Discover your future school: open house

Discover your future school: open house

Thinking about the upcoming school year and our children's educational future causes us stress in advance. And like all parents, we would like to put off making a decision for as long as possible. But here too, the more we prepare in advance, the less stressed we will be when the time comes to choose our child's future high school.

Open houses to discover their future school or high school

What better way to get to know a high school and understand what it has to offer than by attending its open house? Pros pectivestudents can get a better idea of what the school is like, and parents can feel more reassured.

Open house events begin at the start of the year in Luxembourg. Luxembourg high schools have already published their open house dates.

Prospective students and parents can now plan their visits. Here are some dates and websites for the high schools that are most popular with the expatriate community.

Why attend high school open houses?

There are many different educational options in Luxembourg, and it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start. During their open days, schools and high schools open their doors to prospective students and their parents. Visitors can then walk around the premises and meet students and teaching staff.

Each high school presents its curriculum and the daily life of its students. We recommend attending several open houses to discover the different atmospheres and specificities of each school. Let yourself be guided by the students, who will be delighted to show you around their school. The transition from elementary school is quite significant.

In addition, these visits help young people to plan ahead and choose a place where they feel comfortable. Your child will be able to make friends, ask all their questions, and feel reassured when the new school year begins.

Discover the school environment

You can get a first impression by visiting the premises and discovering not only the facilities available but also the general atmosphere of the school. This will allow you to assess whether the school is suitable in terms of comfort and safety for your child.

You will also learn about the specific features of the options, foreign languages, and extracurricular activities offered, as well as how school life is organized.

Meet the teaching staff

You will also be able to interact with teachers, ask questions about teaching methods, subjects taught, and academic expectations. Generally, the management teams take this opportunity to explain the school's vision and values.

In addition, clubs and sports, arts, and cultural associations are often presented during Open House events.

Schools take advantage of this opportunity to highlight innovative or specific projects (international exchanges, nature trips, etc.).

In short, Open House events are a valuable opportunity to make an informed choice, taking into account the academic, practical, and human aspects of the institution.

The types of schools to prioritize according to profiles

Luxembourg offers a rich and diverse range of schools. The choice will mainly depend on your child's previous education, your future mobility plans, and the language(s) you wish to prioritize.

As a reminder, here are the education systems available in Luxembourg. You can find more information on our pages dedicated to Education in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg public schools

The public system is multilingual by nature. Primary education begins in Luxembourgish, then German and French gradually take on an important role. This path is particularly suitable for families who plan to settle permanently in Luxembourg and want to integrate strongly into the local community.

English is introduced at the start of secondary school. By this stage, students have developed strong language learning skills, which is one of the advantages of the Luxembourg education system.

Classical and general high schools

From secondary school onwards, career guidance plays a decisive role. Classical high schools are generally more academic and better prepare students for long higher education courses, while general high schools offer more diverse and vocational courses. It is essential to consider your child's strengths, interests, and learning pace.

Public international schools (Europaschoulen)

These public schools offer a variety of language sections (French, English, German, etc.) and award the European Baccalaureate. They are suitable for international families who want a structured academic environment with the possibility of continuity in other European countries.

Private international schools

These schools often offer internationally recognized programs (IB, A-Levels, French program, etc.). This option may be relevant for families who move frequently or who wish to maintain strict continuity with their child's original education system.

Our tips for preparing for your Open House visit

Open House days are a valuable opportunity to go beyond brochures and websites. A well-prepared visit allows you to obtain concrete information and get a better feel for the atmosphere of the school.

  • Clarify your priorities: language of instruction, academic level, size of the school, extracurricular activities, accessibility.
  • Involve your child: their impressions and feelings are crucial, especially in secondary school.
  • Observe the environment: general atmosphere, quality of interaction between students and teachers, layout of the premises.
  • Find out about support services: language assistance, integration of new arrivals, academic support.

Take the time to talk to the teaching staff and, if possible, other parents. These informal conversations often provide valuable insight.

Documents and questions to remember

Useful documents to bring

  • Recent school reports
  • Program followed at the previous school
  • Language certificates (if applicable)
  • Child's identity document

These documents will enable us to provide a more accurate assessment of the child's educational needs and possible placement in a suitable class if more specific discussions are planned with the teaching team. Registration forms will be completed at a later date.

Questions to ask during the Open House

  • What is the required language level for admission?
  • Is there specific support for non-French-speaking or non-German-speaking students?
  • How does secondary school orientation work?
  • What is the pass rate for final exams?
  • What are the possible pathways to other education systems?

Finally, don't hesitate to ask about registration deadlines and specific administrative steps. In Luxembourg, some procedures can be quick, but places in certain schools are limited.

Choosing a school is a life-changing decision for the whole family. Taking the time to explore, compare, and ask the right questions will help you move forward with greater clarity and peace of mind.
