Buying a vehicle in Luxembourg

Electric cars and gasoline-powered cars

Luxembourg is committed to the green revolution. By 2025, European vehicle regulations are shifting toward a more nuanced approach than initially planned. While the goal of reducing CO₂ emissions remains central, with a key deadline set for 2035, the European Union is no longer moving toward a strict ban on combustion engines.

The priority is now on significantly reducing their environmental impact, leaving the door open to alternatives such as synthetic fuels or certain hybrid powertrains. In practical terms, this means that internal combustion engine vehicles will not disappear in the short term, but will have to comply with much stricter emissions standards.

For expats, who are often in the process of settling in or replacing their vehicles, this gradual transition calls for planning more sustainable mobility choices, while taking into account local realities regarding infrastructure and taxation.

How can you drive more sustainably in Luxembourg?

Where can you buy a new car?

There are several options for buying a vehicle in Luxembourg, whether new or used.

Buying a vehicle from car dealerships

Luxembourg registers more than 40,000 vehicles each year. While gasoline-powered vehicles still account for more than a third of registrations, sales of electric vehicles are on the rise compared to diesel vehicles.

In terms of brands, German-made vehicles—led by Volkswagen, followed by BMW, Mercedes, and Audi—are the best-selling cars.

Car dealerships sell both new and used vehicles.

You can also take advantage of the annual used car market.

Vehicle Inspection in Luxembourg

Types of vehicles subject to technical inspection

Vehicles registered in Luxembourg must be covered by a valid technical inspection certificate.

The first technical inspection for cars, motorcycles, and trailers weighing more than 750 kg and less than 3,500 kg takes place 4 years after the vehicle is first put into service.
The second technical inspection takes place two years later, i.e., six years after the vehicle was first put into service. Thereafter, subsequent inspections must be conducted annually.

Trailers weighing less than 750 kg must have a compliance sticker, which can be obtained from the SNCA.

Vehicles manufactured before 1950 are not subject to technical inspection.

So-called “historic” vehicles must undergo a technical inspection every two years. “Historic vehicles” are vehicles built or first registered more than 30 years ago, where the specific model is no longer produced and has not undergone major modifications. The new regulations do not change the status of vehicles previously classified as historic, i.e., after 25 years.

Technical Inspection Procedure

You can have your mandatory technical inspection performed at:

  • the SNCT – Société Nationale de Contrôle Technique in Sandweiler,
  • DEKRA or LUKS-approved organizations
  • partner garages.

The documents you need to present to the SNCT at your appointment are available on the SNCT website.

To have your vehicle inspected, you must make an appointment in advance. Please arrive at the inspection center at your scheduled time. You can make or change your appointment online via the SNCT website or through the other organizations listed above.
You will then simply need to follow the instructions of the staff on site.

More information: www.snct.lu or tel : +352 35 72 14-222

Please note! There is a fee for the technical inspection.

Your vehicle may also be inspected in the event of an accident or major repairs, if the vehicle undergoes modifications such as tuning, etc., or at the request of the authorities.

Vehicles in Luxembourg and winter regulations

Winter tires are mandatory in Luxembourg

Winters can be harsh in Luxembourg. That is why Luxembourg has made so-called “winter tires” or “all-season tires” mandatory. They make it easierto drive on Luxembourg roads in winter conditions, such as black ice, packed snow, slush, patches of ice, or frost.

This regulation applies to all vehicles crossing the Luxembourg border, whether driven by residents or non-residents. Cross-border workers are also subject to this regulation, as are occasional visitors.

Previously, this measure applied from November 1 to March 31. Today, there is no longer a specific date range. However, violators risk a fine if stopped during a traffic stop and their vehicle is not properly equipped for winter conditions.

In cases of weather conditions that pose a risk to traffic, the government may also urge the public to avoid non-essential travel. Everyone then receives an alert message on their Luxembourg mobile phone.

Legal Requirements for Vehicles in Winter

Additionally, in the event of snowfall or very low temperatures, be sure to clear your vehicle of all snow and ice from the windows, windshield, and rear window. Visibility from inside the vehicle must be unobstructed. Your license plate must also be completely clear.

In the event of snow, residents must clear the sidewalks in front of their homes to prevent falls.

Furthermore, it is illegal to leave the engine of a stationary vehicle running to warm it up or defrost the windows. As with the previous cases, these violations are punishable by law. Offenders may be fined.

Remember, driving in Luxembourg requires compliance with the traffic code. Review the driving rules in Luxembourg.
