Oldtimer vs. Youngtimer
Differences between an Oldtimer and a Youngtimer
To be considered an Oldtimer, a vehicle must be over 30 years old from its date of first registration. It must also be preserved in a condition close to its original state, without major modifications or modernizations. Oldtimer vehicles are prized by collectors for their historical value and rarity.
A Youngtimer, on the other hand, is between 20 and 30 years old. These cars could be described as pre-collectible vehicles. Although still relatively modern, Youngtimers are primarily valued for their potential to become Oldtimers. They often combine impressive performance with a certain vintage charm. Youngtimers are more affordable than Oldtimers.
Today, more than 12,000 “oldtimers” and 15,000 “youngtimers” are on the roads in Luxembourg. Want to learn more? You can find more information about classic cars on the oldtimer.lu website .
Insuring a vehicle over 20 years old in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, there are specific insurance policies for Oldtimers. These policies are often offered at competitive rates since they cover vehicles that generally don’t get much use. Owners mainly participate in events and occasional drives.
Conversely, youngtimers do not always benefit from the same favorable terms. Their insurance is often more similar to that of standard vehicles, but with a specific valuation based on their rarity or condition.
Vehicle inspection in Luxembourg for classic cars
Classic cars are subject to a simplified technical inspection, every 5 years instead of every 2 years for a standard vehicle or a modern classic.
Other important things to know about classic cars
If you’re looking to purchase a vehicle over 20 years old in Luxembourg, here are some important things to know.
First, historic vehicles or classic cars can be registered with a special “H” (historic) license plate. This registration offers advantages. However, it requires limiting the vehicle’s use to specific events, drives, or occasional trips. Additionally, the vehicle must remain in its original condition.
Before buying a classic car, it is strongly recommended that you have a technical inspection performed by a professional or an organization such as the ACL. They will check the vehicle’s overall condition (chassis, engine, corrosion, etc.). This will help you better assess its true value and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Also make sure the seller has the certificate of conformity and maintenance records. An up-to-date maintenance logbook increases confidence in the vehicle, especially for youngtimers.
Additionally, keep in mind that older vehicles sometimes require specific parts that are hard to find. Check on availability and potential costs before purchasing.
