As of 1 January 2019, the largest private and public employers (more than 1,000 employees) classified by field of activity are:

Public employers:

  • Luxembourg State 28,326 employees
  • City of Luxembourg municipal administration 4,061 employees

Telecommunications and postal services: 

  • Post Group (postal services, telecommunications and banking – Luxembourg) employs 4,540 people with 60 additional employees compared to 2018. Post is the first private employer in Luxembourg

Finance sector: 

  • BGL BNP Paribas, which also gained a place compared to 2018 with a workforce of 3,900 compared to 3,660 previously
  • BIL Group with 1,910 employees
  • State Bank and Savings Bank Spuerkess 1,860 employees
  • RBC Investor Services Bank: 1,220 employees

Services and retail trade: 

  • Cactus Group (services and retail trade – Bertrange) with 4,320 employees and 120 more employees

Cleaning activities: 

  • Dussmann Group which gains a place with a workforce of 4,120 compared to 3,880 the previous year
  • Cleaning service 1,390 employees

Industry sector : 

  • Arcelor Mittal Group (industry sector – Luxembourg) which loses 2 places with a workforce of 3,810 against 4,120
  • Goodyear DunlopTires Operations SA (rubber product industry) employs 3430 people (-20 employees)
  • Ceratizit Luxembourg Sarl 1,420 employees
  • Dupont de Nemours: 1,100 employees

Transport sector : 

  • CFL Group (passenger rail transport – Luxembourg) with 4,360 employees and 100 additional employees compared to 2018
  • Luxair SA (Passenger Air Transport – Munsbach) employs 2,950 people compared to 2,820 previously and gains 1 place,
  • Cargolux Airlines International SA: 1,570 employees
  • Emile Weber Voyages: 1,190 employees

Audit and accounting services: 

  • PriceWaterHouseCoopers Group (audit, accounting services – Luxembourg) constant staff at 2,870 but one place less,
  • Deloitte Group (audit of accounting services – Luxembourg) 2,200 employees compared to 2,140 in 2018
  • KPMG: 1,680 employees
  • Ernst & Young Group: 1,300 employees

Hospital services and home help: 

  • Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (Service hospitalier- Luxembourg) staffed 2,360 compared to 2,270 previously
  • Fondation Hôpitaux Robert Schuman (Hospital Service – Luxembourg) with an increase of 30 employees, or 2,270 (+ 1 place in the ranking)
  • Emile Mayrisch Hospital Centre Hospital activities 2,020 employees
  • Stëftung Hëllef Doheem Foundation, home help 1,940 employees

Catering and food products : 

  • Sodexo Luxembourg: 2,140 compared to 2,030 the previous year
  • La Provençale: 1,260 employees

Other services : 

  • Amazon. com (electronic commerce) constant workforce at 2,250
  • Elisabeth (social works) 1,910 employees
  • Servior (public accommodation services for the elderly) 1,880 employees
  • Compass Group Luxembourg (services for companies and individuals) 1,660 employees
