Language learning for adults
Multilingualism is ubiquitous in Luxembourg, whether in everyday life or at work. No matter the situation, you should expect to speak a different language or be addressed in a language other than your native tongue.
To integrate as effectively as possible in Luxembourg, it is important to speak several languages. And proficiency in foreign languages is a genuine policy priority aimed at integrating newcomers as quickly as possible. Those interested in learning new languages have every resource at their disposal to do so.
A wide range of language learning providers in Luxembourg
The range of language courses available in Luxembourg is very extensive, whether through public integration agencies or private institutions.
The INLL, a key player in language learning
The National Institute of Languages of Luxembourg (INLL) is a key player in language learning in Luxembourg. For a very modest annual fee, you can learn up to 8 languages, including Luxembourgish , German, French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, with certifications included. There’s no excuse not to integrate into Luxembourg’s diverse communities!
Nearly 17,000 registrations were recorded for the 2024–2025 academic year, with a notable increase in national and international certifications (+9.5%).
The INLL is notably the service provider selected by the Employment Development Agency (ADEM) to help job seekers boost their employability through intensive professional language courses (Luxembourgish, German, English, French).
Places at the INLL are in high demand. Be sure to register in advance. Sessions run on a semester basis.
French remains the most popular language, followed by Luxembourgish.
Private providers for language learning in Luxembourg
You will also find many private companies in Luxembourg offering language courses on an individual basis, either inter-company or in-house.
These companies, which specialize in language learning, also typically organize intensive language camps for children during school breaks in French, German, or English.
Although more expensive than the INLL, this option allows you to learn a language more quickly through intensive courses.
Learning Luxembourgish
Learning Luxembourgish is an important step toward local integration.
Luxembourgish is one of the three official languages in Luxembourg. Proficiency in the language is essential for obtaining Luxembourgish citizenship, as this requires passing a written and oral Luxembourgish test.
Here are some basic Luxembourgish phrases to help you integrate more easily.
