Nurses – Home Care

You can benefit from medical procedures and care at home such as injections, sutures or post-operative staples to be removed, blood tests, changes of dressings or bandages, …

You may be reimbursed for the cost of this medical care with a doctor’s prescription and under certain conditions.

You can find the list of independent home nurses on the website infirmiere.lu.

Several companies are also authorized to intervene for all medical care at home, but also for domestic help to the elderly, dependent or disabled people such as help with body hygiene, elimination, nutrition, clothing, mobility. This care will be covered by the dependency insurance once the file has been examined beforehand. Among the companies authorized to perform this care are:

  • Help Syrdall Heem
  • Help.lu
  • the Stëftung Hëllef Doheem foundation, the largest network of home help and care in Luxembourg.
  • Verbandskecht.

Do you want to work as a nurse? It is a regulated profession in Luxembourg. To work as a nurse, you must have a diploma recognized by the Ministry of Health.

Are you already a nurse? A nursing diploma issued by a country other than the Grand Duchy may be recognized upon request and under certain conditions. More information here.

Laboratories – medical analysis and blood tests

Do you have medical tests or a blood test to perform? You can visit the laboratories in Luxembourg at your convenience. From Covid, it is recommended to make appointments in advance. For more information on opening hours and procedures, please call in advance or visit the laboratory’s website.

Medical analysis expenses can also be covered by health insurance companies and mutual health insurance companies .

For your blood tests you can go to private laboratories or to the National Health Laboratory, a public establishment located in Dudelange, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.

Covid screening test

In order to detect a possible Covid infection, you can opt for rapid antigenic tests, a PCR test or a serological test.

Antigen self-tests can be performed by anyone using the self-tests recommended in Luxembourg. If the test is positive, it must be reported on covidtesting.lu.

In other cases, you will need to call a laboratory or a PCR testing station, recognizable by its white tents. It is preferable to make an appointment in advance.

In case of a positive test, a follow-up is organized by the Ministry of Health. The institution that performed the test makes the necessary declarations to the administrations.

You will then receive a quarantine order that you will have to respect. The quarantine is done at home.


HIV – AIDS test

HIV testing is anonymous and free .


HIV tests can be performed at several hospitals in the country: CHL, Emile Mayrisch or at the hospital in Ettelbrück.

A mobile DIMPS unit created in collaboration with the CHL and the Ministry of Health also makes it possible to reach out to the population. Provided by the Red Cross, this service promotes the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and promotes good sexual health.

The objective is to expand free and anonymous testing for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis C to “at risk” populations and also to any interested person.

Become a blood donor

Do you want to help the sick or injured? Hospitals are always looking for blood donors, especially if you are a rare donor.

In Luxembourg, if you want to give blood, you have to go to the Red Cross. Indeed, it is the only Luxembourg institution authorized to collect blood from donors at the Centre de Transfusions Sanguines in Luxmebourg.

How to give blood in Luxembourg?

To become a donor in Luxembourg, you must make a specific request for registration in order to be included in the “Donor Register”.
Only people who are registered in the Blood Donor Registry can give blood. To register, there are several options: complete the online blood donation form, visit or contact the Red Cross,
After an interview, a few administrative steps and a medical examination, you will be registered as an official donor in Luxembourg.

To be a donor in Luxembourg, some conditions are mandatory:

  • be between 18 and 60 years old ,
  • weigh at least 50kg
  • be healthy.

How often should I give blood?

Once registered in the Donor Registry, you will be invited to give blood 3 or 4 times a year.
To do so, please bring your invitation, your donor card and/or ID card as well as the completed follow-up questionnaire that will have been distributed to you upon your arrival. You will be taken for a donation, either of whole blood (lasting 6 to 12 minutes depending on the donor), or of plasma or platelets (lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes).
