Housing for students and interns

Are you going to continue your studies in Luxembourg or have you been offered an internship at the European institutions or a company in Luxembourg? Congratulations!

Now you need to find accommodation for the duration of your internship or studies. Here are a few tips to help you find accommodation in Luxembourg as a student.

Student accommodation in university residences

Accommodation reserved for UNI students in Luxembourg

University residences offer accommodation at preferential rates. However, these are reserved for students enrolled at the University of Luxembourg.

To be eligible for accommodation in a university residence, students must be enrolled in a full-time bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. Students enrolled for one semester at the University of Luxembourg as part of an exchange program or as a "free mover" may also apply for student accommodation.

UNI university residences, available accommodation

The University has more than thirty residences located throughout the country, close to the university campuses. It provides more than 1,000 accommodation units for its students.

The accommodation is very varied. Students can benefit from a furnished 15 m² room with shared or private kitchen and bathroom facilities at a lower rate. Single students can also rent a 24 m² studio apartment, while couples can have accommodation of up to 35 m².

The university residences benefit from a cleaning service for the common areas. A vacuum cleaner is also available for students to use.

University residence rates and conditions

The University of Luxembourg offers lease agreements for 5 to 7 months. The lease can be extended if the student re-enrolls at the university. However, the maximum stay cannot exceed the duration of the studies.

Given the shortage of university housing and high demand (6,700 students at the university), the maximum rental period is limited to the normal duration of studies:

  • 36 months for a bachelor's degree
  • 24 months for a master's degree
  • 24 months for a doctorate, even if the duration of studies for a doctoral student is 48 months.

The rates are very attractive and the accommodation is furnished. Prices vary between €400 and over €1,000 per month. The rent includes various charges, namely water, electricity, and heating consumption. High-speed internet connection is also included in the rent.

As with any rental property, student tenants must pay a deposit before moving in. This deposit is equivalent to one month's rent and must be paid by bank transfer. In addition, a security deposit must be paid. This is €350 for rooms and €500 for studios.

It is compulsory to take out home insurance with an insurance company approved in Luxembourg. The University of Luxembourg offers comprehensive home insurance. This is taken out for a period of one year, from September to September. It covers various risks such as fire, water damage, glass breakage, and personal liability. Students can take out this insurance directly online at Allia.lu.

Applications for university housing can be made online, directly on the University of Luxembourg website. However, the application is only final after the student has paid the deposit. Housing is allocated based on the applicant's file by the Student Life and Studies Department (SEVE).
