The must-attend ACL day for motorcyclists
Getting back on the road after several years without riding is never a trivial matter. In Luxembourg, where the roads are as beautiful as they are challenging, motorcycle safety remains a top priority. With this in mind, the ACL offers advanced motorcycle training courses accessible to riders of all skill levels.
And having experienced it recently, I can say that this day was much more than just a training course: it was a real confidence booster.
Getting back on a motorcycle after a long break: a real need for training
I got my motorcycle license over 30 years ago. However, between living abroad and work commitments, I only rode for a few years. And since moving to Luxembourg over 10 years ago, my motorcycle had been… sitting idle.
Last year, the urge came back. The urge to hit the road again, to feel that unique sense of freedom once more, and to fully enjoy the Luxembourg landscapes.
But very quickly, reality set in: lack of reflexes, loss of confidence, apprehension… Getting back on the bike without guidance was a real risk.
That’s when I discovered, as a member of the ACL—Automobile Club du Luxembourg—the existence of one-day motorcycle refresher courses. A practical, accessible, and reassuring solution.
ACL Motorcycle Training: Safety First
From the moment I arrived, the tone was set: here, safety is not an option.
On the track, near the city of Luxembourg, I found the instruction to be particularly high-quality: one instructor for every two riders. A rare ratio, allowing for personalized guidance.
First surprise: even before we start, a technical inspection of the motorcycle. In my case, the tire pressure was too low… impossible to continue without fixing it. The instructor takes the time, explains, and adjusts.
A minor detail? Not really. It’s actually telling: the training begins before you even get on the bike.
Even today, this vigilance reflects European statistics: motorized two-wheelers account for about 20% of road deaths despite representing less than 5% of traffic. Hence the importance of prevention and ongoing training, even for experienced riders.
A comprehensive motorcycle training program: theory, practice, and personalized support
The day begins with a theory session lasting about an hour. The goal: to review technical fundamentals, best practices, and safety reflexes.
Contrary to what I had imagined, the group is very diverse: some ride regularly, others are getting back into it, like me. This mix creates an interesting and enriching dynamic.
Then it’s time for the practical session.
For several hours, we go through a series of exercises on the track:
- low-speed control
- trajectory control
- emergency braking
- obstacle avoidance
The afternoon continues at the same pace, alternating between technical instruction and practical application.
The result: a packed, demanding day… but one that’s extremely formative.
Before hitting the road, be sure to check the ACL’s safety checklist for your trips and vacations.
ACL Maison du Motard: a community committed to safety and the joy of riding
Beyond training, the ACL brings together a true community of enthusiasts around the Maison du Motard.
Events, guided rides, motorcycle trips, additional training… everything is designed to support riders over the long term.
But the ambition goes further:
- promoting responsible riding
- strengthening coexistence among road users
- improving the image of motorcyclists
An approach that makes sense in a country like Luxembourg, where heavy traffic and the diversity of road users require vigilance and mutual respect.
And if you’re thinking about getting new gear or switching motorcycles, events like Autofestival can also be an opportunity worth exploring.
My take on this motorcycle training in Luxembourg: confidence restored and enjoyment intact
At the end of the day, the conclusion is clear: I’m back in the saddle… but above all, I’ve regained my confidence.
Beyond technical skills, it’s a mindset you regain: greater fluidity, greater vigilance, and above all, greater peace of mind.
The coaching team, passionate and approachable, conveys much more than just advice: a culture of safety and camaraderie.
And the group atmosphere also plays a key role. Among riders, bonds form quickly.
Like many other participants, I plan to repeat the experience, particularly with the on-road sessions offered by the ACL.
Whether you’re an occasional rider, a recent expat, or an experienced rider, this type of training has a place in your journey.
A nod to thrill-seekers and those with a biker spirit… fans of the Joe Bar Team will get it 😉
