Travel by taxi, private hire vehicle, or on-demand transportation

Whether you’re an expat, a new resident, or just visiting Luxembourg, it’s essential to understand the private transportation options available to you. Taxis, ride-hailing services, and other on-demand transportation options make it easy to get around the country. Here’s everything you need to know to get around safely and affordably in Luxembourg.

Taking a Taxi in Luxembourg

Rules to follow for Luxembourg taxis

Taxis are a convenient way to get around Luxembourg. But before you get in, it’s important to know certain rules that taxi drivers must follow.

Required elements for official taxis

  • Taxi zone sign:Officialtaxismust display a taxi zone sign visible from the outside on their windshield, showing the registration number and license type.
  • Taxi fare chart: visible to passengers, the taxi fare chart displays the taxi’s rates, the name of the taxi operator, its license with validity information, etc.
  • Driver’s ID card displayed during working hours
  • Yellow and black illuminated “TAXI” sign on the roof of official taxis.

Pickup and Drop-off

Taxis can pick you up and drop you off at any location upon request. You can therefore hail a taxi anywhere on the street, provided you are at least 50 meters away from a taxi stand.

To get from one place to another, the taxi must take the shortest route. If you have a preferred route, let the driver know.

A driver cannot refuse a short trip. However, they may refuse a long trip or a trip abroad. Taxi drivers may also refuse a customer who is intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, behaving inappropriately, or whose hygiene is questionable.

Taxismay refuse to transport animals, with the exception of service dogs.

Where can you find a taxi stand in Luxembourg?

Taxi stands are strategically located in key areas of the city. You’ll find them in many places, including:

Here you will find an interactive map of taxi stands in the city of Luxembourg.

At taxi stands, you are not required to take the first taxi in line. Taxis, however, are required to follow the order of the line and give priority to the taxis at the front of the line.

How to book a taxi by phone or online

Want to take a taxi from your home or a specific location?

  • By phone: Contact a taxi company directly
  • Online: Book via the company’s website. To avoid any stress before a train or flight departure, be sure to book in advance to get to the train station or Luxembourg-Findel Airport.

If you have one or more young children, please mention this in advance when booking the ride. The driver can provide a suitable child car seat.

Also make sure the vehicle is equipped to transport bulky luggage or special items such as a stroller.

Transportation for people with disabilities using wheelchairs is made easier thanks to the Adapto solution (see below).

Private Hire and On-Demand Transportation Services

Since 2024, chauffeur-driven car services and on-demand transportation services have grown significantly in Luxembourg.

Private hire platforms available in Luxembourg

  • WebTaxi: offered by Emile Weber, a transportation specialist in Luxembourg, this service is recognizable by its white and orange taxis.
  • LetzRide: LetzRide offers a 100% Luxembourg-based solution. This ride-hailing platform is supported by local transport providers (Sales-Lentz, Demy Schandeler, Josy Clément) via a downloadable mobile app. Rides can be booked in a car or a van.
  • Uber Luxembourg: Since June 2024 , the Uber app has been available in Luxembourg through the company Webtaxi (Emile Weber). Prices are lower than those of traditional taxis.
  • Independent Drivers: Some independent drivers hold a taxi license and offer customized services .

You can book a car directly with independent drivers who hold a valid taxi license.

Taxi and ride-hailing rates in Luxembourg

Taxi costs

Taxi fares are not regulated in Luxembourg. Each driver sets their own prices.

In practice, taxi fares are very high in Luxembourg. Expect to pay between 30 and 50 euros, or even more, for a 10-kilometer trip.

On-demand ride-hailing services like Uber, WebTaxi, or LetzRide are generally cheaper than traditional taxi services. You can see the prices upfront when booking the service via the app. Ride-hailing services (Uber, LetzRide) often provide a price estimate in advance, making them a more predictable and often more economical option.

Price Display

Prices must be clearly displayed on the outside of the car, on the rear passenger side, and inside, at the front of the vehicle. Before getting into the taxi, make sure the rates are clearly displayed. The driver must also be able to provide you with a copy of their rates upon request.

Taxi Meter

The meter must be turned on at the start of the ride. The taxi driver cannot charge you more than the displayed fare. The meter will be reset to zero once the fare is paid.

Payment methods

Accepted payment methods must be specified. Always ask for a receipt at the end of the ride. This will serve as proof in case of a dispute. Keep it.

Shuttle services and specific services

Municipal Shuttles

Some municipalities in Luxembourg offer on-demand shuttle services to residents within the municipality. This service has been available free of charge since the introduction of free public transportation in 2020.

To take advantage of this, contact the municipal services in your place of residence.

The municipalities around Findel Airport, in the municipality of Sandweiler, even offer a direct route to drop off or pick up passengers.

Adapto: On-demand transportation for people with reduced mobility

Adapto is a taxi-bus service designed for people with long-term mobility impairments who cannot travel on their own or via public transportation.

This service is reserved for occasional trips. It is available only to holders of a specific access card. This card must be requested in advance from the Department of Transportation.

For more information: Adapto service or guichet.lu.

Alternatives to taxis and ride-hailing services

Remember that public transportation is free in Luxembourg. Buses, trams, and trains allow you to travel easily and affordably throughout the country.
