almost anything: appliances, furniture, bicycles, toys, clothing, and more.

Ask your local council for more information.

There are many ways to get involved in preserving our planet. One way to pollute less and reduce our ecological footprint is to try out soft mobility.
