As of 1 January 2019, the largest private and public employers (more than 1,000 employees) classified by field of activity are:

Public employers:

  • Luxembourg State 28,326 employees
  • City of Luxembourg municipal administration 4,061 employees
  • Centres, Homes and Services for People with Disabilities Elderly (SERVIOR), social action, Luxembourg with 2,020 employees

Telecommunications and postal services: 

  • Groupe Post (postal services, telecommunications and banking – Luxembourg) with 4,650 employees and 110 additional employees compared to 2019. The Post Group is the 1st private employer in Luxembourg.

Financial sector and monetary intermediation: 

  • BGL BNP Paribas with 3,830 employees
  • BIL Group with 1,890 employees
  • Spuerkess State Bank and Savings Bank 1,860 employees
  • Société Générale Bank & Trust Luxembourg Group, 1,330 employees
  • RBC Investor Services Bank in Esch-sur-Alzette: 1,160 employees
  • Caceis Group, Luxembourg, headcount 1,080
  • Banque de Luxembourg SA, Luxembourg, headcount 1,000

Services and retail trade: 

  • Cactus Group (services and retail trade – Bertrange) with 4,320 employees and 120 more employees

Cleaning activities: 

  • Dussmann Group gains a place with a workforce of 4,280 compared to 4,120 in the previous year.

Industry sector : 

  • Arcelor Mittal Group (industry sector – Luxembourg) which loses 2 places with a workforce of 3,810 against 4,120
  • Goodyear DunlopTires Operations SA (rubber product industry) employs 3430 people (-20 employees)
  • Ceratizit Luxembourg Sarl 1,420 employees
  • Dupont de Nemours: 1,100 employees

Transport sector : 

  • CFL Group (rail passenger transport – Luxembourg) 4,510 employees with 150 additional employees compared to 2019
  • Luxair SA (Air passenger transport – Munsbach) workforce 2,950
  • Cargolux Airlines international SA: 1,650 employees
  • Emile Weber Voyages , head office in Canach: 1,230 employees

Audit and accounting services: 

  • PriceWaterHouseCoopers Group headcount up to 2,930 employees compared to 2,870 in 2019
  • Deloitte Group (Luxembourg) 2,230 employees
  • KPMG: 1,750 employees
  • Ernst & Young Group: 1,390 employees

Hospital services and home help: 

  • Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (Hospital Service – Luxembourg): 2,490 compared with 2,360 previously
  • Robert Schuman Hospitals Foundation (Hospital Service – Luxembourg) with a staff of 2 310
  • Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch Hospital activities 2,050 employees
  • Northern Hospital in Ettelbruck with 1,050 employees

Retail trade and wholesale : 

  • Cactus Group, retail trade, located in Bertrange, 4,420 employees with 100 more employees compared to 2019
  • Amazon Group, (e-commerce), 2,760 employees compared to 2,250 in 2019, located in Luxembourg
  • La Provençale SARL, wholesale, located in Leudelange with 1.360 employees
  • Auchan Luxembourg SA, retail trade, head office Luxemborug with 1,210 employees

Catering and food products :

  • Sodexo Luxembourg: 2,350 compared to 2,140 the previous year
  • Compass Group Luxembourg, Leudelange, headcount 1,710

Outreach services:

  • Stëftung Hëllef Doheem, home help, Luxembourg, with 1 990 employees
  • Elisabeth (social works) 1,900 employees
